This tapered countersink bits are an excellent addition to any woodshop. I use mine anytime I need to place a screw as it drills a nice tapered hole so the screw doesnt split the wood and it leaves a nice counter sunk hole and you can adjust the stop to make the taper thin or deep. These bits are made of hardened chrome steel and should last me a lifetime! i highly recommend this product.

Like the vast majority of Rockler's products, their R&D team paid attention when this one was designed, and only gave submitted to marketing when it was built right. The solid, router bit-like thick shank and deep flutes on the tapered drill bits place these items far and away in a superior class above the skinny drill bits with a cheap over-sized counter-sink collar bits you can get for around $20 or so.
All the same, I do have one observation:
The adjustable collar should have been more like a split ring collar instead of just a set screw variety. The split ring would be sized just a hair wider than the shank to which it attaches, and it would register tightly against the shank when a set screw is torqued down on it, even lightly.
The advantage of this arrangement would be that it doesn't wiggle around, which the dual set screw version DOES and even just a little bit at high drill speeds mars the work!, so it would register much more FLATLY against the work-piece for a far smoother result.
Being able to adjust it to slide north or south without tilting 'east' or 'west' would be the next improvement guaranteed to minimize frustration with this otherwise fine design.
Keep up the great work, Rocklers! You good folks are rockin' it!!!!!

Had a lot of countersinks over the years, and these are far and away the best I've ever owned. Very adjustable to bit and countersink depth without putting a set screw in the bit's flutes. They leave clean holes and clean countersinks. Only test left is the test of time. If they hold up, they're outstanding.

The countersink I've used only one so far performed well and I'm happy to have purchased it. I have one suggestion that would raise my opinion from Very Good to Excellent.
The adjustable collar should be a split ring collar instead of the set screw type. A split ring is sized only slightly larger than the clamping surface and contracts and grabs the shankwhen a clamping screw is tightened. When in place it won't wobble like the dual set screw version thus smoothly contacts the work piece. It's also easier to adjust because you can adjust it to where it slides in either direction without tilting.

Great set! I've had several $15 (cheap) sets and experienced nothing but frustration because the stop collar would slip, the bit would break, or the cutters tore the wood instead of cutting.
These are easily adjustable to suit many applications, and they provide great results with smooth edges. Worth every penny! I highly recommend them!

The job these countersinks do is no less than perfect. The downfall is you must continually unplug them.

These bits are great but I must admit I have a problem setting the depth collar properly so that it is on perfectly perpendicular to the bit and that it is tight enough that it doesn't tilt with use. I agree that a split collar would be a vast improvement and would be interested in buying if necessary a set of replacement collars if one were marketed. As for the bits becoming plugged, that is an issue but one I've solved simply by using a cheap dental probe I bought at a local hobby shop. The tip is U-shaped and needle sharp and makes removal of debris simple in just a few seconds.

Used These bits to install hard maple kitchen cabinets. They gave the smoothest countersink cut of any countersink bits I have ever used; which are many.
The only problem was the stop tended to slip and you could end up with a deeper countersink than you intended. This was only a problem when used with "Pony Cabinet Claw" clamps where you could not see the progress of the countersink cut and relied on the stop for depth of cut. If countersinking was done without the clamp in place, and the cut was visible, it was a piece of cake to control the depth of cut. Very smooth and easy to control.

Excellent product, leaves a very smooth counterbore for the plugs. Tends to plug a little when you use the stops, but it is still great.

I think I have used nearly every tapered countersink/counterbore product on the market and this is the first that I have used that the counterbore assembly does not slip. I use mine in a ratcheting hand brace for furniture projects where I want a flush fit or to plug the hole above the screw head. These have worked perfectly for me in Oak, Walnut, Cherry, Maple and exotics.
I would highly recommend this product. I may break one at some point but I will never purchase another brand again. Thank you Rockler for a fine and innovative product.

I have used every tapered countersink/counterbore product on the market. From the Fuller #11 set to the 99 cent sets you see on Ebay - nothing works better than these. No question. The design is superior in that nothing slips on these. The countersink /counterbore is the same part the drill connects to - cannot slip. The tapered drill has machined flat spots on it for the set screw to firmly seat - nothing has slipped on these for me yet.
I use mine daily rebuilding a 1926 65' Alaskan Territorial Mail boat here in Juneau. These are the highest quality available. In my comparison the Fuller TPS tapered bits are great - but the counterbore is still prone to slip. We all know the bit never slips, it's the counterbore design of the Rockler's that eliminate any that completely. My only complaint, or suggestion is they are only available #5-#12 - and for planks and other things I use up to size #24 in Fuller TPS. I hope that Rockler steps up, as they have the superior design - and fill that void. Please. With a design like this, there is nothing better on the market. Optional longer tapered bits would be great too.[]

This product was used in the construction of a deck made of IPE (Ironwood), which is a very hard wood. The tapered countersink bits worked extremely well and we are very pleased with the product.

These bits produce very clean holes, but I noticed a design flaw when attempting to countersink 1" long screws. The set screw in the countersink shank will not engage the flat spot on the tapered drill bit and limit the depth of the hole to 1". Perhaps the countersink shank should have an additional threaded hole farther back from the tip of the drill.

I purchased a #6 counter sink for installing screws in cedar. The bit cuts very smooth but seems to be oversized. I have to adjust the collar so I am only using the tip of the bit to make it useful. This required grinding a longer flat spot on the bit to make it fully adjustable. Wish I would have purchased the #5 instead, but too late now.

First let me say that this is a Rockler brand product. It doesn't specify this in the online description. I didn't realize this until I received the item. Nothing against Rockler branded products. I have a number of Rockler branded products that I'm happy with. But I wanted a very high quality set and was willing to pay for it. With all that said I'm happy with the countersinks created with these. Occasionally I have some very minor tearout that I can fix easy enough so I can live with it. I will also mention that the 3 piece Rockler plug cutter set cuts plugs that fit perfectly in these countersink holes. I would recommend this set.

Overall a good feel, but on my #6, and #8 the allen wrench fits too loosely and the collar stripped within a few uses. Very frustrating. Also noticed they tend to burn easier than some other brands.

Rockler products generally are well made but the design of these could be better. I purchased a set of three (#6,#8,#100 and so far have only used the #10 so I cannot yet speak for the others. I found that it quickly turned dark even using proper bit speed for the size and material (oak). Secondly the position of the set screw on the countersink in relation to the flat area on the bit shaft only works for screw lengths of 1 3/4" or so and greater. For a depth of less than that the set screw is down on the bit flutes and cannot be made tight enough to hold the bit tightly. It constantlly was slipping enough to hang up in the material. Granted I was working with 1" oak, a tough material to drill #10 screw holes through. Fortunately I had a set of Fuller bits that had no trouble with the task. If you can afford them get a set of Fuller bits and countersinks. I've used my set many times for years and never been disappointed.

I bought three of these bits for use in installing Ipe decking on a job. The pilot bit on all three lasted for only about 3-4 holes before they broke. At [price]I would think they would hold up better. I did not know that they were made in China.[]I would NOT recommend this product.
