These worked well, but putting a mortise in the endgrain of the bed rail was not easy. I ended up building a jig and using a 5/8 straight bit to make the mortise. I then used a 1/4" forstner bit in a drill to cut the reliefs for the hooks. The suggestion made in other reviews to recess the plates slightly is a good one.

First - A shout out to Rockler's CS. I ordered the wrong size. Called them up and had no problems with returns. I reordered the right size and was able to keep working on the bed. These pieces are SOLID and give me confidence that my joints M/T will probably fail before these do.

These are required hardware for the New Yankee plan for trundle beds. I am building two for my kids. These make a strong connection between the side rails and the foot/head boards.

These made for a knock down connection that was rock solid for the arts & crafts bed I made for my daughter. I mortised them in just slightly below the surface 1/64" on both the post and bed rails and this created an extra friction fit between the wood parts that made an exceptionally solid connection. This worked out well on the 1-1/2 x 9" rails that I made because of the extra wood around each of the rail brackets. I used #8 x 3" particel board screws with a type 17 point self drilling to mount the hardware for maximum holding power. I tried a #10 screw but the head was too large and interfered with the fit. I just ordered 2 more sets for future projects.

It took my wife and I a good little while to build this sleigh bed. Installing these fasteners was definitely the easiest, and quickest step. They feel nice and heavy, and we're sure they'll last as long as the bed will. The bed is made of cherry, with pine slats. We finished it with medium brown Transtints, and Zinsser amber shellac. The fasteners don't look bad either.

Excellent product. When installed properly, makes for a very solid bed frame. Some of the reviews mention two problems: 1 the middle screw for the female piece interferes with the hook on the male piece. 2 The height of the male and female pieces don't match up. These problems are both caused by installing the female piece upside down. Another potential problem is that the screws for the male piece screw into end grain on the bed rail and might work loose over time. This can be resolved by drilling a 1/2" diameter hole from the underside of each bed frame end and inserting a 1/2" diameter wood dowel. The hole and dowel should be positioned about 1" from the end of the bed frame so that the screws will screw into the dowel which will solve the end grain problem.

I have been the woodshop teacher at Rhea County High School for the past ten years. We have built over 30 pine sleigh beds ranging from twin to king size and have used these steel bed rail fasteners everytime. They are easy to use and very durable making a very sturdy bed. I will continue to use these for future projects.

Recently built matched pair of twin beds from locally harvested and prepared white ash. 3"x3" posts and 6/4" stretchers with mortise and tennon jointry. Slats are mortised into stretchers. The hardware was just the ticket for a knockdown feature. The rails were also 6/4.

My last project was a three mattress student loft bunk bed, these bed rail fasteners held perfectly. I used 5/4 oak for the side rails, which made it very strong. They showed up at my shop very fast. I will use these bed rail fasteners for all of the beds I build in the future.

We recently purchased a antique oak bed. It had a beautiful headboard and foot board but was missing its side rails. My husband used the bed rail fasteners on an pine boards to make new side rails. With the help of the 6 inch bed rail fasteners we have a lovely antique double bed, that is also very sturdy. He found the fasteners easy to work with. The other good part is that the fasteners arrived in only two days from placing the order. You folks at Rockler rock.

I used two sets to hold the extra wide side rails for a Cal. King bed frame. This is the second bed frame I have used this product on. The first was on a queen bed more than ten years ago and the frame is still very solid. I would use them again, very good product.
Note - the center screw hole on the female portion of the fastener can not be used due to interference with the hooks on the male part. Happy woodworking!

This was the first time I used this product on a bed that I built. I had built a bed in the past and used a different method to attach the side rails. The bed rail fasteners made the assembly way faster and easier than ever and still had a solid fit. The set I got required some slight filing to achieve an exact fit, but it was very simple and done with a regular hand file.

