This was my first experience with Gel Top Coat, but certainly will not be my last.

After using spray, brush and other means in an attempt to get a good finish on some of my projects and not being very satisfied I decided to try the Gel Coat. I found this finishing process much easier, less messy, and I obtained a much better finished project.

My wife is in the process of refinishing our dining table and chairs, and is very pleased with the Gel Coat finish too. If she's happy, shouldn't I be happy to?

The easiest, fastest, most foolproof finish I have ever tried...and I have used a boatload of them. When used over a cut shellac base, even goes on blotch-free on cherry. I now use it on most of my projects with uniformly satisfying results, which was not always the case with other finishes I have tried.

Sister in law (professional cabinet maker) used as a top coat over shellac base on walnut veneer side table, which I decided to adapt to a vanity. Needed multiple coats for water resistance and durability, and I agree with S. Monks that application is easy. Clarity doesn't seem to change significantly with 5~6 coats. Will definitely use on upcoming projects.

This stuff goes on easily. On cherry I first applied another brand of poly/oil to bring out the grain. Then I applied this. That color mix on cherry is spectacular. Expect to do 5+ coats. My only complaint is that what they call SATIN I would call FLAT. I really really really wish they could come up with a semi gloss. This is just too dull for my taste.

I refinish furniture on a regular basis. I agree with Don Eby that it is dull.
I suggest to Don to use one part satin MinWax and one part gloss MinWax to get a semi gloss finish. I start with General Finishes Gel Topcoat and end with the Min Wax mixture. It's also important to sand finely and produce a bit of a sheen on the wood before you apply the wipe on gel. Doing this, helps get a better luster.

I applied this finish to a walnut chair I made. I applied it with a foam brush as recommended on the can. I was unable to smooth it out and it did not self-level at all, despite drying in a relatively cool place. As others have mentioned, it also ends up with a flat finish, not satin. I ended up using a Minwax wipe-on poly and it was much better.

Used on newly built birch base cabinet in bathroom and the gel did not significantly change the stain color (this was the hoped-for result). Application was very easy and hoping the color will remain and not amber over time (in 3 months it hasn't visibly changed). Will use it again for sure.
