The directions call for a 5/8 inch hole 3 1/2 inches deep. My Forstner bit wasn't up to that. So, I made a 5/8" hole, 1 3/4 inch deep (for the main insert), then finished with a 1/2" bit to the required 3 3/4" depth. It was a two step process, but avoided buying more tools to complete the project.

Good kit, fairly easy to make. One minor problem is that the brass ferrule tends to get nicked up while in the bag with the other hardware. I've made several of these and enjoy making them.

These kits were fun to make and are attention getters at Craft Shows. They are functional and useful, and therefore make excellent gifts for the DIYers.

This review is from the perspective of a new turner. Been woodworking a while, turning a few months. This seemed like a good skill building project. It was. I love the result in the end. I had to scrap an attempt as I had some vibration while drilling the shaft hole. It left it too large for the hardware. Second try, great. I love that I can fit it to my preference. Cheap and quick are bonuses as well.

I ordered ten of these kits in the fall (when they were on sale for $5 each) for Christmas presents. The parts are solid and well-made. For those interested in my choice of woods, they are (from left-to-right):
1. Purpleheart & maple
2. Sapele & zebrawood
3. Sapele & redheart
4. Wenge & carnarywood
5. Wenge & redheart
6. Macassar ebony & maple
7. Sapele, zebrawood, wenge, ash, macassar ebony & maple
8. Wenge & maple
9. Redheart & maple
10. Wenge & zebrawood
11. Purpleheart & canarywood

Great way to use up left over pieces of scrap wood. Fun project which lets you vary on handle design. I made four for Christmas gifts. Would recommend that after drilling the 5/8” hole and installing the brass ferrule ring to lightly file the inside of the hole with a rat tail file to make it easier to pound in the knurled metal insert.