I first used this item on bunk-beds I built for two of my daughters. They were children and like most kids were rambunctious kids. they liked to play on the beds, especially on the top. When they got to be too big for the beds, they were as solid and sturdy as the day they were built. I had built them from oak, but I feel the sturdiness was due also to the fact these rail bed fasteners were so stable and kept the beds ridgid.

Heavy duty hardware that makes bed joinery easy and secure. Several pieces were either slightly crooked or bowed but not so much as to affect the mortise or not pull flat once screwed down. In general they tended to fit rather tightly. Some required excess force to drive them home, so light filing of the hooks was necessary. Otherwise, they still made assembly and disassembly a snap.

I used these fasteners on a classic cherry bed I built in 2005. They failed this month (12/09), probably due to my (now) 7 year old jumping off the footboard onto the mattress. The tabs on the male fastener pulled through the plate, dropping the bed rails to the floor. Two of the four tabs in the foot end of the bed pulled through outright, the others were bent and ready to fail in the same manner.
I can't stop a kid from jumping on the bed, and I'll replace these fasteners with same so I don't have to rework the bed - but fingers are crossed. I cannot recommend these for a bunk bed!

Quite strong, trustworthy for joinery. Not very fine in the metal work. Needed some filing to fit properly and the top of the two tangs is very close to interfering with the center screw. I find these still as the most sure way to join bedrails to head and footboards. I would use them again.

A very well made product. One fault I have found is that over time the hook becomes loose which allows the whole bed to shake. If the hook is welded to the plate before use it remains tight.

Once I figured out how to mortise the ends of the rails the hardware was easily enough installed. I installed them in a bed I use in my tent for camping. For a bed that will be assembled and left in place they are fine, but a bed that is assembled and disassembled often they are not so good. The tenons tend to come out of the mortises when moving the bed. I drilled the posts just above the rails and inserted short dowels to lock in the rails. Now I can assemble the bed where there is plenty of room, then move it into the corner without the whole thing coming apart.

I think these are fantastic bits of hardware. They are nice and tight and all very consistent in their manufacture. I used these to repair a bed that had very poor factory installed hardware. I just cleaned out the space to mount them using a router. I did have to file some of the hooks down, but I wanted the joints as tight as possible, so I didn't view it as a problem. The frame is very tight, and no longer creaks if you roll over. Great service also.

I've made several (like almost 30) cradles over the years, and this was my first go at one that could be taken apart for storage. This hardware is by far more than I need, but rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Mortising for the rail fasteners was a breeze, a little hand chisel for the "hook" end and it all went together perfectly.

I had an incredible hand-carved bedroom set custom made for my house in Baja. The only problem was the side rails: they weren't included and the headboard and footboard were barely wide enough for the matress. This meant I could only use 3/4 inch material for the rails.

I purchased the 6 x 5/8 rail fastener set and it was perfect for the project. I routered both the end of the rail and the post for a perfect hidden connection. The item is very heavy duty and is made to create a very tight connection - no movement or noise at all. If you have to attach to end grain like I did, I suggest using extra long screws.

This is a solid oak raised panel king size bed I made for my wife and me.I used item #28589 4"x5/8" wrought steel bed rail fasteners. After printing off the spec. sheet and looking it over, I was able to install these fasteners without a hitch. In fact the bed is so sound that there is no play at all in it. I am so pleased with the fasteners that I will use them again.

You may be interested to know that the 4" fasteners will not fully seat together in their current configuration if all three screws are installed. The center screw interferes with the upper hook on the hook portion and prohibits the hook side from fully seating. Filing a little bit more than 1/8" from the point on the upper hook will allow proper seating. Of course, one can simply eliminate the center screw on the slotted side, but I don't recommend that.

Having just received, (but not yet installed so maybe after installation I might change my mind) for ease of installation I would recommend that both pieces of the hardware be designed to be installed at the same height rather than different heights. That is to say that when the pieces are in place on the bed post and rail, and the hooks latched, that both sides of the hook set are very close to the same height on both the post and the rail. As presently designed, one must calculate how much higher to afix the plug (the piece with the hook) than the recepticle (the piece with the holes to receive the hook) in order for the pieces to mate rendering your rail postioned at the desired position on the post.

