So good, well made and cheap that after I got one I ordered another couple (as I'm always misplacing pencils anyway). Great around the workshop and one point that I don't think anyone else has mentioned, the tip is strong enough to extend so that you can mark through bracket holes - a job that I always find difficult with any other marker.

Nice pencil, IMHO. Pleasantly massive, well lays in hand. Line is also very nice for general marking. As for very fine marking - I use marking knife. Both knife and the pencil have their application in my workshop. In comparison to carpenter wooden pencils and mechanical pencils strong points are evident - this one is more comfortable to use and strogner in regard of lead strength. As for strength when fallen down - any other type of pencil will break easily if hits the floor or even bench. It just means I have to use it carefully. Good chisel can be damaged if dropped also - it does not mean it is weak point of the chisel. Thank you Rockler, nice product.

I finally have a pencil that will work in my shop. I love mechanical pencils, but the break when marking wood. This pencil is much stronger. I also looked on the internet for lead holders which this is, but this is the best price.

I like the dark heavy line it leaves. I normally like a thinner line but the points keep breaking on the pencils. I have normally used a pencil that leaves a dark line but due to the softer lead it breaks if I press hard enough to get the darker line. I like this mechanical pencil because it gives me more lead as I wear down the point without having to sharpening it. I have tried using the carpenters pencil but just don’t like the flat shape, it doesn’t hold comfortable in my hand. Thanks to the designer of this pen, it’s always in my apron ready to make my next mark. The pocket clip adds a nice feature in that it doesn’t fall out when I bend over to pick up something.

When I saw this pencil listing I immediately ordered it. Not for the value of using it in my shop but for everyday life. Most pencils leave to light and thin of a marking for me to see properly. This pencil though leaves a great dark heavy line that my eyes can see well with. Whether sharp to a point or blunt it is great. Thanks Rockler for helping a fellow out with a product to help us in everyday life.

First impressions were great, perhaps a little heavy but all that metal- it should last a lifetime. The next day it fell about 2 feet and the threaded nylon insert attaching the heavy metal tip to the heavy metal barrel sheared off rendering it useless. It didn't even break the point off the lead. I won't be buying this again.

I highly recommend this kind of pencil!
I have been using this kind of pencil since my days in high school drafting class - 45 years ago! We called them "lead holders" back then. I think I have about 10 of them laying around the shop and the home.
You can obtain a Berol lead pointer or other brand that lets you quickly sharpen the lead to various lengths to suit your needs. I sharpen my lead to a shorter point when using it on wood surfaces because it lasts longer. I sharpen to a longer point for drawing on paper.
You can also get lead in different shades and hardnesses. The most commonly available is the "HB". It is a compromise between the very hard, but light "H" leads, and the very soft, but dark "B" leads.
Try it, you'll like it!

Customer Rating:
This pencil is great in concept and poor in execution. I have found the pencil to be extremely fragile-way too fragile for workshop use, in my opinion. The first few times it was dropped resulted in the point breaking, which I will accept as being my fault. Then, it drops out of my shirt pocket when I bent over (2-3 feet) and explodes. I was able to put it back together to where it was still useable. The other day I drop it out of my shirt pocket and it expodes again. This time I can't even get it back together. This particular item, falls way short of my expectation. Bottom line, if you buy this pencil, keep your receipt.

I like this pencil very much. It is hefty, easy to grip and the lead sharpens nicely to a fine point with the included sharpener. I bought two additional pencils as a replacement for the original one that after 3 weeks of use I dropped and broke the plastic screw inside the tip. The last one hasn't broken yet and dropped once already. I really like the feel of the pencil and find it quite useful in layout.

This pencil seems to work well for marking wood, and the HB 2mm lead seems well suited for the task. The lead sharpener worked will, and if you don't sharpen the lead to a really sharp point it will not break as easy and will hold up better. I haven't dropped it yet, and hope not too. I did find lead available at stationeryart.com. Finding a good marking pencil for wood working is is hard to do. 0.5mm drafting pencils leave too light a line and break too easy. They too will not hold up well if dropped. My first impressions from using this pencil are very good, but how well it will hold up, only time will tell. So far I am impressed. Most of the "Rockler" branded products I have purchased have all be well worth the money.

This pencil is a great addition to my workbench. It has a nice hexagon shape to prevent it from rolling off the work bench as well as feels good in your hand. If your tired of your hand cramping up with a thin pencil then get this one, in fact get two like I did and you won't ever want to use anything else.

