This fabulous finish was recently rated by Fine Woodworking magazine as "Best Brush-on" in a competition of national brands. It is our standard "work horse" top coat and can be used in furniture and woodwork. Formulated to be durable and consumer friendly, it flows and levels easily and has great adhesion characteristics. It has strong sag resistance for vertical surfaces and its higher polyurethane content provides greater durability than other polyurethane/acrylic blends. Once you use PolyAcrylic Blend you will say to yourself, "Fine Woodworking was right on!"
 EF Extender(#80728) is used to open or increase the dry time of water base stains and finishes. Use EF Extender when conditions are extremely hot or dry. Also when staining a large project EF Extender helps provide more working time.
Note: Simply mix 10% to 15% (3-5 fl. oz. per qt.) of EF Extender with any water base stain or finish and mix well.

Time will tell about durability, but this finish is a pleasure to work with. It brushes out well on large surfaces with a high quality soft polyester brush. It levels very well with no streaking, and it's a dream to sand between coats - dusts off like lacquer. The finish has no rubbery feel like the earlier water base clear finishes. First coat raises the grain a bit, but the first sanding takes care of that and subsequent coats result in a clear, hard finish with a great feel. Water based finish has come a long way.

The product behaves as advertised. While it brushes out nicely, it levels better when applied with a foam brush or a high quality paint pad. Use firm pressure with the paint pad after you have squeezed most of the finish from the pad on the edge of the paint tray. Use as large a pad as you can to maintain a wet edge while coating. If coating a large project, be careful not to transfer partially dried finish from the paint tray to the project. As with most materials, once you learn the parameters, your technique improves and your result is a beautiful finish. Also, as with any water-based finish, excessive build-up in corners will show up as cloudy on dark woods, so be sure to brush out your corners.

I'm a typical DIY'er that loves to work with wood. This Polyacrylic Blend Top Coat is one of the easiest most fool proof finishes I've ever used. It builds very quickly with ultra fast dry times making multiple coats possible in the same day. It self levels and dries to a very hard crystal clear finish. I love how well it flows out over a couple of seal coats of de-waxed shellac. With the shellac making the grain "pop" after staining, the EF Polyacrylic Blend Top Coat then adds a nice deep luster without the artificial plastic coating look of a typical polyurethane. Plus, with the very quick dry times, you don't have the worries of dust particles getting stuck in the finish like a slow drying oil based finish. In short, the stuff is nearly idiot proof.

Getting a REALLY nice finish has been something I've always struggled with - that is until I tried this product. I don't know if it's possible to screw up your work using this. I've never used anything that goes on so easy and so smoothly. I call it my "magic finish" because it's that good. It looks horrible when you first put it on, but 15 minutes later it's beautiful. After staining, I sprayed on a few light coats of dewaxed shellac, lightly sanded and then applied the PolyAcrylic. I couldn't believe how easily it flowed on and leveled out. Even if your application isn't uniform it seems to dry uniform. And cleaning the foam brush was a breeze too. Just a few seconds under running water and it was ready for the next application. I doubt I'll ever use anything else.

I have used this PolyAcrylic Top Coat on several furniture pieces and it is without equal in my experience. I sprayed 3 coats satin over a General Finishes black EF Wood Stain on an AV cabinet I built. The finish is smooth and very hard. I previously sprayed 4 coats on a refinished table top. It shows no wear after daily use. Clean up is a breeze. Highly recommend.

After using Miniwax Water Based Pre-Conditioner on some new ladderback chairs, I did a light sanding and then painted them with milk paint. Because the chairs get more use and abuse, I felt it was necessary to protect the finish. I had not used a polyacrylic topcoat product before but after reading the customer reviews, I felt that it was the best choice. I used a satin finish, applied it with a foam brush, and it performed beautifully. It gave a natural sheen to the chairs without looking like I had applied a protective topcoat, and to me, that is the most important aspect of using a product of this type.

Simply the best finish I have ever found. Foam brush application with light sanding between coats, I normally use a minimum of three coats, leaves a finish as smmoth as glass. I use automotive grade sand paper between coats, 400 grit on the first sanding and either 600 or 800 for later sanding. Used this product to refinish a 100 year old cedar chest and the results were beyond belief.

I've been using this product for awhile now, and am consistently happy with the results both from brushing and from spraying with my HVLP rig. It dries twice as fast as any oil-based varnish, has little smell, sands easily, and cleans up with warm water. My favorite part is that I don't need to scuff sand between coats, since each fresh coat etches the previous one.

I've included a photo of myself with a recent project; a "running" hall table in curly maple. I dyed the wood to a brownish red with TransTint dye, sealed it with a single coat of Polyacrylic, then glazed it with General Finishes' Brown Mahogany Gel Stain to bring out the texture of the wood and deepen the rich brown tones. Three more coats of Polyacrylic Gloss and I was done! The longest part of the process was the two-day wait for the oil-based Gel Stain to dry rock-hard before topcoating it with the waterborne Polyacrylic. I've never had such an easy time replicating the look of a good "antique" finish before!

We recently refinished our kitchen cabinets with a high quality milk paint,(not from Rockler) that although it came out nice, we felt it wasn't going to be a durable enough finish for the long run in a kitchen. Cleaning and wipe-downs seemed to take off paint and the surfaces didn't have a nice smooth feel like a factory finished cabinet.
Based on the reviews and advice from other users here, I selected this product as a clear top coat. Expensive? Perhaps, but I wanted an excellent product both in ease of application and durability. I was also very concerned about using anything that might tint or distort the color of the milk paint so a crystal clear finish was a must. This product delivered! Yes, it goes on a little milky but dries crystal clear and hard.
We applied three coats to surfaces that would be handled regularly like the doors and face frames and two coats to the cabinet boxes. The cabinets now have the look and feel of a factory finish. Nice!
Drying time between coats was quick as one would expect with a water based finish but this let us get the job done and get the kitchen back in use in a weekend!
We used foam brushes for application with no complaints. (Although we were very upset with the 'premium' grade foam brushes we got from that Large Overstuffed Wonderfully Excessive Store which seemed to start breaking down and leaving black bits and hairs behind! Don't waste your $$!)
As a die-hard varnish, shellac and lacquer user who shunned polyurethanes, I kept saying how 20 years ago, if someone told me I'd be applying a WATER-based clear top coat while using a 98 cent foam brush and loving the results, I'd say they were nuts! But, I did and I'm very happy! I will definitely recommend this to anyone.

I used this PolyAcrylic finish on Cherry, coated with linseed oil. This finish is beautiful, much like the look of rubbed on shellac. It left a warm tone, unlike the cold bluish look of cheaper water based finishes. It brushes beautifully, drying level.
