Methods to consider for installing the threaded insert are:

Use a 5/16” bolt and double nuts on a drill press. Cut the head off a 5/16” bolt and chuck it in a drill press. Then thread on two nuts and the insert so that it is flush with the end of the bolt. Tighten the two nuts on the insert so it won’t spin on the bolt. After the pilot hole is drilled in the stock, clamp your stock with a handscrew or a drill press vise and manually turn the drill press chuck to drive the insert into the stock. DO NOT TURN ON THE DRILL PRESS. The drill press will keep the insert square to the stock as it is threaded in. We also recommend using beeswax, screw lube, or even soap to lubricate the threads on the insert.

This process can also be done on a lathe using a three jaw chuck in the tailstock to manually feed the insert into the stock.

And finally, if you’re using acrylics for your handle, we have found that heating the insert before installing it makes it go in like a hot knife in butter.

This is an excellent pizza cutter. The weight is perfect. I purchased the stainless steel kit and it turned out great. Matched it with a cocobolo handle looks great. Would have gave it an excellent rating, but needs to come with a cover/sleeve for storing when not in use.

Excellent product, super duty pizza cutter. The size and weight make this product second to none. This is NOT your average pizza cutter. I have made 2 and would highly recommend this to anyone. I took a different approach in design, creating a template for handle and used router. I also had issue with splitting the wood due to drilling incorrect pilot hole for insert. I was able to use grinder to grind away some of the threads and used epoxy to secure. If you're reading this, just buy it!

Really heavy duty cutter. Only one problem. The instructions say drill 1/2" hole for threaded insert for hardwood. Used hard maple and it split when I inserted the piece. Remade the handle and drilled with 12.5mm bit and cured problem. Otherwise it's a great kit, instructions need to be amended.

One word describes this "WOW". It is massive and have not cut a pizza with it yet but by the weight and the size of the cutter wheel it should be a treat to use it. Nothing like you would ever see in even the most expensive stores high end kitchen utensil stores. My buddy owns a resturant and has an extensive pizza menu. He doesn't know he is getting one from me for
x-mas but he did say that a good pizza cutter is major requirement especially if you make them for a living. He has not seen this yet and I know he will just love it. OK with the good comes a little bad. My first one I made I used olivewood wouldn't think of using anything but a nice piece of olive wood well the insert was not really easy to install in the new handle and caused it to crack. I bought the correct drill size as instructed in the directions 15/32". I think it should be a bit larger OR better yet have a tap available for this size insert. This is what I ended up having to do in order to minimize the crack in the handle. I was just fortunate enough to have a collection of taps. I just found a size that was close to the insert size. I did butter up the insert with cutting lubricant and soap to assist and that helped a lot. The directions need to be worked on a little with maybe some diagrams as well. I will be making more of these, in fact I already another one and will be heading back to Rockler for some more.
PS: I like the deal with the $1.00 more and you get the ice cream scoop.

A little more expensive than the other pizza cutters on the market, but solid and well designed and well worth the price. Hefty feeling stainless steel cutter head with a sleek design. One of the best things is that it is designed so that the cutter can be removed for washing by simply unscrewing it from the handle. I look forward to making more of these.

After having various untensils fail over the years I can say this is a great product! Very substantial and great looking. I would also like to compliment "Ed" at the St. Louis Rockler store for his demonstration and insights on the process! First Rate Product!

I just finished turning several Pizza cutter handles for friends and relatives for the Holidays. What a easy and great gift to make! When installing the threaded insert in acrylic it's best to heat it up over a gas flame for 30 seconds. It will will then thread in like butter. For wood use either screw lube or soap and that will help ease the installing.

Just turned my first pizza cutter. The stainless kit is certainly high quality and worth every cent. I showed it to the neighbors and everyone wants one for the holidays. I turned an acrylic handle for this one but plan on making the next one out of cocobolo or kingwood. I really like the threaded insert for attaching the head to the handle which means I can remove the handle and throw it in the dishwasher!

This is a great project. Fast and easy. The cutter itself is large and hefty as well just good looking. My Wife makes the world's best Pizza. Needless to say she deserves the best tools to do that. This cutter is great!

I think this project would have been really great, but I dropped the cutting head on the floor and the threaded stud broke off at the base. Not quite sure what to do with it now.

I turned one of these for myself out of olivewood. Everybody thinks it is the gratest pizza cutter. This is the best cutter I ever used. It has some weight to it and fits the hand great. All my life we alway make our own pizza and never had a cutter this good. The handle comes off so you can just throw the cutter in the dishwasher. I am new to wood turning and this was a little harder that pens. But is came out great.

The hardware cutter wheel and housing are extremely well designed and manufactured. In fact, the wheel is sharp enough to cut a lot more than pizza ! Directions are good, as is the loose hardware. I used olivewood for the handle, which I would not recommend. A darker wood like cocobolo, walnut or ebony would look much better against the silver stainless finish. Acrylic handle would be more practical-then the whole thing can go in the dishwashwer. This is a terrific, if a bit pricey kit. I will definitely buy it again to sell, or to give to friends and family.

Not pleased with recent change to a hex drive threaded insert from a slotted insert .  The insert is made of a softer or thinner metal causing it to break often when installed into hardwoods.

Cannot seem to get the Hardware into the Handle with out the Handle Cracking! Have Lubricated the insert...changed to a slightly larger drill...used 3 different woods...cannot seem to get it to work.

I've made two of these, and I love the finished results. My wife really likes the heft and easy cutting of this pizza cutter. However, I have to agree with one of the earliest reviews: The quality of the threaded insert should be better. Once it's in, it's great. But I split the outermost edge on one of mine while hand tightening it into a piece of very old black walnut had been dry for 30+ years. I don't think the problem was that it was out of square, just that the insert cannot handle much torque. A little time with the Dremel cut-off tool tool removed the damaged lip on mine, the grinding wheel cleaned it up, and now it looks and works great . . . but I really think a slightly tougher insert would be a way to make this already-good kit perfect.

This is a beautiful appearing and handling utensil. However, it has a fundamental flaw. The 5/16" stud that is used to attach the handle in inadequate. The stud is non magnetic however, it is not stainless. This stud failed under reasonable loads. I was forced to drill and tap for a new stud using a steel rod.

Editor’s Note: Although this is the only occurrence of this problem that we’ve heard of, there are a few installation tips that we’ve added to the “More Info” tab that will ensure that the threaded insert is perfectly square with the handle. This is critical because it guarantees that the handle and the cutter ferule match perfectly when threaded together and that they can be tighten easily without excessive torque.
