There are literally dozens of good quality marking knives out there to choose from and this one is my favorite. I have been doing a lot of knifewall work with dovetails and this knofe delivers. The flimsy blades that reach into deep pockets delicately might work in pine, but try cutting into maple or walnut with them and you'll wish you had this sturdy tool in your hand. As with all edged tools you have to flatten the back and put your own edge on this one, even if that weren't 100% true, I'd still do just for consistency sake.

I picked this up at one of the retail locations--about a second of handling it convinced me to buy it. It's comfortable as heck, and some test cuts makes me think it'll be really easy to use...now that it's sharp. My only issue was the sharpening, actually. Most of the back was close to flat, but I finally gave up on getting one little spot. The most irritating thing was a pronounced back bevel. It just seemed not quite right for a single bevel marking knife, but that's just me. I finally just resorted to filing away the whole cutting edge and reshaping the front bevel. A lot of probably unnecessary work and some Scary Sharp later, I've got a marking knife I'm pretty thrilled with. It's got good heft, and I can't wait to put it to serious work. After the sharpening process, I'd give it a 5, but that back bevel was enough of a pain to fix that I've knocked it down to 4. But I count it as a good investment in time and money.

This is an excellent tool. It is a comfortable fit in either hand. I will definitely buy a second knife to grind into a "lefty". Sure beats anything that I have used for marking.

This is a very nice knife made by Crown Tools of Sheffield, England. It feels good and stable in my hand. The knife is about 6" long. The 3/4" wide blade protrudes 2" from the 4" long handle which looks like Rosewood. The blade is ground for marking to the right side of a straight edge. I bought a second one on sale so I could grind a second bevel to make it suitable for marking on the left or right side of a straight edge. This should leave a 1 3/8" blade.

As received, this knife had a blade in very poor condition. The edge was jagged, with a burr that could be felt and even be seen. The pointed tip was even bent over. I will re-hone it so it will work, but will never buy again.
