First off, I have mainly had Sears routers up until this point, the current Sears model we (Dad & I hobby together) is variable speed, soft start, regular base router. Model number I dunno right off hand. And at about 60-80 bucks it is well worth the price. I first used a PC router of my Uncles, it's of the same exact model. I loved it but at the time really didn't have the extra money to pay $209 for only a 1.75 HP router when I could get 2 Sears routers for the same. Recently I had the extra money and got it for my Dad for christmas, compare the PC 690 to Sears, well just saying the S word around it is an insult. Granted we haven't got to use this one much but my uncle has used his for almost 3 years now, no major problems at all. Now about the router, The Soft start is exactly that, soft! The Variable Speed I love, it has a wide range. The low end surprised me on how slow it'll run.
The solid routing base is solid, and sturdy. The plunge base has options out the wazu. the ability to custom set 2 or 3 (I forget) allen set screws on the depth guage. The ability to set how far back up the router will go when you raise it up, after you install the bit, ie. a plunge bit, you can lower the router to the table till the bit touches, lock it in, drop you're depth bar, lock it down, move your depthmarker to 0 and you have perfect plunge cuts each time! and exactly marked each time.
I read one of the wood Magazines we get, they did a review on the top so many routers, 10 I think. Anyway, same model but only plunge, they said it was old fashion styled and needed updated. If you ask me, why change something that is solid, has been around for quite a while, tried and true, and that is dependable. It's not style and comfort, it's how well something rounds an edge, cuts a cove, cuts letters in a sign and plunges to that depth that has to be just perfect each time to exactly .3750in. or you're $30 custom glass won't fit.
Sorry most of this is just talk and not numbers and exact details, I dont have most of that here and for those of you just starting won't understand most of it. But for the price, quality and the ability to plunge and go solid base like that! It's unbeatable, easy to use, and once you're plunged, let the lever go, it holds in place, push it clear to the right and it's locked solid in place. Get it, you won't regret it.

I have purchased and used several routers ... this one is definitely the keeper. It is a quality tool, and with decent quality bits, it performs like a champ.
When I purchased it, I added a Porter-Cable Router Base (Part #61798), which I permanently installed in my Vermont-American router table. This gives me the flexibility to use either the fixed or the plunge base in hand-held applications, and easily switch it to a table-mounted router.

I have a review in the original 690 router icon. The best of routers as I have used many and owned a few. Don't buy something less thinking it will do the same as this one will. I am biased toward many Porter Cable tools as I own a few and have been happy with all. You get what you pay for and Porter Cable has never come close to letting me down. The value is not a clearance price but is in the product, it's user-friendliness and it's long rugged life. Don't settle for less even if you are starting out. You will only upgrade to this anyway. Remember the quality of the bit will determine the outcome of the cut, don't skimp there.
