Picked one of these up today. I had read all the reviews beforehand and figured it was worth a go for the price. I spent some time polishing the wheel, but nothing extreme. I did find that the brass bushing was about .006 over the wheel giving it too much end play for my taste, so I lapped it down to about .0015 over the wheel and it is smooth as silk now. Sure, I had to do a little work on it out of the package, but far less time spent on it then on a premium chisel out of the box. It marks well, is easy to use and I like the heavy, solid feel of it. I think this tool will be with me for some time.

A very nice tool, priced fairly at the regular price, and a steal at the sale price.

Very good, especially for price on sale.
Rod and marking wheel need lapping and buffing to minimize play. Wheel needs sharpening. Bronze bushing should be cut down to match thickness of marking wheel. All above took about half hour of my time.
Bronze head sits too loose on the rod. It makes setting a liitle bit more complicated than I wish. Marking gauge should be broken down to at least 1/16th.

At the current low price this is a great value. I wasn't sure if I'd like this style of gauge, so I was reluctent to spend a lot of cash on a guess. After playing around with this tool for a few days now, I've come to really like it. Definitely better than a pin guage. The 1/8th graduations don't bother me. Using the existing scale marks as a reference, eyeballing 16ths isn't too hard. You can also convert inches to millimeters and use the metric side if you really wanted to.

This tool is well constructed and should last a lifetime. I bought it because it will transfer a line to my project more consistently than a pin type layout tool will.

Glad that I purchase it. I would also recommend it, marks very well and fine for a more accurate cut. Build to last long and price to me was well worth it.

1) the screw holding the cutting wheel is not flush, 2) it is also loose so the wheel wobbles, the screw bottoms out before it holds the wheel down, 3) the cutter is also pretty dull. I have tried to sharpen, without much successes. With a little work this could be a really good product, as is I wish I had bought something else.

I knew from previous reviews that this marking gauge was calibrated in 1/8" increments, but I'd used one almost identical to it before and really liked it. So I ordered this one anyway. It is just dandy with a good finish on the materials and nicely constructed. I look forward to using it in my shop for a long time.

I consider my 2 stars pretty generous. I bought this on sale to try to learn dovetails. My issue is with the screw that holds on the cutter wheel. I expected that it would sit flush with the outside edge of the cutter. That way it would be easy to align with the thickness of a board or a setup block for specific layouts. Instead it stick out the end making it awkward to set, especially since the rule is layed out in 1/8ths. My other issue is that the cutter has a lot of wobble, regardless how much I've played with the screw attaching it. This tool works, but it is awkward & imprecise, so I feel I should have save my money for something better in this case. A bit of a disapointment since I have been quite happy with all my other purchases & often thought people were over critical in these review.

The only thing I don't like about this gauge is the 1/8" graduation marks, as was noted by other reviewers. Otherwise, it's perfect. Recess in the base is nice, so it protects the cutter for storage. The cutter originally is not very sharp (not sure if that's by design), so it presses into the wood instead of cutting through it. It's OK along the grain, but across the line is not quite clean, especially on softwood. I had to sharpen it a bit on a diamond block, which fixed the problem.
I am very glad I bought it. Didn't have a chance to compare this gauge with a similar one from Veritas, but it still meets my needs for half the price.

The marking gauge is nicely made and finished. the reason for the low rating is that the scale is only divided in 1/8" markings... kind of coarse, by my woodworking standard. I missed that point in the specifications on the web site but feel that 1/16th should be the minimum and 1/32 is better. The metric scale is in mm increments which gives a ~.040" resolution, surely they could have done 1/16th (.062) or 1/32 (.031")

Nicely made, but the wheel as supplied doesn't leave a good and sharp line and the cutter wobbles. Therefore some tuning is needed by sharpening the cutter and reducing the bushing thickness to tighten things up a bit. I did this on a small piece of 400 and 600 grit wet/dry paper using a pencil eraser to press on the cutter and separately the bushing.
All in all another great value.

Like another poster, I need it for dovetails, and the marking is not precise. The blade wobbles, and for some reasons the thumb screw does not stay tight, causing some measuring issues. Wheel having play makes it worthless since I'm doing doves by hand, I need a precise line, not a round-a-bout-kind-of=close-good-enough-for-government-work-line. Waste of cash, save up and step up to a better type or model.

Well constructed unit with solid steel rod and solid brass head. I don't really mind the 1/8 " graduations because I either set it by eye or I measure with an accurate rule. I wasn't so happy with the play of the wheel. I thought it had way too much wobble and I wasn't happy with how dull the edge was, but for a sale price I'm not going to complain. I unscrewed the wheel and honed the wide side on a diamond stone till it was acceptably sharp and then I took the tiny bronze bushing and did the same on a couple wet stones. I simply measured the steel wheel's thickness with a dial caliper and made the bronze bushing exactly 1/1000 of an inch thicker. No more wobble and the wheel is sharp and it rotates freely.

I purchased this tool for a joinery class and the first time I used it, the marking was not precise. The blade wobbles, and the thumb screw does not stay tight, causing some measuring issues. The blade broke in half, came off the end and cut my hand up. This was a couple of years ago. I still have the shaft, it looks great, but that was not the purpose for the purchase.

I was holding-out on this item because of so-so reviews... until this recent Christmas Sale came along with free shipping. I started asking my own questions about it... got good reports no bad. I decided to try it! I love it! Very good materials. Easy to adjust with one hand... The circular cutter could be a little sharper, but it still makes a good mark. I like the little hollowed spot so the marking cutter will recess into it for added protection when not in use. Nice touch. The Imperial 1/8" rule as well as the metric mm rule are easy to read and it feels like they're etched/ground into the shaft, not sure. The shaft is strong & of good weight feeling good in your hand. Very well machined... I love it. I think anyone would like it. I cannot see how it got bad reviews in the past. Rockler, Thank you!

Works very well. I didn't notice the issues other reviewers mentioned about excess play in the wheel - I'm able to make accurate repeatable easily. Yes the scale on the rod is only marked in 1/8" increments, but for any precise marking I need to make I set the distance on the gauge with a ruler anyway.

Rock solid construction - much better than what I assumed from the picture online actually. My problem is the same as the first review - should have at least broken the measurement down to 1/16th's or 1/32nd's if possible. However once it's set to the length you need - you will get exactly the same measurement over and over.
