Calculating the Number and Rating of Lid Supports
Use the following formula to determine the optimal number and rating of lid supports:
Lid width (front to back) x lid weight in pounds / 2 = Inch-lbs. of support required.

Example, using an 18'' wide lid weighing 12 lbs: (18 x 12)/2 = 108. Therefore, either two 45-55 or one 95-125 Inch-lbs support would be an appropriate choice.

What’s in the Box?
One left-side, right-side or center-mount lid support with mounting screws

The recent purchase was the third one. The hinges have been used on toy boxes that I have built for my grand children. These hinges protect little fingers!

My wife has had a Lane hope chest for many years. It's always had just one support. The hinge opposite of the support broke from the lid. I bought 2 of these supports and installed one on each side. The lid weighs about 23 lbs. Ordered the heaviest ones. They work great. I think her hope chest will last her another long while.

These lid supports worked surprisingly well. The were easy to install and the lid stays put at any position. Be sure to order the correct weight size. I calculated per the on-line instructions then bought a left and right support each rated at about 1/2 the total calculated inch/lbs. Perfect! If your back wall is other than 3/4" thick, they WILL NOT WORK,  on a 1" back wall, for example. I checked other brands and they all have the same limitation on back wall thickness. Rockler's more expensive than the others, but I got quick delivery and am totally satisfied with the product. Matching screws are included but are not included with some of the competitor's supports.

If your box has a 3/4" back and the lid sits on top of the back, then this support should work fine if you follow the instructions. My toy box is the bench type where the back is really tall and the lid butts up to the back instead of overlapping it on top. This required lots of trial and error to get the correct placement of the lid support for the lid to close correctly. After drilling several extra holes in my toy box trying to get it to work, I finally gave up and used some scrap wood to duplicate the back, side, and lid assembly of my toy box. This allowed me to mount the lid support as many times as I needed until I found where it worked best, without worrying about drilling extra holes in the actual project. I did ultimately get it in a good enough location where the lid closes pretty good. The lid still does not rest all the way down where it overlaps the front, but I think that might be because the lid is not that heavy and I bought the lid support for the heaviest weight. Now I just have to patch all the extra holes in the toy box. If your lid and back are not exactly like the picture on the package, I strongly recommend that you use some scrap to duplicate your assembly and used that for trial and error. Once you find the right spot, you can transfer those measurements to your actual project to save patching extra holes.

Buyer beware: The warning on the back reads: This product contains one or more chemicals, including lead, that are known in the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling. The label read: Toy Box Lid Support. Is this the kind or material to use on a toy box where children play? I don't expect kids to lick hardwware, but still, it's for a toy box. A reasonable person would expect kids to come in contact with the support if you put if on the toy box. Beware if you do not want your child exposed to this. I would not have bought this if the warning was posted on the product description page.

Editor's note: This warning is due to California's Proposition 65. California's Proposition 65 entitles California consumers to special warnings for products where in the manufacturing of there are chemicals used known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm if those products expose consumers to such chemicals above certain threshold levels. The chemicals used in the production of many metal parts, including all brass, are on California's list, and therefore under any abundance of caution the statement is used on packaging, without evaluation of  reaching  a threshold or  even if any actual presence of chemical. This does not have to be lead, but can be any chemical on California's list. The mere fact of a chemical from the list being used in the manufacturing of a product is enough to result in the statement on the package.

I ordered three of the 95-125 lid supports. The toy chest I made is constructed out of Walnut and walnut-veneered mdf. The lid is 27" deep and weighs about 27 pounds. The three supports hold the lid open once it goes past the halfway point. It's still a little too hard for my 4-year old daughter to open, but it at least stays open and it doesn't come slamming down if it does fall. These worked just as they said they would. I recommend them.

These worked great. I used these on a large wooden lid for a storage container in my mud-room. The lid weighed 28 lbs. so I used 3 of the 95-125 inch lbs supports. The lid now stays open without being held and closes with minimum force. The lid is now safe for children to operate.

