Prized for its fantastic color - irregular streaks of yellow, rose, red and violet on a creamy straw colored background - Tulipwood makes excellent turnings and decorative items. Like other members of the Rosewood family, it is heavy, hard, very fine textured, and takes an excellent polish. Woodworkers often remark on the pleasing floral scent it emits when cut. These turning blanks are available in an assortment of sizes for pens, carvings, bottle stoppers, game pieces, tool handles, table legs, spindles, finials, candlesticks and whatever else your imagination can conjure up!

This turning piece is absolutely beautiful. The wood is dipped completely in wax which serves as an added protection to the wood. The wood will dry out and get minor cracks if left out overnight, so it probably should be used in one session. Overall, a great product and Rockler did a great job of packing materials as always.

I use these blanks for hand carving one off handles for files, knives, and such and also for one off key chains and letter openers, all are given as gifts. All the blanks I have purchased have been very clear, great grain structure and pattern. I will definitely keep a few on hand for future pieces.

One of the three basic oyster knife handle designs has a slight tulip shape. It's corny but I exagerated the basic knife handle shape a little and used the Tulipwood. I guess you would call it a tulip tulip handle, sorry I'm not funny that's why I make knives. As for the wood, it turned very easily with minimal dust. Unlike many other exotic hardwoods the Tulipwood also sands and drills easily. In this way it is superior to some of the more expensive hardwoods and is one of the easiest to work with for my purposes.

This is just one of the items that I made from some of the Brazilian Tulip wood that I bought here. It's a bracelet assist, to help a lady put on a chain bracelet one handed.
It took me a while to turn the captive ring but I made it just to see if I could. By the way, I got $40 at my second show.
I did have a problem with a pen that I made from it for my sister. It developed some cracks in it about a month after I gave it to her. I think it was because I had left it in the lathe over the weekend when it was about half done. When I came back after the weekend it had several strings and drips of resin hanging off of it. After that it didn't quite finish right. I had turned a matching pen from a piece of the same wood that came out just fine. But I did it with out stopping and letting it sit for a couple of days half done.
Overall the Brazilian Tulip wood along with the Zebra wood are my biggest sellers.

Unseable, turned one 3" bottle stop, wood had nothing but cracks. The outside of the wood looks good but as soon as you try to turn it nothing but cracks!

Editor's note: Our customer service at 800-279-4441 will be able to assist you with credit or replacement of defective blank.
