I built this bench for my son-in-law. I used this vise for an end vise and it worked out well. Once I figured out the orientation of the vise, it worked perfectly. My only problem was when I decided to use 5/16 lag bolts to attach the vise to the bench. One of the bolts snapped and I had to figure out a way to get it out of very hard maple. Once I got it out, I redrilled for a 3/4 dowel, filled the rest of the gouges in with epoxy, and redrilled for the bolt. This time I used lots of paste wax when putting in the bolt-lesson learned! After checking out several vises online, I'm glad I bought this one. In fact I'm going to purchase two more for a bench I'm making for myself. I don't really need the larger end vise Rockler sells. The wooden face I made for this vise was 18 1/2" long and works great.

Nice product for the price. Very easy to install and works great. I used 1/4 lag bolts to fasten to the underside of my bench and #14 flat head screws for the front. Just pay close attention to the pictures as well as how it goes back together. I had no problem at all.

Great vise at a great price. Instructions on the box were a little hard to follow, but installation still went ok. Be sure to make note of the orientation of all the parts before disassembing or the quick release will not work properly. A parts diagram would be helpful to remedy this.

I easily installed this vise on my 3 inch thick workbench. I used 5/16" lag screws to mount the vise to the workbench and #14 flat head wood screws to mount the front jaw to the vise. The disassembly and assembly process was easy after incorporating the hints from the other reviewers. The quick release is great and works as expected. Very nice product.

So far no complaints. Fairly easy install but my workbench was being built at the time I installed it so I had easy access.
Very smooth operation. I really like it.

I installed this recently after finally building a proper work bench. So far I love it. No complaints. I installed the vise slightly tilted using washers on rear mounting holes per the instructions that came with my workbench, not the vise instructions, to prevent racking. Even without taking extra care for super precise installation, I am very happy with the performance of this vise so far.

I bought two of these vises to replace the cheaper ones that came with the work bench I bought from Rockler. I used the face boards that came with the original work bench vises. I had to enlarge the holes in the face boards for the vise rods to fit. I did not have a problem removing and reinstalling the plate that holds the vise rods together. The rods fit the holes in the work bench face with no problem. I put it all back together and bolted the two vises in place and they work great so far. I like the way the quick release works. I am very satisfied so far with the way the vises work.

I was a little fearful regarding the reviews that said it was hard to re-assemble the vise! or that there were inadequate instructions. Well......the instructions are on the box! and, the vise went together without any problem. The quick release nut works well. The vise has great clamping power, works very well, and was simple to install. Best of all it was the best dollar value I could find....Anywhere!!

Excellent product at a good value – works great. Installation takes some patience and you will need to disassemble the vise to add your face boards. It is not difficult, just takes some time. Suggest making a template of stiff board [I used the box it came in] to affirm positioning of the vise faces and holes, and keeping the quick-release mechanism [note its positioning] together with the wire tie it ships with during set up and final installation. I positioned the face boards a bit above the bench as instructed. This way, positioning of the face boards during mounting is not so critical. If you seal face boards, it will be disassembled once more. I gave it 4+ stars only because the quick-release mechanism can be slightly sticky at times.

I am just a beginner, but really like this bench vise. It is solidly built and was pretty easy to install after I altered my bench so I had wood where the mounting screws went. One hint I'll pass along is I did not take the vise apart to mount my wooden faces. After looking at the design, I didn't see any reason not to cut slots where the rods and center screw are. In doing this all I had to do was mount the vise, slide the faces in to position and attach, installation was complete. I might go to the trouble of drilling holes etc. next time, but so far I am happy with how everything works. Love the Vise !

This is my first bench vise. It has saved a lot of time compared to using clamps, and with the quick release mechanism I use the vise even for small cuts where I would normally just use my hand to 'clamp'. The quick-release mechanism was a little tricky or sticky at first, but it works great now.

The construction of the vise is top notch. I am nearly finished with my first bench. I took a split design approach (with casters) to save space in my garage. The vise is heavy duty and I'm looking forward to using it to build other projects.

Good product, however very difficult to install on an existing bench with 2x rim. I had to remove existing 2x4 front to drill holes on my drill press. If [with]a template, it would've been much easier. Also the instructions were not clear as I found removing both side rods & inserting thru drilled holes was the only way to line up the face plate. Also the quick release mechanism is very tricky to reinstall when mounting.

Adding your custom face-board requires disassembly of the vise. Getting the quick release re-installed correctly is a bit tricky. I would have saved time if I'd noted how the quick-release was positioned before I took the vise apart. Doh! Once you get it installed, though, it's an excellent vise.

Installation was more difficult than it should have been. There are no instructions other than the brief instructions on the back of the box.
For instance, the mounting plate lacks slots for any fine adjustments once the holes are drilled. Additionally, once taken apart the plate must be oriented properly for the quick release to work.
There are recommended dimensions however I had difficulties situating bench dogs on both the jaw side of the vise as well as the table due to the guides and mounting screws left little room for placement.
Lastly, the quick release sticks somewhat and can be tricky to release. But once together it seems very sturdy and works reasonably well.

Very solidly built product, no complaints about its operation at all. For a amateur/hobby woodworker, its amazing. Clamps hard, releases easy. It loses a star for two reasons:
1: The instructions are oddly worded and difficult to follow.
2: Installation is very tricky. Best bet is to make a hardboard template and confirm it fits the three rods. Then use this to layout and cut your vise faces and holes.
Definitely a good buy, installation not withstanding.

Very well built. Sturdy and solid. Installation was easy with 1/4" lag bolts. The quick release mechanism is interesting. If you install it without a rubber band or cable tie holding the mechanism together underneath you get a sliding vise feature, i.e. no more turning the handle for 30 revolutions to get to max opening, you just pull the vise face out away from the table. I used a rubber band to hold the mechanism together underneath however, i was more comfortable with the traditional handle turning while still retaining the quick release feature. GREAT VISE!!!!!! Enjoy!!!

I bought 2 of these vises based on existing reviews. I was impressed with the expediant delivery and the quality of the vises. They were very easy to install and the half nut assembly worked perfectly the first time. I would recommend this vise to anyone who needs a good product at a reasonable cost.

Purchased two for a newly installed bench top. Obviously the second installation went faster than the first but even the first was not particular daunting. Although I had to scratch my head a bit at the instructions posted to the box, with a little common sense it was installed within ten minutes. Both vises function as advertised and I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Very good product... well built and the quick release works effortlessly. Installed this vise on a new 3" thick workbench with a few deviations from the instructions included on the box. Used 5/16" bolts to attach to the workbench and installed a spacer washer on the rear mounting bolts to prevent racking of the face plate jaw when tightened. What could use improvement? Well for starters, it would be helpful to have a template with dimensions for attaching the handle plate to the front wooden jaw. This is where you will spend most of your time assembling the vise. The instructions were very wordy and it would be better to include these on a paper version along with that template rather than on the cover of the box. When you throw the box away, so goes the instructions. Other than these suggestions, I am very satisfied. PS.... like many other reviewers have suggested, take pictures before you disassemble the product... remember you will be installing this upside down under your workbench top.

Overall, very difficult to install. Pro's Once installed - works ok. Cons Extremely poor instructions. No screws or bolts included. You need to make your own vise face. the quick release is a poor design. Overall, I was disappointed with this product.

I have had issues with this from the 1st time I installed it. It will not line up properly. When the vise closes with a piece at one end, the vise doesn't close evenly -thus only pinch the wood at a single point. I have reinstalled the vise a number of times, each time re-drilling the holes and aligning them with the even/parallel parts of my bench. Today I'm done-I am shopping for a new vise