Great product, easy to follow instructions, and they support the lid very well. I used two side supports with a piano hing on a pine toybox. The supports hold the lid at about any angle. I could have probably have gotten away with one support but I wanted to make sure the lid was well sported. Now I don't have to worry about the lid falling down and smashing my 1 year old daughter's fingers.

I used the back mount style. Just made sure to measure from the center of the piano hinge pivot point, and got it right the first attempt. Bench lid opens and closes with ease, and stays in any position. These did NOT go into the junk drawer with other ones from the big box stores that did not work or install as expected. Very quick delivery on this item also. Thanks Rockler.

We used these on a cedar chest lid with a solid 3/4" thick top that weighed 25 lbs. The pair of the heaviest ones worked great. It stops the lid at any angle and holds it there like magic. I would not have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Comes with a little diagram on the bag to let you know where to mount the screws. Very easy to install, just took a few minutes. I would definitely use these again for a cedar chest or toy box, where a slamming lid could be a safety concern with youngsters around. Great product, reasonably priced!

The supports hold steady at about any angle from 5-10 degrees to fully open. I used one on each side to prevent cocking of the lid and a piano hinge to make sure as I expect much abuse of this toy box through the years ahead. I highly recommend these supports. Shipping was quick and installation was easy. Thanks for the formula to choose the correct ones. I would purchase them again

I highly recommend these supports. Shipping was quick and installation was easy. Thanks for the formula to choose the correct ones.

These worked great, but you have to get the measurements dead on. My toy box had an overhand on the back and after a few hours of trying to get them to work i ended up cutting out a notch to mount them. After they were on they worked better than I thought they would. Held the top at whatever angle I put it. Great product

Excellent product! Box (made out of red cedar) was 48" long and the lid weighed approxmately 17lbs. We used (1) right side mount, 95-125 Inch lbs. and (1) left side mount, 95-125 Inch lbs., Lid Supports an works flawlessly. The lid stays where you put it. We have a 2-1/2 year old boy that plays inside of anytime he is outside. He keeps his outdoor toys in the box so it gets a lot of use. The lid will stay in place for as long as you leave it there. I never have to worry about it accidentaly falling down. My only complaint is that the supports do not have a few elongated slotted holes, which would allow you to adjust the support up and down for intial intall. You have to be certain that they are perfectly set in place the first time. Otherwise the Lid Supports works flawlessly and I highly recommend to anyone. I will defintely buy again for my next project.

These hinges work as advertised. I had a 33"x33" (3/4 birch ply) top to my built-in bench for toy storage. It had hinges already, but I needed them to stay open like everyone else here. First I thought the pneumatic actuators for storm doors- it works for a little bit but it didn't make the lid stay open. It closed smoothly, though. I still wanted a better solution and luckily, I found these! In the pic, note the defeated actuators hanging down ready for removal and all the holes from the drilling! Grrr! Wish I found this product earlier! Thanks Rockler.

The lid support works great and is easy to install. A suggestion... be sure to accurately weigh the lid! I guessed and was a little under, resulting in the support holding the lid up, but falling when about halfway closed. I used along with 4 flange hinges and am very happy, as is my grandson.

This is an excellent support. It was easy to install using the included screws and instructions. I bought two supports (a left and a right) but I only needed one to support the lid. The hinge prevents the lid from closing over a full range of motion. The lid stays in place where ever you let go - fully open, fully closed, or anywhere in between. Got these supports to keep some heavy bench seat supports from smashing the kids fingers in the play room. They work wonderfully and there'll be no more fingers caught when the little ones go to get their toys. The supports make the lids to the bench seats lighter, enabling my 2YO to open the lid when she previously wasn't able to. Also, the lids stay in the position they're in when released. Installation was a cinch - I originally installed using the measurements on the instructions printed on the bag, but that restricted the amount I could open the lid. So I adjusted to my needs, and they work just fine. Excellent product!

