This joiner is easy to set up, easy to use, and the best part - easy to change cutting blades. Being able to change from 2" to 4" blades is of great value to me.

Having research biscuit cutters I was leaning toward the high end units for the accuracy and operation, but after reading the reviews both here and at other web sites and given the cost it was difficult to pass up. I can say that it certainly lives up to the earlier reviews and did I mention the price was right?

I did a fair amount of research on comparable models before I purchased my biscuit joiner. I am so glad I did. The PC model #557 was awesome right out of the box. I was 90% complete with a side table I was making out of cherry. Last step was to join the 4 pieces for the table top and 3 for a lower shelf. I rushed home, opened the box and was making cuts within minutes. It was very intuitive, easy to adjust and cut very clean recesses. All of the movable parts locked tightly into place for great repeat cuts. I found that the dust bag filled up fairly quick, but I'm not sure a bigger bag is the answer (I probably cut too fast).
I have found a ton of uses for it and sometimes even look for excuses to use it to reinforce already-ample joints. Definitely worth the money and has yet to show any major signs of wear. Nice job Porter-Cable. Nice job.

I have been using a biscuit joiner attached to my router for twenty years and decided to try a self contained biscuit joiner. I have other Porter Cable tools and have been very happy with the way they stand behind their products so I purchased the 557. I should have purchased one years ago. It is so easy to use and the line up marks are perfect for close work. I highly recommend this model for wood workers.

I bought this to replace a entry-level Ridgid biscuit cutter, partly because the dust port on the Ridgid constantly clogged (plus it occasionally slipped and was imprecise in set up). The Porter-Cable is a much better machine, easy to set-up and cuts great biscuits, but the clogging issue is only slightly better. Can't understand why they can't make the dust port a bit bigger so it doesn't clog.

Aside from the dust shoot which constantly clogs, this is a beautiful machine. However, when something as basic as dust collection doesn't work, the rest of the tool is worthless, in my book. What a nuisance! Wish I'd bought a different one.

Recently purchase this from Rockler for a great deal. After much research I chose the 557. So far this thing is great, easy to set up, easy to use.  The dust port stinks. Try to use the bag and it clogs up after a couple of cuts. It has a 1" port and I have yet to find an adapter for my 1.25" vac hose.

Like others here, I did quite a bit of research before settling on the PC 557. The fact that Rockler had it on sale, including a big supply of 0, 10, and 20 biscuits, made it a real no-brainer. Overall, I'm happy with the product. Like all the other PC products I have, it hits a sweet spot with price, performance, and quality. It's more than adequate for the occasional or amateur woodworker. But, if you're looking for real professional quality, you might want to evaluate one of the costlier units. Two complaints that prevent me from giving it 5 stars: 1} The dust collector with bag is a total joke. I can hardly believe that a design engineer actually signed off on this. The exhaust tube clogs after just just a couple of cuts, requiring you to stop and clear it out. The dust output also accepts a 1" vacuum hose, which appears to be the better choice here. 2} I'm working on a project with some 1/2" stock, and the depth plate bottoms out just a hair too high to hit the center of the stock, maybe 1/32" or so, even with the adjustment screw removed. Not horrible, but annoying. It appears that if I want a centered cut, I'll have to use a 1/32" shim material between the bottom plate and the stock. Obviously, I can get the two facing cuts to match up, but still...

Just purchased the Porter Cable Biscuit Joiner kit model 557 this past weekend. Had been told how much work it would save, and a woodworking magazine gave the PC557 very high marks. They were right. I went from never touching one of these machines to finishing installing the face front for a 7 foot tall bookcase in a matter of minutes. Great idea, great product. The only flaw I see is the dust bag. It is pretty worthless. You have to let the "chips fall where they may" as I did or connect to a shop vac. Other than that, I highly reccommend this product.
