I have found that these mechanisms perform much better than the stainless steel grinders. I prefer the mechanism with the shaft over the one without the shaft. (Installation of the shaftless mechanism requires very precise workmanship and not much is gained). And, as others have noted, the instructions are very poor, but not really required with a little forethought.

The crush grind mechanism is unbelievable! I've spent 55 years searching for the perfect mill and this is it. The grinding is perfect, uniform and smooth. It will grind pepper, salt or herbs. No need to worry about metal corroding if you grind salt since the grinder is made from ceramic. I cannot tell you how wonderful this mechanism is!

The mechanisms don't work. I have tried to adjust them and the pepper dosen't grind maybe only a little. It is more trouble to us it than to use a pepper shaker. It is a waste of time and money. The wood mills look great but it is a wast of time to put the mechanism in.

This is one of the best pepper/salt grinder mechanisms I have ever used. I have built three sets using this mechanism so far and am starting on a fourth. Every one has worked flawlessly.

The mechanism itself seems to be very good, and I like the ceramic for longevity. I found the instructions that came with the mill to be minimal, but adequate to make the mechanism fit and work. I also found that you can do it several other ways, some that work better than others. I suggest boring holes in scrap wood until you get it down and then do your final mill. I am online right now to buy more.

Anyone else assume that a project kit would contain instructions for the project? The product itself is great. I thought, wow, cheap price. Didn't consider I would have to return to the store and spend the same amount to figure out how to use it. To be fair, I suppose it is cheaper for people buying many kits to only pay the costs of the instructions once. It would lower the price for the subsequent ones. I am making one however.

I purchased two of the mechanisms, and I have to echo the comments about the extremely poor quality of the instructions. The photos are extremely poor - you can barely tell what the photo is, much less any detail. Directions, if you can call it that, are pretty none helpful. Based on the copyright date on the bottom of the "instruction" page, these have been out for years. You mean either Rockler or the manufacturer couldn't come up with better instructions over that number of years? I was really disappointed, and if the store had been closer I would have returned it. I like Rockler, have purchased a lot of things there over the years, but this is not up to standards. I'm disappointed.
Editor's note: For better detailed instructions we suggest also purchasing 21971 listed in this offer.

The mechanism is fantastic! Fully adjustable and will grind anything (from the kitchen) you put in it. But I do agree with another reviewer, the poor photocopy of "instructions" that came with it was a waste of paper. Barely readable and unclear. Fortunately, its not rocket science to plan one out from scratch.
