Aluminum oxide grinding wheels are a giant step above conventional cutting wheels, which tend to burn tools as the grinding surface becomes dull and glazed.
  • Ideal for chisels and plane irons.
  • Made of granulated aluminum oxide with a vitrified white bond, which allows the grains of abrasive to wear off, providing a consistently fresh grinding surface.
  • The 6" wheels have a 1" arbor hole with bushings for 7/8", 3/4", 5/8" and 1/2" arbors.
  • 8" dia. wheels have 1" width and 1" dia. arbor hole; includes reducer bushing to fit 3/4" and 5/8" shafts.
  • Recommended for maximum 4140 RPM.
  • Dressing stone stick No longer available.

I own and operate a sharpening business. Working with knives you have be extremely careful not heat up the edge, while sharpening. If I have a very bad blade I use the oxide stone to completely re-dress a new edge. What I have found is that the stone, when used carfully, does not heat up the knife edge and allows me to put out a better product.

I can always use a good grinding wheel. This one is nice and shiny and will be put to good use. Now that I know Rockler has these, I have my source for reordering in the future.

I have used the normal grey grinding stones for may years and wanted to give stone a try. Looking over the stone I can quickly was about to tell that it needed dressing before use. This stone is SOFT and found that my washer type wheel dress was useless on this stone. I was not able to square it up. I kept making grooves on the wheel surface. I have gone out and bought a "T" shape diamond dresser which did the job well. The stone cuts fast and smooth but will burn the steel in a heart beat so be careful. The only down side of this stone is that it makes a mess. Lots of white powder everywhere. Get a your self a T shape diamond dress wheel dresser to keep the stone true.

I agree with one of the previous posts in that these White Alum. Oxide wheels are far better than the wheels that traditionally come on your grinder. I have the 100 grit and 150 grit wheels. They work really good for sharpening my turning tools and the tools don't heat up nearly as fast as with the grey wheels.

My wheel was terribly out of balance. When I attached the wheel and turned on my 8" ginder, it vibrated horribly and bounced around on my bench (something not done with any other wheels I have had).

The 8" wheel it's self is great. The cheap plastic inserts supplied for smaller shaft grinders such as mine are not great, since they're apparently not very round. The wheel is so bad out of round that I've taken over 1/16 off dressing it and it's still not there. It looked to be at least 1/8 inch out of round and really vibrated the machine in operation. Would I buy anohter NO !

Exactly as I expected it, no surprises. They're not GREAT wheels, but they're GOOD wheels - far and away better than the grey ones that usually ship with a grinder. This was a coarse stone, to be used for rough shaping - I keep a good pink (next time I'll try the blue) 120-grit stone on the other side for actual sharpening. As always, it took a minute or two to get it to run true on my grinder.
