It took some practice to get the hang of using this tool. It is easiest used if the attack angle is 45 degrees or greater. Any less that 45 degrees, the cutter catches causes a gouge. It makes great chips and cuts very fast.

This can be a difficult tool to master and as someone mentioned, it's very sharp and you have to watch your attach angle. If you are hollowing out a bowl it can be hard to see the cutter because of the shavings. With a standard bowl gouge the flute goes up the shaft and makes it easier to know where the tip is. I found that marking the shaft with a felt tip marker gives me an idea of the orientation of the cutter which greatly helps. This is particularly true if you are using the two swan neck versions of this tool where you are back hollowing a bowl. Sometimes I'm in so deep the I have to rely on the mark I put on the handle. I do also own the Easy Wood Tool square shaft carbide cutter and it works very well particularly if you hit some very hard knots in a burl. Have fun it's only wood and you can always recycle it in the fire place, if need be.

This is an excellent carbide tool. Those reviewer which complain about the round shaft have no clue how to use the tool. This tool is used much like a bowl gouge. First ride the bevel with the carbide at about 45 degrees from flat and rotate the handle until you start cutting. NEVER use the tool with the carbide horizontal which is the way it was being used by those that wanted a square bar on the tool For video on its use, look for a name brand carbide tool which has the round bar and view the instructional videos. This in not like the "easy" carbide tools.

My first carbide tip turning tool. Excellent price with the replacement tip. Works great for hollowing...took some experimentation to get the right angle of attack and height adjustment but I'm very happy with this addition to my turning tools.

I've been wanting to purchase a carbide cutter but never got around to it. Last week I spent the money and WOW are these cool. They cut fast, clean and with little effort. It took a few minutes to get the hang of it...it can be very aggressive, so a light touch is in order. I especially HATE sharpening so being able to simply loosen the screw, rotate the cutter, and start turning is a big plus for me. Now I'm saving up for the square cutter!

I love this new addition to my turning tools, I found it great for soft woods. It is very sharp, took a couple practice pieces to get use to, but think it well worth the price. I do believe a flat end would make it more practicle after roughing out the wood. the control was no different for me than my other tools, angle is a little sensitive, but overall GREAT !!

What a great tool for the price. Especially with a extra cutter! A little tricky to get used to but once you get it down it cuts very quickly and smooth.

I found this tool hard to control. The round shaft allows the tool roll. It then digs in to the wood. All cutting must be done within 5 degrees of straight on. The shaft needs a flat surface to ride on the tool rest, this will stablize the roll tendancy. If the cutter had a flat cutting surface the tendancy to dig could be tamed. The cutter could then be touched up with a fine diamond stone. The price is right but I will take it back.

Tried using it several times but couldn't get the hang of it so finally returned it. Great employees at Beaveton store.

I found this a very difficult tool to use. The rake on the carbide is way too steep and does dig in. There is no way you can control the tool to prevent it from digging in. I have stalled the lathe from the tool digging in! The round shaft compounds the problem - you can not do any side cutting with the tool - it will roll over and immediately dig in.
I'll be getting a negative rake carbide insert ansi code # RNMG-43 and giving it a try. If that doen't work, this tool is going back! I'm very disappointed.

I quickly found that the first thing is to wrap the handle with grip tape so it doesn't get away from you upon contact with the work piece.

Secondly you want to have the cutting edge at about center line of the work piece. Too high and it won't cut, too low and you get a new understanding of tool grab.

I use it for roughing bowl blanks and spindle work. No idea about using it for finishing.

I will probably mill a flat on the shank once I determine the best angle.

I tried this tool over and over. I never could get it to work very well. I tried working with my local store and they couldn't get it to work either. When I look at the tool I see many things that look wrong. Like stated in earlier reviews, there needs to be a 45 ground into the shaft. I think the cutter itself is ground wrong as well. There's a little extra lip on the cutting edge that I think messes things up. I was pretty excited with the price, but in the end I was disappointed. I ended up returning the tool.

I have used a lot of carbide tools, but this is the hardest to control even with a lot of practice. Cutter may just be too big for my purposes.

After trying this tool a few times I've found it to be great for roughing out spindles. Not so sure about finishing work. almost seems too sharp and bites in too much. I agree that a flat on the shaft would be very helpful. Also, some instructions, it was by trial and error that I found having the tip even with center height and keeping the handle below the tip were helpful. I'm going to keep mine and keep experimenting with it.