Used these to assemble two Shaker style bed frames. I had only one difficulty with the installation. I found that the there was interference between the lower "hook" and the center screw on the mating half. To solve the problem I filed the end of the "hook" down a bit and all worked fine.

Fairly easy to install. One note of warning on the female piece. Do not put the middle screw in on the 4" size! I found that the middle screw was interfering with the hooks and I could not seat the hooks properly. Two screws hold the female place with more than enough strength.

Product works fine but you'll have to let it in to the bed rail about 1/16" below flush so that the bed rail binds against the bedpost. We'll see how it works over time.

I built a bed last year with a set of these steel bed rail fasteners that I purchased about 10 years ago. Had been saving them for the project I finally got around to. That set was the wrought rron color and very good quality. I recently purchased this set thinking they are the same finish "wrought", but they now come with a shiny brass[yellow zinc]colored finish. They are exactly the same quality manufacture as the old ones, but I just don't care for the anodized shiny finish. It makes them look cheap and not older and original. I guess it really doesn't matter, since you won't see them anyway. I usually build older style antique type beds and would prefer the older wrought steel finish. Very functional otherwise.

This is the first time I made a queen-size bed. In the past, I’ve made twin-size beds and daybeds with trundle. In each of those cases, I’ve used the 4” bed rail fasteners. They worked great. This time, because of the bed size, I went with the 6” version. I ran into a problem I didn’t encounter with the 4” version – namely, the male and female plates wouldn’t line up flush when assembled. The male plate was an 1/8”+ higher. The net result caused the sideboards to be higher then the bottom rails on the head and foot boards. I checked all four hinges – they all did the same thing. Also, the side boards did not lock the way the side boards did on the twin and daybed versions.

The middle screw must be left out on the female fitting, as it will interfere with the male hook. Additional tenons must also be cut for back side of hook that is stamped in - not welded. [] Rockler has always been my first choice in hardware. This was the exception.

I used the 4" ones on a queen. Must own a Dremel or equivalent to get them to fit properly. Otherwise the hooks will not seat all the way and the joint will be loose. Plan on taking a 1/4" or more off the ends of the hooks and opening up the gap 1/32" on the hooks. Great joint if you do that. If you don't want to do that, get something else.

Very sturdy and easy to use. I don't see these failing anytime in the future. My only gripe would be that they could be a little longer to accomodate the center screw hole better for when the tangs hook in the female piece, but no big deal. These also do not come with screws.

The 6-inch fasteners are great, no complaints at all. The 4-inch fasteners suffer from a horrible design flaw. The top hook is impeded by the center screw on the socket side. You can see this in the attached photo. If that center screw had been driven straight the fasteners wouldn't be able to close completely.

Editor's note: The manufacturer will be eliminating the middle hole in the 28589 in further productions of this item. The manufacturer recommended solution for use of any remaining inventory of brackets with a center hole is to omit the center screw during installation.

Personally I have to disagree with most of the favorable reviews of this product. At least from my experience the quality is poor. While they appear to be strong the design is bad. The center screw cannot even be used as the hook will hit it. Also 3 of the 4 pair will not go together out of the package. Rework with a file is not what I had in mind when I bought these.

I would have rated these as excellent, except that they are shipped without screws, or even any suggestion of what size/length screws to use. Nowhere in the product description was the lack of fasteners alluded to. That said, the bed rail brackets are pretty cool, and function exactly as intended.

"Every time I have been in a Rockler store around the country I have left feeling that I received wonderful service and most always had exactly what I needed in stock at a fair to great price. the only complaint, if it can be called that, is that I have to drive over 45 minutes to reach the nearest Rockler store. My wife probably appreciates that distance, as I am certain that if one was as close as I wished it to be, we would have very little left in our checkbook!"
