I've owned a Jet 1236 for about six months now, and I've really enjoyed using it. The only things I would change are the height (I recommend building your own base to raise it up a tad if you're over 5' 8"), and the solid faced manual rotation handle (you have to remove it to be able to pop out a taper jig). Aside from those two things, it has done everything I need it to do.

Okay beginner's lathe. Works better if you replace the belt with a link belt, and put a piece of plywood and make a shelf to put 100 lbs. of sand on the legs. Keep an eye out for the head stock and tail stock getting out of alignment -- pretty common. Other than that, I've had the lathe for over 5 years and it had turned all sorts of stuff.
