I am happy with this router. I was concerned about some of the reviews I read about it overheating. I would not recommend putting this router in an enclosed router table due to overheating. I use mine almost daily but I am careful to plan my routing with intervals between use to give the router a chance to cool. For example I only rout one set of cabinet door frames & their panels at a time. I would have given it 5 stars if not for the over heating. Overall I doubt I would be any happier with a different router.

So far I am pleased with the router, it is my second router. What a difference from a 1 1/2 hp router with a 1/4 collet. The soft start feature is nice and the router works very well. The above table adjustment is a nice feature also.

I have been a DIY'er for over 20 years now, so I'm no novice to power tools. I have worked many different routers, and I must say that the PC 895 is an excellent tool. I find it hard to put it down, since the first day I turned it on, till present. I enjoy every minute that it's in my hands. Thank you PC for making such a great router. I'm currently looking forward to purchasing a second one to leave in my table and have one ready to use for when I need it. I find that the hands-on micro adjustment is a wonderful addtion makes it more user friendly and just an over all great tool.

I bought the 895 combo primarily for the table top adjustment capability. The micro adjustment is great. I did have to retro-fit (drill and counter-sink) my router table to accomodate the adjustment device which was a simple task. Save countless time when routing raised panel rails and stiles and panels. The soft start and variable speed features are great. All in all, a super package.

I have been in the woodworking since Jimmy Carter was in Office. I own a lot of routers. I really liked the ergonomics of the Porter cable and so bought the 893pk router package. It has a nice soft start, very easy to reach off switches and great balance. The problem was the plunge base. Since I do a lot of work that demands precise and repeatable plunges, such as mortises for floating tenons I need a router that plunges straight and true. The slop in the PC plunge base made it useless for such uses. I sent the following inquiry to Porter-Cable and was automatically redirected to the stock answer page. In the common interest I wish to share the following. To Porter Cable: I recently purchased the 893pk router package. I discovered that the 8931 plunge base has 1/32” of slop in the bushing on the secondary guide rod. I went back to the store and discovered that all the display models also shared this defect. Your engineers have to know that this much play in the plunge guides renders this base absolutely useless for centering mortises or any other work which requires repeatable accuracy. In short, it is an unacceptable wood working tool. I consider the 890 series to have the best ergonomic design of any mid-sized router. Unfortunately, while the fixed base is fine the plunge base as it is now manufactured has no place in the wood shop. The inherent inaccuracy will lead to endless misalignment of joints and hours of wasted effort and substantial wastage of stock. I would truly love to own this product if this problem is corrected. Is Porter Cable aware of this deficiency and are there any plans to correct it? I was then automatically redirected to the stock answer and question cue: Here is the Official Stock Answer I received from Porter Cable: Stock Question: “There is an unacceptable amount of lateral deflection of the bit when plunging. How do I fix this?” Stock Answer: “Plunge routers typically have lateral movement where stationary units do not. When performing plunge operations use a bit that has a point. A spiral bit is also preferred over a straight-fluted bit. These bit configurations will aid in minimizing lateral deflection.” To further minimize lateral movement, lock the unit before making the plunge. Then slightly loosen the lock enough to allow the plunge. If you continue to experience excessive lateral movement, contact your nearest service center. Click Here to locate your nearest service center What nonsense. We all know from experience that Plunge routers do not “typically have lateral movement”. My Bosch doesn’t. Its rock solid. My Hitachi doesn’t. Its rock solid. The Porter Cable I purchased does. What they should say is Porter Cable at least the 8931 has lateral movement. And think about the “lock the unit before making the plunge” recommendation! They have to be aware of the problem since they have a stock answer all ready to launch. You can decide for yourself if you want to buy this product. I returned mine. Fortunately I bought it from Rockler so retuning it was not a problem.

I own a few routers that I bought when I was first starting out ... so you could say I've leared through trial and error ... although my wife would say it was mostly error ... most of the time something would happen and when I went asking around to find out why it happened ... the answer always seemed to be ... you need a better router. Well I solved that problem when I bought the Porter Cable 690 series and it quickly became my workhorse ... I was still using the others for quick and easy jobs from time to time as a matter of convenience ... until I got the 895. Now, my first router (a Craftsman) is actually a corless paperwieght on my desk ... I would sell it, but I wouldn't wish that nightmare on my worst enemy.
Not only does this router have the power to deal with any job ... the Porter Cable routers have been engineered and put together better than any of the other routers I own or have used. I have a few which have similar features, but nobody has pulled em all off on one router quite like Porter Cable ... and the micro-adjuster is a great help when you're working on the table.

"I only get to visit the Pittsburgh store once a year so I make sure to make my visit count. The staff there is always helpful and very patient as I zip from aisle to aisle like a child in a toy store."