I have been using the standard carpenter's pencil and #2 round pencils, none of which have the lead centered in them; that means that they don't sharpen properly and the points always break. When they get short, they always seem to disappear when I need them. The Cabinetmaker's pencil set has solved my problem. It stays in my apron pocket, the lead is centered and I can make a very sharp point with the included sharpener. This allows me to make a very fine line that is easily erased or sanded away. I love it.

I purchased this pencil set because I hate standard wordworking pencils. They always crack and the lead is never centered correctly. Well 2 days after I received this pencil something inside went wrong because it wasn't allowing my lead to come out. The more I tried to fix it the more it broke down. It is totally worthless now.

The pencil worked great until 5 months passed and now when I reload the pencil it just breaks the lead, and the mechanism is all stripped where the tip screws onto the loading mechanism. I'm a full-time cabinet maker and the pencil was perfect. Unfortunately I can't even use the pencil anymore because the lead breaks and the tip doesn't stay on. If these problems were not there I would have given this product a Solid 5

I bought one of these pencils as a trial and found it very useful. Having worked with professional drafting pencils in the past, I found the mechanism to advance the lead quite good. I two additional pencils as a replacement for the original one that after a year of use I dropped and broke the plastic screw inside the tip. In a redesign, you might consider replacing the plastic piece with metal for more robustness. All said, this is an excellent tool and I use it everyday.

I really like the mechanical side of the is pencil. A couple pushes of the button on top and your up and running. The only thing I found faulty is that the inner working can get messed up if dropped or if you take it apart and strip the threads when reassembling it if the lead gets caught or something. If you take care of it though it should last a very long time. I did have a problem with one that I bought when I first descovered them but Rockler replaced it free of charge. Rockler is a great place to buy from.

I have found the pencil quite useful in my shop. The size makes it user friendly for larger hands. The soft lead makes the markings distinct but needs replacing often. I liked this pencil set because the pencil had a good solid feel and it came with plenty of lead and a sharpener. Unfortunately shortly after I bought it I happened to drop it on the floor and the metal tip broke off. The majority of the pencil is made of metal. However the part of the pencil that holds the tip on is an internal plastic sleeve. This seems to be the part that snapped.

I liked the pencil but shortly broke the lead in the sharpner and can't clean it out and can't find a replacement for it.
Editor's note: The small piece can be removed by pulling off the top ( it is a friction fit) and turning the pencil upside down to let the piece fall out. We do not carry the 2.0mm lead refills for this product, however it can generally be found at art supply stores as well as on-line art supply sites.

The concept of this pencil is great, but the plastic threads needs to be re-engineered. If the threads were made from brass or some other kind of metal, it would last longer. I was working on my first project and had it in the pencil pocket of my Rockler apron. I must have leaned on it while working and when I pulled it out to use the next time it was broke. If Rockler will replace this one I will remember to remove it from the apron while assembling projects. It would also be a good idea to sell replacement lead and interior mechanisms. I would gladly pay a bit more for a good quality product.

I bought 2 and both were dropped onto a concrete floor. I dropped one from about 2 feet and the other from approx. 3 feet. The pencil stopped functioning after the drop.
The pencil worked fine until I dropped them. And, I would give them a great review if they make them more durable. The design and function were great until they stopped working. The pencils are way to fragile to be used in any type of shop application. As of now though, I would not recommend this product.

I rarely write a negative review of products and even more rarely have anything negative to say about Rockler. However, I have been very disappointed with the Cabinetmaker's Pencil.
I loved the idea when I purchased the first one. It jammed within the first few uses and had to be disassembled to work again. It jammed immediately again, even with a new lead. I retuned it to the store, and they exchanged it for a new one. The new one also broke quickly. I never used more than one or two leads - gave the rest away when the second pencil broke.

I received the cabinetmakers pencil set for Xmas last year and it has never worked. It looks like it could be of good quality but does not advance the lead and makes it worthless. I would not another one of these untill they can guarentee the quality.
Editor's note:
To forward the lead in this pencil as it wears down you push in on the top of the pencil until it clicks. If you do not remove the small end of lead which is left in the pencil before it wears down completely this piece will be trapped and prevent the new lead from grabbing. To install new lead hold the top end of the pencil in while feeding the new piece in. Feed the need piece all but about 1/8 of an inch. Please note that you will need to be holding the top in order for the lead to be feed in properly. Once the new lead is in place and you release the top it will then grab hold. The small excess piece can be remove by pulling off the top ( it is a friction fit) and turning the pencil upside down to let the piece fall out.