I made this oak toy box for my granddaughter. I wanted to be sure her little fingers would not get smashed by the lid - so I went to Rockler.com for help.
I actually purchased both the left and right lid support, however due to the raised panels, I could not mount them on the sides of the box as instructed.
I actually used the left support and mounted it on the back as pictured. I works GREAT! The lid stays wherever you put it. No chance of little fingers getting hurt.
I will not hesitate using these in the future for any additional toy boxes or chests I make! Thank you Rockler!

I've been building these treasure chest toy boxes for my nieces / nephews and friend's children. As you can see, the tops of these are very heavy and I spent a lot of time figuring out just what I would use to hold them up. Using left and right mounted supports the lid is now safe for the kids, and holds open very well. I had found some of these at a local hardware store, but the difference in quality between the ones from Rockler and the ones that are locally available is huge. I'd rather pay the shipping. The ones from Rockler feel much tighter and hold much better, especially on that heavy lid.

I used the 45-55 in. lb. lid support on a toy box. The lid was ply with 2" poplar edging (30" X 18"). The lid support worked very well and I will not hesitate to use that type lid support again in the future.

Used the hinges on a toy box I made for my two grandchildren and the hinges worked great! Just as I thought, the second thing the kids did after they saw the toy box was to crawl into it.

I used these lid supports on toy boxes for my young grandchildren. The lids are held in any position you tilt them from fully closed to fully open. It's a much required safety feature for young children as far as I'm concerned.

These are excellent lid supports although I prefer to use a L and R as opposed to only one and only w/ a piano hinge. These supports create an enormous amount of stress on the hinge and I've seen smaller 4" hinges have their screws ripped out of the back board b/c of these supports. Excellent price, excellent product.

Due to the size and weight of the 50x24 cover I used two back mount 95 -125 lb supports. I was surprised how well they work - up and down. No pinched fingers here.
I also utilized a single wrap around slotted piano hinge to complete smooth operation. This will be a wood storage box in the winter, so I used the 5" swivel casters to allow me to roll it when there is some snow on the deck.
The box was built with left over eastern white pine shiplap boards from a barn completed last year. The box was stained with Sikkens teak SRD deck coating.
Thanks to Rockler and their products I have used in several projects over the past years.

The combination of the antique brass piano hinge and the toy box lid supports combined to make an easy and smooth opening lid on this solid oak custom toy box. With a folding chalk board easel, and inlaid toy block letter this bench style toy box will be a family heirloom for years. I was very happy with the General Finishes line of stain and Arm-R-Seal topcoat.

I built the toy box for my granddaughter. The box was made from leftover bead board from a remodeling project. The lid was made safe with the use of the safety hinge. Works great and the dimensions on the package allowed me to mount it perfectly the first time.

I built a pirate toy chest for my nephew's baby. The chest was made from 3/4' red oak. The lid is very heavy and I wanted to make certain that it would not come cracking down, The safety hinge works great and the dimensions on the package allowed me to mount it perfectly the first time.

I used both a left and right hand hinge on a toy box for our grandchildren. I needed something that would not fall down on their hands as they were retrieving toys. The hinges did the trick.

There are three hinged lids covering some storage compartments in my truck camper that just wouldn't stay up by themselves. I installed one toy box lid support on each lid. The lids are very light weight and so I used the lightest model lid support. I did have to use shorter mounting screws than what was supplied because the lids were only 1/2" thick. These lid supports have really worked great and were easy to install!

I built a toy chest for the baby boy we are expecting in April and couldnt find anything at the popular home maintanance stores. I put 2 lids on it and each needed a support. However, since the back board was not 3/4 inch, but thicker, I had to do some trial-and-error placements and it works well, but if I only pick it up about 5 or 6 inches, it does slam down but after that it will stay up. Considering such a small drop, it should be safe enough for a child.

Editor's note: motion of lid as mentioned will not occur when supports are selected to match the weight rating of the lid as per the formula in this offer.

Used the center support on a toybox I made for my 2 yr old nephew. I have absolutely no worries about the solid maple top slamming down on him. These supports can take a beating and still continue to work great.
I have used these hinges in the past and I will continue to use them. I do not have to worry about these supports failing, they are definately built to last. Excellent product and fairly priced.

