This project was a lot of fun. I painted mine to match our house (a brick Tudor), and used plastic slate tiles for the roof. I agree with many of the other comments here. The parts list isn’t 100% accurate, but I live near a lumber yard, so I bought lumber along the way. Some thoughts and advice based on my experience. First, check with your town to determine whether you need a permit. My town requires a zoning permit for any type of structure such as this. Fortunately, I had gotten one before the project started and it helped me with a neighbor who complained. The swings, slide and other hardware I purchased from [local home center]. I opted for the less expensive versions of all and they are just fine. It took about 6 weeks from start to finish, and it was a really fun project.

Having a blast building this playhouse for my 3 year old twin boys. No, the plans are not 100% accurate, however, it is not a deal breaker. I am somewhat experienced with this type of project and have been able to quickly figure out what the plan designs call for. I have priced the project through completion at $1,200. Much better playset then one of those kits for the same price.

I am also building this playhouse. Along with the comments already noted by Eric I found that the 2x8 pressure treated lumber was measuring out at 7 1/2" wide instead of the expected 7 1/4 so just a heads up to measure your wood before you notch your 4x4's.

I'm in the middle of building this right now. The only thing that really gripes me is that this is only a magazine article reprint, not a set of plans as advertised. A list of materials is included, but it isn't 100% accurate (several items were left off, resulting in several more 40-mile round trips to [local home center]...grrrr!). There is no cutting guide to tell you which items get cut from what board - this would have been included in a real set of plans too...so you have to guess a little bit. There are a few other minor annoyances and tidbits that are left out which would have been included in a real set of plans.
Still, overall, it is a fun project. It definitely isn't for a pure beginner, unless you have experienced help nearby to guide you. And be prepared for sticker shock when you find out the total cost of the wood, fasteners, swings, hardware, etc. comes out to almost $1600. The cedar shakes used on this project happen to be a special-order/special high price ($500) item from the lumber yards in my area. I am substituting asphalt shingles for the shakes and making several other substitutions as well.

Editor's note: This plan is published by August Home Publishing from Workbench Magazine material.

What everyone else wrote is pretty accurate. Its fun to build. Definitely rock-solid. It being a magazine article does not bother me, since there are plenty of diagrams and illustrations, and the text of the article is very descriptive on how to go about the different steps.

Biggest gripe is the materials list. Not very accurate. I have lots of extra lag screws and washers left over. One thing I caught luckily before buying was that the list tells you to get 5/4 x 6 x 10' decking boards. Then you end up cutting them to less than 8 feet. So why spend the extra money for 10 foot boards, wasting money and wood?

Overall though, this is a very good plan. I like that it is "over-designed" and very rigid. I know that if I use a good stain and protect it from the elements, its will last a lifetime. My kids can't wait to play on it.

I am currently building this project and so far it is going well. The instructions so far seem pretty good, but I have noticed the same thing as Eric.. some things were missing from the materials list, so I had to make a few extra trips to the store. I thought I caught them all before hand (after seeing Eric's review), but I missed some. It's definitely not as simple as buying a kit, but I am somewhat of a novice and it is coming alot quite well.
