I purhased this router, one for the price, and second for the 50 dollar gift sertificate. Once I received the router it was more than that. I put it in my small router table and it works great. I would recommend it to anyone and the price is right.

I bought my 690 in 1986 and it still runs perfectly today and I do not ever baby it. I have had to replace the cord a few years ago due to the power cord rotting! I also had to replace the base locking key and bolt, but that was peanuts! I would buy another if and when I ever have to!

I've used my 690 for close to 2 years now without a problem. It has power to spare and is rock solid. It has outperformed every other tool in my shop. In many cases I've found a way to use a router in lieu my other tools. I have great confidence it will last for many years. My dad's 690 is over 10 years old and still running strong (I've put a few hours on that one too!)
I use it exclusively for hand work using the fixed and plunge bases provided, opting instead to use the bigger 7518 in my router table.
I highly recommend this router to anyone. It is simple to use and inexpensive enough for a beginner, but sturdy and precise enough for a serious woodworker.

Porter Cable is Porter Cable, it's a quality tool company. The 690's power is great, height adjustments are accurate, and the bushings are easily replaceable. Very long lasting tool.

My son and I ordered a number of tools and supplies so that I could build him and his wife a new set of kitchen cabinets. I used the P/C router and Rockler combo dovetail jig and dust collector to make all 21 drawers. I liked the router so much, that I just purchased a second one from Rockler! Your service is excellent - keep up the good work!

First router I have ever owned. Recommended by a pro. I can't be happer. Powerful and easy to use. I did have to purchase a base that had a 2" hole. The stock base would not handle the 1/2" roundover bit I purchased. That router cut through my wood like butter. Looking forward to a long relationship.

I have used Porter-Cable tools for 25 years. I have three routers and two sanders which I depend on. You get what you pay for and it is nice to find a good deal on a quality tool like this. I used this router and it performed as expected. Perfect! Can't wait till the next sale on Porter Cable!

I've recently upgraded ... or should I say, added the 890 series to my shop, because sometimes it's more convenient to have two (or more) routers ... and while I have more than a few routers ... I only had one Porter Cable.
My 690 is a few years old and I'm not even the original owner. I stumbled onto it at an going out of buisness auction ... nobody else even bid on it because quite honestly, the guys in the shop had beaten the hell out of it already ... but ugly as it may be ... it's been the workhorse of my shop ever since. That old dog ran circles around the other brands I have (when they were new).
To the beginer ... or maybe anyone who's shopping for a beginer ... you can find other routers around this price range ... even some cheaper routers ... but based on my personal experience and adventures ... the 690 is the only one you need ... so save yourself a lot of time and aggravation. The quality and care Porter Cable puts into their routers is not only going to let you keep your mind on your work ... it's going to keep you a hell of a lot safer than those cheaper models.

I have two Porter-Cable 690's, and wouldn't part with either of them. One is an older model (6902 Type 4) that I picked up a garage sale ... it is mounted in my router table. The other is a newer variable speed model with carrying case, fixed base and plunge base. These routers are work-horses. IMHO, you cannot buy a better router.

Bought this router to permanently go into my new Router Lift FX. It fit perfectly and works like a champ. Only regret is that I didn't know about the $20 rebate until 6/30/11 from Porter Cable and pitched the box. Needed the UPC from the packaging. : All in all, a good value, especially with the $50 gift card.

This is a high quality router, but has practical design flaws. Purchase came with a really cool free dovetail jig so I am keeping it. However, the unit is sold with a sub-base that has a center hole that is too small for its own factory supplied collets. The collet will hit the base when the base adjustment is retracted up. Larger bits with a circumference larger than 1.25" can cause the sub-base to get dangerously caught between the Router bit and the collet rotating edge. Secondly, the control switch is poorly located on the upper motor housing. I would recommend you choose carefully depending on your intended use. You will be disappointed if you are using bits with any portion of the profile/contour larger than 1.25" Diameter. You must purchase PC 2.5" sub-base to get around this sub-base issue as an option.

In my opinion Porter Cable makes the best router available. I have used many and owned a few and this one blows the rest out of the water. I have owned this model for about 4 years and love it. Mine came with a plunge base attachment that is handy but if you are using more than one base or using it in a table it is more convenient to have a second router for convenience. It has far outlived others I have used and it has gone through all types and hardnesses of wood like a hot knife through butter. Keep in mind that the quality of the bit will determine the outcome of the cut. Don't skimp there. This is my personal favorite of tools in the shop.
