This was my first big building project and the plans were very helpful with lots of excellent diagrams details. However I found two issues with the plans that could be improved. First, the pilot hole size recommendations are for hardwood projects. If using a soft wood, your pilot holes need to be much smaller. Second, there are very precise measurements for the post base trim pieces and a small note stating that the pieces are initially cut oversize and then trimmed to fit. The measurements listed are the final size, not the oversize. So when it shows a piece of trim as 7 1/8, make the initial piece 7 1/2 and plan to trim it down later. I had to recut, sand and finish all 32 pieces of trim because of that.
I built mine using ACQ treated southern yellow pine and finished it with Cabot's Australian Oil Stain. I took in the neighborhood of three and a half years between lumber delivery and completion due to a perfectionist's nature, some substandard quality wood and lack of experience, confidence and tools.
I really lost a lot time because I didn't have access to a router with a 1/2 arbor. You've got to have one to use a 1 1/2 inch pattern cutting bit. I also started out thinking I could use a palm sander for the whole job but a belt sander is really necessary.
Other advice to decrease build time and improve quality :
Make sure you get straight and true lumber to start with. Some of my stock was warped and twisted, which I didn't notice until after delivery, and it really made assembly difficult.
Make sure you can make straight and square cuts before you start on your project. Some seemingly minor errors in the notches and blocking pieces caused me a lot more grief than I expected during assembly.
I think this is a great project for someone without a lot of building experience. Despite the challenges I had to overcome, I'm very pleased with the finished product. I learned a lot and the plans had a lot to do with that.

I have been looking over the plans, and they seem very complete and detailed. I think I may make a few changes that will make it a little less time consuming for me. Materials list is very complete and makes it easy to figure out costs needed to start the pergola. I can't wait to get it built. The changing the pergola size measurements was a little more confusing them I was expecting, however its not impossible to figure out.

Very good set of plans. The info is all there you just have to take some time reviewing the drawings and the instructions. I am in the process of building one now. The design is very pleasing and attractive. I am very much looking forward to see it complete.

I remodel peoples homes for a living and build furniture as a hobby. I built one of these two years ago, didnt know where the plans came from as I was doing this for my boss at the time.(just came across these plans here) Getting the basic idea behind the instructions was half the battle. As others have said, flipping back and forth in the plans to understand them was the only way to build this thing. we modified the shape as per the customers request,(made it bigger). But it went together well, the customer was very happy. Every neighbor that could see it wanted one.

Great set of plans, the only thing I would have to say negative about them is I was expecting them to be a little more detailed than they were. The measurements were as accurate as they come, but the actual directions could have been written out in a little more detail. Everything went together just like it said, I just had to keep flipping from one page to another as opposed to going from step 1 on to step 2, I had to go from 1 to 10, then 9 to 2 and so on. If you order the plans, be prepared to study them for a week before attempting to put together. I still give this set of plans a rating of "very good" because they were and though I haven't finished constructing my pergola yet (because I work all the time), it's really starting to take shape and the pieces fit like a glove since I am a perfectionist when it comes to measuring and cutting. I would also like to mention that instead of priming and painting like it called for, I actually just weatherproofed it with red stain and it gave it the same look as it does on the cover of the plans, only more durable. Thanks again and I will definitely recommend this to anybody who wants a nice arbor, as a matter of fact, my buddy who's helping me with this one is going to build him one when we get done with mine. Should be a little easier now that we're almost done with this one.

These plans were absolutely perfect. I built this pergola with a friend and his wife and it took us two weekends. The plan was very easy to customize to his patio. We used cedar for the post and redwood for the rest. We hit all of the parts with a belt sander before assembly and hit most parts with a round over bit in a router and these two steps really gave it a custom finished look. This pergola was more stout than any other I have seen and really gives it a rich look. Certainly worth the asking price!

Several issues came aross when building:
some diagram measurements should have been more specific i.e. the main joists and end gables blocking assembly.
Plans list to use the blocking mounting "J" post which screwed into the "k" board. The "k" board measured 10 X 3-1/2" you suggested to use 1-1/2" deck screws which kept splitting the "k" board, so I had to use galvanized finish nails which worked out better. The finish nails worked because there is not much weight on the "k" board since the fact that the "j" post keeps the pergola racked from moving from one way or the other. [] Plans called for cedar but I did not have access to that so I used cypress. Other than the two issues listed above the plans were very good and we are happy with the finished product.
