Our Heirloom Crib plan adheres to United States Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines in regard to spacing of the slats, the height of the mattress, and the design of the posts. Please do not change the design unless you are familiar with these guidelines.

My sister-in-law told me she was pregnant while I was working in my shop and then asked if I would build them a crib. I spent several weeks looking for just the right mission style crib. The plans were easy to follow for a beginner like myself. I made the crib out of oak from a tree that had been taken down in the neighborhood. The diamond insets were made from cherry. The hardware kit was very easy to assemble. I would highly recommend this plan to anyone. I also used my Rockler Burning tool to engrave my name on the piece. This crib will become a family heirloom.

When our daughter was expecting our first grandchild she looked all over for the right crib. She found some beautiful cribs but they were so expensive. I told her why don't you let me make it for you. I had already made a cradle for her. Our daughter lives in Arizona and we live in Michigan but no problem we would make it and bring it to her. It's made of all oak and a few special woods for the diamond dots and under the top rails. I even engraved my name and year in the crib. Had alot of fun making this crib and so proud of how it turned out.

Early last winter, I was talking to my son on the phone and he asked me what projects I was working on. I told him about some woodturning I was doing, then he asked me if I would like to make a crib. It was his way of telling me I was to be a grandpa soon. So I made a crib out of cherry with cocobollo inserts, then made a changing table with a removable top that could be used for a dresser later on. I modified the plans by making solid panels for the ends and mortised the slats into the side rails instead of using the spacer blocks. All in all, it was a rewarding project to build and went well as the directions were thorough.

I have built several projects using plans in the Workbench Magazine. These plans were printed from the magazine. I ordered the plans and hardware kit from Rockler at the end of March. The plans came right away and the hardware package came a few days later. The woodworking plans were excellent. I built the crib from hard maple with black walnut accents. I will be taking this crib to my step son and his girlfriend. My only complaint was that there were no instructions for the hardware kit. It took about an extra 40 minutes to determine just where each threaded insert was to be located and just how the other hardware fit together.

I am fairly new to woodworking and have been attempting more complicated projects over the past few years. Last year, when my wife and I found out we were pregnant, I decided to build a crib and found that this plan was the most complete and well written plan I could find. It was also unique in that before we were officially pregnant, we were on our honeymoon in Egypt. So the inlay pyramids were especially special to us as we had just been at the Great Pyramids of Giza. So fall of 2008 I started the crib and finished about five weeks after our son was born. Crib was constructed of birdseye maple and black walnut. Crib construction was fairly straight-forward and I really appreciate the step-by-step manner of the plans. This allowed me to check each step off as I finished it, even if I didn't follow the order as I tried to group parts together for more efficiency. I did the dado channel and filler blocks and it worked well for me. When the crib was assembled, I finished the crib with a seal coat of shellac/DNA, then a stain coat of shellac/DNA with Transtint Vintage Maple dye stain. I topcoated the crib with two coats of Min-Wax Wipe on Poly. All in all a great plan for my most complicated woodworking project thus far. This will not be the last Rockler plan I purchase and my experience with Rockler has been excellent to date, with most orders coming in 1-2 days from time of order. Thanks much!

This was my first woodworking project ever, when I told everyone I wanted to do it, they thought I was crazy and always asked me, shouldn't you start with something like a cradle first? My response, nah, I want to do a crib.
The plans and hardware were great and I modified the plan to make it convert into a toddler bed also by removing the dropdown gate and placing a brace mage of cherry and the spare metal brace in the front. I did run into a problem/mistake I made with the dropdown gate, but I made it work, but this was my fault and not the plans. I did the dado and spacer blocks for the slats, but I did a 1/8th inch roundover on all the slats leaving a little squared off at the ends to match up with the filler blocks, it worked great!
Overall, I really enjoyed the project and had fun seeing it come together, I made it all from solid cherry wood finished with several coats of danish oil and a couple coats of briwax to finish it off.

Great plans. I used the basic layout to draw plans for a matching Craftsman design changing table. I used quarter sawn oak with black walnut as the contrast wood. As woodworkers before me, I took the time to mortise and tendon all joints so as to be able to 1/8" roundover all the slats on both pieces. Go ahead and spring for a motise and tendon tool or the drill press mortise and tendon accessory. You know you want one, and you won't have a better excuse than watching your new baby grab the slats rounded corners! Then you can use it for that Wet-bar design you have been dreaming up. You'll enjoy this project.
