I remodel peoples homes for a living and build furniture as a hobby. I built one of these two years ago, didnt know where the plans came from as I was doing this for my boss at the time.(just came across these plans here) Getting the basic idea behind the instructions was half the battle. As others have said, flipping back and forth in the plans to understand them was the only way to build this thing. we modified the shape as per the customers request,(made it bigger). But it went together well, the customer was very happy. Every neighbor that could see it wanted one.

Great set of plans, the only thing I would have to say negative about them is I was expecting them to be a little more detailed than they were. The measurements were as accurate as they come, but the actual directions could have been written out in a little more detail. Everything went together just like it said, I just had to keep flipping from one page to another as opposed to going from step 1 on to step 2, I had to go from 1 to 10, then 9 to 2 and so on. If you order the plans, be prepared to study them for a week before attempting to put together. I still give this set of plans a rating of "very good" because they were and though I haven't finished constructing my pergola yet (because I work all the time), it's really starting to take shape and the pieces fit like a glove since I am a perfectionist when it comes to measuring and cutting. I would also like to mention that instead of priming and painting like it called for, I actually just weatherproofed it with red stain and it gave it the same look as it does on the cover of the plans, only more durable. Thanks again and I will definitely recommend this to anybody who wants a nice arbor, as a matter of fact, my buddy who's helping me with this one is going to build him one when we get done with mine. Should be a little easier now that we're almost done with this one.

These plans were absolutely perfect. I built this pergola with a friend and his wife and it took us two weekends. The plan was very easy to customize to his patio. We used cedar for the post and redwood for the rest. We hit all of the parts with a belt sander before assembly and hit most parts with a round over bit in a router and these two steps really gave it a custom finished look. This pergola was more stout than any other I have seen and really gives it a rich look. Certainly worth the asking price!

Several issues came aross when building:
some diagram measurements should have been more specific i.e. the main joists and end gables blocking assembly.
Plans list to use the blocking mounting "J" post which screwed into the "k" board. The "k" board measured 10 X 3-1/2" you suggested to use 1-1/2" deck screws which kept splitting the "k" board, so I had to use galvanized finish nails which worked out better. The finish nails worked because there is not much weight on the "k" board since the fact that the "j" post keeps the pergola racked from moving from one way or the other. [] Plans called for cedar but I did not have access to that so I used cypress. Other than the two issues listed above the plans were very good and we are happy with the finished product.
