Thanks to Alan at the Maplewood store on the heads up on this shellac. It is very fast to dry and tack up, and I found this out while brushing it on. I did find out that it goes on best with an air gun. Leaves a beautiful finish and really brings out the grain.

Despite the prominent label "Sanding Sealer," it is simply a 100% dewaxed amber shellac. It appears to have some proprietary solvents that increase shellac's normal pot life of 6-12 months to several years. I buy it by the gallon and use it to add depth to wood. Sometimes, it's the only finish I use and sometimes, it's just a good first coat under another finish. It's a good barrier coat for silicone contamination refinishing PledgeR damage, urine smells, knot resin, and musty odors. I have refreshed several antique pieces by simply first cleaning and sanding, then applying a couple of coats of this. For just an hour's work, the piece comes back to life.

After reading many positive reviews of Zinsser Sealcoat, I gave it a try. I'm a convert now. Easy application, very fast drying time, what little odor there is dissipates quickly, low price, and a wonderful finish. I can't say enough good things about this stuff.

I couldn't have been more disappointed with this product. It says it's appropriate under any clear finish and gives a rich tone to the wood. My floor was very light, near white in areas, prior to applying this. As you can see from the picture, after one coat it looks as though a stain was applied. A "rich tone" I could have lived with, but this gave it a whole new color, which is not what I was going for. We're resanding the whole floor and going with a different product.

Please Note: This finish has a yellow and will give untreated wood a honey like appearance. I refinished the doors and drawers of my kitchen cabinets. They are oak and I thought that they were stained honey oak. I took the finish off of one and could not find a stain to match. I took the door to Rockler and the manager said that the lacquer that the cabinets were finished with colored the cabinets that way. There was no stain. He recommended this product as a base with Arm-R-Seal as a top coat. They both have the same yellow cast as the lacquer. It matches perfectly and the Zinzer base coat made the top coat look very deep. I love it.

I just finished a cradle for my step daughter upcoming baby. I made it out of Cherry, and was searching for a good finish that would bring out the grain. I was planning to use a water base urethane since I had it on hand and it dries quickly thus allowing for far fewer dust bumps. The problem is that water base urethane can leave a rather bland finish if used alone. In thinking about what to do, I remembered a fairly recent Wood Magazine article about Shellac. The key was to use Shellac that did not contain any wax. I applied this product by wiping it on with a microfiber cloth. It was almost hard to get it to run because it dries so quickly and even if it does run, it is easily to sand out and doesn’t show through the final finish. I was able to apply two coats of SealCoat, sand with 220 grit and spray two coats of water base urethane in one day.
I really like this methodology and will continue to use it as it provides a very nice appearance and finish.

I first learned of this product from an article in Woodworker's Journal by Michael Dresdner. Since then, I have used this sealer on numerous projects including a maple stairway, and over 1300 feet of natural maple case work and trim. It seals guickly and maintains a very clear natural look. It is easy to apply by brush or HVLP spray gun and reworks and sands beautifully if necessary. I top coat with General Finishes EF High Performance Poly which allows me to apply numerous coats on a single day in the shop...great product, easy to use, wonderful results.

"Every time I have been in a Rockler store around the country I have left feeling that I received wonderful service and most always had exactly what I needed in stock at a fair to great price. the only complaint, if it can be called that, is that I have to drive over 45 minutes to reach the nearest Rockler store. My wife probably appreciates that distance, as I am certain that if one was as close as I wished it to be, we would have very little left in our checkbook!"