I bought the first version of this pencil years ago. I lost it then bought the new version about a year ago. I use it whenever I can find it, someone else is always picking it up to use. I like the size of the new version more than the slim older model. I always wondered why there was a cap on the other end of the eraser until I just now was reading the reviews. So I pulled the cap of, stuck the lead into the little hole, twisted the pencil and sharpened the tip. now I feel stupid having been useing a piece of 600 grit sand paper to sharpen my pencil. Someone should of told me when I bought my pencils. I have never had a problem with either pencil and am ordering another one for my helper right now.

I received this and after opening it, I thought it was going to end all my problems with pencils.
The lead was broken that was inside it and I had a real hard time removing that. Once I finally got it out and replaced with a good lead it lasted about 2 hours and then i noticed the tip was loose as I was making a mark and before I could stop, it popped off and I could not get it screwed back on the plastic tip. Seemed the threads were stripped.
Obviously I am not happy with it. Seemed great but lasted a very short time for 10 bucks.

It is a an excellent pencil. One of the best I have used. Unfortunately the pencil is delicate. The tip broke when it fell a few inches from my hand onto my workbench.

Save your money on this one. Every time I dropped this pencil, the lead broke inside and it would jam causing me to disassemble to get it to work again. My cabinet pencil went into the trash can.

I purchased this set and love the feel of the pencil. However, after a week of use, I dropped it and now it will not work. I tried to take it apart thinking a broken lead was clogging up the works, but it appears that this is a delicate pencil not suited for all around shop use.

When it works it is very good but don't drop it. Had purchased this product a few years ago but it broke. I figured that had improved it over the years so I re-ordered. I dropped the pencil from about 2 feet and the tip broke off rendering it useless. Will not order again.

Here is yet another Rockler product that I would award ten stars but they only allow five. At special, I also bought five, and now I wonder if that will be enough. These are great - make that TRULY OUTSTANDING in comparison to the literally crummie wood pencils being passed off as writing implements, for which workable sharpeners no longer exist unless you happen to find an old handcrank mechanical at a garage sale, maybe. Speaking of sharpening, these super-duty jobs include a nifty sharpener in the eraser module. No instructions, however, so I'll tell you: Pop the blue cap on the eraser handle, then unscrew the pencil's cone and insert the lead into the small center hole and spin the pencil geently & carefully to shave the lead into a very long-tapered point. You may need to advance the lead some, and can simply press the cap in part way to push/slide it back in if necessary until you get the hang of the amount needed - probably the first time you fiddle with it. Simply put, advance the lead minus the screw-on cone until you can shave the lead, do so, and just put the cone back on, it should be just right. It's actually very easy, just unlike any other that at least I've ever seen. But excellent! Heavy duty clunky, but excellent! ...This is the Crocodile Dundee knife of the mechanical pencil world! Saying, "That's not a pencil, Mate, THIS is a pencil!" as you rip away the other guy's framing square with it. ...If it was all black, it would have to be classified as an ASSAULT PENCIL. Just kidding - this pencil is just so impressive it can get you thinking silly. Seriously, BUY THIS PENCIL!!! You'll throw rocks at all the others out there. Actually, like the oldtimers tell you about fish hooks, "Buy three: One to use, one to lose, one to lend." Except you won't dare lend it, ever, unless you can stand guard over it the whole time, and not just because it's expensive. It's like loaning someone your Humvee. Would you? I think not.
Submitted on 12/13/2011 (Update of previous review dated 4/4/2011: Still 5*s, but after some use, and recalling why the infamous carpenter's all-wood pencils are FLAT because even multi-sided ones ROLL! and these roll too! and when they do, onto the floor, point first, the nearly-indestructible pointed cap guiding the lead that is held on by the white plastic lead gripper attached to the brass lead-holding tube, instead breaks off its plastic mounting thread. It is not repairable nor replaceable. This plastic threaded holder is so fragile that it is unlikely that anyone will ever use up the supply of leads that come with each pencil. And it is a ridiculous waste of a ten dollar pencil th have it rendered inoperable by a single fall to the floor.
Submitted on 3/15/2012 Last April I bought 5 of these and by December three had become inoperable due to a fall to the floor that broke off the fragile white plastic thread that holds the lead and the conical metal tip that guides the lead, and wrote then and suggested as a new product as well, that Rockler needs to make available the inner mechanism that breaks so easily due to that ridiculously fragile plastic inner part of what I originally described as a heavy-duty "ASSAULT PENCIL" in my first review. Four months has gone by yet no replacement inserts are listed. Unless your workshop floor has wall-to-wall plush pile carpet, or you intend to wear this pencil on a lanyard around your neck, I would very strongly recommend that no one buy this pencil until replacement inserts are also listed in the catalog. Otherwise you will likely never even use up your very first lead, for the same reason that three out of my five are already useless. These fall and break so easily that I hesitate to use the remaining two at all! $40 pissed away, for what?

