I made this pen and the matching pencil, along with making a gavel out of the same block of ebony wood that I purchased from Rockler. They all turned out beautifully. Fortunate for me, however, that I "test" assembled the pen and pencil, before doing any gluing, using the bare tubes in the kits. I found that the pencil came with the wrong size tubes. I called Rockler and received excellent response. They promptly mailed me a packet of the correct tubes for the pencil. My project was still completed on time for the gift giving that I custom made it for.

Pen package had the wrong tubes both the same length different diameters and when doing final fingerprint wipe after assembly of acrylic pen, gold finish came off hardware.

While the final product can be admirable, the pen is very complex, and easy to assemble incorrectly.

I have made this pen several times with great success. I will agree that the instructions are written poorly, but when turned correctly, it makes a very nice pen. I also had issues with the bushings when I first started making pens. In order to make this pen correctly, you must make sure to cut the blank short as instructed, or the pen will not work correctly.

Once I dug out the correct bushings (I try to remember to check) the kit worked as advertised.

Based on pen cap measurements the butt end of the finial cap needs to fit inside of the twist mechanism when the pen cap is . It doesn't fit well, and prevents the last step of the pen assembly to "Slide cap over twist mechanism on pen body" from being successfully completed. I have tried machining related parts to improve the fit with only limited success.

I will agree that the pen kit and assembly instructions are not in-sync with the actual procedure for assembling the pen. Out of three tries and three pen kits,I did manage to get one complete pen. Not Good.
