I have used this system for sharpening my lathe tools for about 2 years now and am VERY happy with its results. My previous experience was several years on an older Delta wet grinder – the Jet just has more to offer. The gouge sharpening jig is well worth the investment.
Dave from Milpitas, CA: I had a similar experience. It turned out to be a bad speed control (Jet part number 708015-116). The part took about 15 minutes to swap out and cost $11 + shipping/handling.

Excellent machine. Sharpens scary sharp with less fuss than jigs and stones or sandpaper.
Plastic bushings on the straight edge jig fall out too easily. The stone had quite an angle on it as received and required a fair amount of work to get it parallel with the support arm.
Other than this I have no complaints and am satisfied with the machine and the price. I will be getting the profiled leather strop for turning tools which should bring them up to the standard I now enjoy with my chisels and plane irons.
A friend of mine has the WorkSharp 3000 which is a really good machine but the Jet is worth the extra price.

The Jet Sharpener is a fine tool. With it I have effortlessly sharpened my carving chisels and turning tools giving them a mirror smooth and razor sharp edge. I sharpend some of my chisels that were abused by co-workers, chisels that I had given up on due to deep chips and unauthorized belt sander grinding, after just a few minutes on this machine I have brought them back to life and locked them up in my toolbox. I have a very large collection of old planes, some I use almost daily, others are too rare to use except on very special projects. Soon most of them will have edges finer than ever before. I'll be able to use them and not worry about how to get them sharp again if they get damaged.
The variable speed motor works very well and is handy when you need to remove a lot of metal such as a chipped tool or regrinding an angle. The water tray catches a lot of water but things will still get wet. I suggest placing an old cookie sheet or food tray under the machine to catch the stray drops of water.
I had a minor problem with my tool, the leather on the strop was very soft in one area causing the tool to move around. I called Jet who sent me a replacement immediately. Jet stands behind thier tools and customer service was very fast and friendly. I have been working with wood for over 25 years and I've never been able to get my tools this sharp before. I highly recommend this machine

This tool exceeds my expectations. I used to sharpen everything by hand not only for myself but for my friends who didn't have the patience (or the practice) to do it correctly. The first time I used this tool I sharpened 4 chisels in less than half an hour. This included set up time and watching a few minutes of the included instructional DVD. Thankfully, the end result exceeded my ability to sharpen by hand!

This product works very well out of the box. However, the axle and the sleeve through which the axle penetrates are not made of stainless steel and they rust rapidly. If I do not use the machine for more than a couple weeks, I must disassemble it and clean all the corrosion off the sleeves and the axle. Had Jet invested another $1.00 or so in the manufacture of this product, this would not happen.
If you're looking for a slow speed sharpener, buy the Tormek instead.

Sorry to say that this is not a very good product. I used it probably 20 times to put a hollow ground edge on planes and chisels as one would expect it to do. Generally I would prep the stone with the diamond surfacing adapter to obtain a surface that was true and normal to the object being sharpened. Then on the last time I used it the motor quit spinning. I called for trouble shooting help, but that wasn't too helpful and they referred me to a repair facility. I called the repair facility they informed me of their rates $80/Hr and suggested I throw the thing away and buy a new one. Anyway, luckily I am a mechanical engineer and pretty good at electrical engineering too. So I'll fix the darn thing and keep you posted as to the root cause and potential solutions, in the day/ months to come. In the mean time I will buy a soft grinding wheel and Veritas jig for my conventional 6" grinder.

I bought this leather wheel as one more accessory for my new Jet Sharpener. It's unique shape really helps with turning tools and carving gouges, which can be difficult edges to maintain. You need to 'feed' the wheel with oil before using it with whatever compound you're applying to the leather wheels of your sharpener. I use regular mineral oil, available from my local drugstore at a low cost. Wipe the oil into your new leather wheel with the machine OFF, then after really saturating it well, apply the compound with the wheel/machine still off.
Finally, once you've got a decent coat of compound going on the face of the wheel, then turn on the machine and lightly apply your stick of compound to the wheel as it turns away from you.
"Pre-oiling" a leather strop wheel greatly reduces the amount of compound needed to coat these strop type wheels.