Bought 3. 2 for me, 1 as a gift. About as durable as an egg. The pencil looked and felt great. Might be good to use in a "nerf" environment. Don't ever let it touch the ground, the end will snap right off. Really disappointed.

Like a couple of the others one drop during my first project using this pencil is all it took and now its useless. A small piece of plastic is all that holds the metal tip on and if you drop the pencil on the tip its all over but the crying. If re-engineered so that the tip is threaded on to the metal grip I think it would have the durablity that it only looks like it has now.

I love the feel and heft of this pencil, but after a week, the lead stopped advancing. After a month, the end of the barrel fell off while clipped to my shirt still haven't found the missing part... The pencil receives 5 stars for looks and feel, but unfortunately, receives the lowest of marks for quality and durability.

Mine fell off my work station from a height of around 2 feet. The metal tip broke off due to the plastic on the inside breaking. Now I can't use the pencil anymore due to this. It's really too bad too as I really enjoyed the pencil for the short life that I had it less than a month. As it stands, I won't get a new one because things get dropped around the shop, and if this breaks every time it is dropped, it's no longer worth the money.

I second all the comments about how fragile it is. Maybe the redesigned one is better, but both of the ones I bought broke in very short order after being dropped. Anything shopworthy should be able to survive a 3 ft drop to the floor. I don't just mean the lead breaks-the whole mechanism shatters beyond repair. I have an old drafting pencil that uses the same size lead and have found it to be much more durable. It has survived several drops. I would suggest going that route rather than risking $ on this.

This is okay if you are used to using thin mechanical pencils, bad if used to thicker carpenter pencils. The lead holds up alright but the pencil easily lost traction to advance the lead. Don't put in in your pocket, it will come apart. It is for the shop table only, not to be used anywhere else, especially in the field environment. Good idea, not great in application.

They got me during online checkout. It was on sale 50% off, so I tried it. I do like it. It is not plastic at all! ALL METAL no easy breakage! You can sharpen it to a tip that will fit inside an incra square. The eraser has a sharpener built in as well, but it will even give you a finer point than the one in the end of the pencil! Its a good buy. No regrets!

Not a bad pencil, however, it would be a bit more professional looking if Rockler didn't chose to take advantage and splash its name across it in huge letters. Pens I get that are loaded with advertising, I normally get for free.

The inside mechanism is made out of the cheapest, flimsiest plastic. While opening the package, the pencil fell from my hands to the table maybe an 8"-10" fall and the tip broke off. This thing has no place in a cabinetmaker's shop or apron, where it's bound to get dropped, sat on and knocked around.

The thick lead is good for leaving nice lines without breaking the lead all the time. The diameter is bigger than I would like, and it doesn't fit any of my tool belt pencil loops. The biggest downfall is that the metal tip screws to a very weak piece of plastic. One drop that inpacts the tip and the whole thing is useless also is the heavy end...so it's going to drop point first. Better options out there for less money.

The pencil lead itself is the only redeeming quality of the set. The eraser is considerably smaller than the picture suggests and falls out of the plastic blue sleeve easily. The pencil itself has very good heft, but when dropped on my garage floor the plastic that held the metal finger hold to the shaft of the pencil broke and the Pencil is now useless. After only a few weeks of use, an $11.00 pencil should still work and work well.

I bought three - if looks counts, this is a great pencil. If working counts, don't waste your money. I dropped one on my work bench and the second on the floor. Both are now trash. The thin "plastic" threaded tube that holds the "metal" tip on breaks very, very easily. I gave one to my step son that runs a construction company - I embarrassed that I gave it to him.

First of all I've had this pencil for 4+ years and always liked it. However today I dropped it from about 18" off the floor and it literally fell apart. That's the bad news. The good news was that when I called Rocklers to see what they could do they stood behind their product and replaced it free of charge. I find it refreshing to get that kind of service on a product four years old, well out of warranty, and not even a receipt. While the pencil gets 3 stars Rockler gets 5 stars for their treatment of customers. Thanks

Great pencil, loved it since the Sept 2012 purchase. Then it fell, just right, and the cheap plastic threaded inside tip broke. Not happy. Wait I got an idea - super clue the tip on, doesn't need to be removed anyhow. Fixed pencil and a new one on the way. Don't throw away the old one!