Just fitted a pair of these to a blanket chest lid I've made for a friend and they work superbly, precisely as described! I did have to fit ¾" long screws to the hinges, otherwise there's a tendency for the hinges to lift (this was with softwood though). Hinges also need to be of pretty good quality - I tried some thin steel ones and they didn't like it.

Don't make the same mistake I did, if you're fitting a pair of these stays - buy TWO stays that'll give you the inch-lbs range; don't just buy a pair of the strongest ones!! Great product! I only wish we had something like this in the UK.

These lid supports work very well and although listed for toy boxes, I have used them on hope chests and other "finer" applications where a heavy lid slamming down could cause harm. The antique bronze/brass finish blends in well with oiled cherry. I prefer these over some of the friction disc units because there is nothing to adjust and no plastic parts.

I know the support is "upside down" but it is the only way I could attach it to a box lid without adding built up pieces for the support. I have the both sides of the lid supported with a lid support to discourage twisting the box lid. I was worried at first that it would open backwards (?) due to the upside down support, but no worries, the lid opens and closes great. I did slightly miss calculate either the hing relief or the placement of the toy box lid supports because the lid closes to the point such that there is a 2mm gap all the way around. End point: These supports work great for box lids upside down.

I have ordered and received a number of your products that are not available in this area. The items have been reasonably priced and perform far above my expectations. In building childrens toys, furniture and hosehold needs your products have not only provided satifactory results but also ensured the extra safety factor I need. Delivery via postal or ground transportation is quite fast and has not been a factor in completing my projects. Bottom line, I am very pleased with your products, service and pass catalogs on friends/neighbors as often as possible. Our area is growing by leaps and bounds but selection of special tools and hardware in extremely limited. Your catalog is the first place I look for my project needs.

These supports work well however I have found that they wear out after a few years under veary heavy use. They then bind and something, like the hinges or the screws, fail.

I used two 45-55 in/lb hinges on a toy box lid (20" by 38", 3/4" oak ply with ash 2" edges). Wished I would have used a higher rated hinge even though my lid was within the range of these hinges. Lid did not close quite like I hoped for the last 6 inches.

Followed instructions on back of bag for a center mounted Toy Box Lid Support - 1 1/8" down from pivot and 3" up from pivot per diagram. Lid would not close all the way - tried using washers and bushings - tried using 3/8" spacer - nothing worked. I will now fill all of my holes and find a different brand of support.

Editor's note: You'll also want to be sure Dan that you are only 3/4" in from the pivot of the lid's hinge. This means on a back mount support you need a 3/4" thick back wall. The symptoms you describe here occur when the back wall is too thick or some type of liner is being used that is making the thickness greater than 3/4".

I didn't think I'd actually find one of these until another audio enthusiast recommended your site.
I totally refurbished my 1965 FISHER Futura VI Console Stereo inside and out. The original Support was shot! Bought the 95-125 Center mount. Comparing the original with the new, I couldn't see any difference in dimensions, finish, or overall design. The mounting brackets were even the same size as were the hole offsets. Holds that top up like it was new. The wife wants one for her FISHER 1965 Custom Electra VIII now. If "MOM" ain't happy, nobody's happy!

This is the third blanket chest/toy box I have made. The lids have been solid oak or cherry. Lid Supports have worked very well. I desinged the box to have and 1-3/8" trim piece with 3/4 dado to cover the plywood edge and mount the piano hinge, hidden- thus I had to figure different mounting dimensions. This is a better quality product than similar item in big box store.

Can someone explain what I am doing wrong. I tried to use these lid supports but the lid won't close all the way. I have tried everything but when shut the lid still stays open about an inch.

Editor's note:  This symptom can occur when the back wall of the box is thicker than 3/4".  Reducing the thickness where the hinge are mounted on the back wall to 3/4" thickness will correct the issue.

These supports look good, and I am sure they would work great if you have the 3/4" back wall to mount to. If your back wall is more than the 3/4 your lid won't close at all. That's what happened to me, and now I have 2 supports I can't use and a box with a dozen holes from trying everything possible to make them work. Going to look elsewhere.
