I built two Murphy Beds using this hardware for our summer home. Exceptional product and design. I am about to build a third as a wedding gift for my niece. Understand the basic bed is straightforward and within the reach of any woodworker with basic skills, that can follow directions, has access to a sufficient sized space to handle sheet lumber (4'x8), and has access to the required tools. For more skilled woodworkers the basic plan can be enhanced with side cabinets, trim, lighting, to make a beautiful piece of custom furniture. I researched this carefully before building the first two about five years ago, and we (and particularly our guests0 have been delighted with the results.

The Vertical Bed Hardware Queen - Rockler Item # 89632 was excellent all the way around. The hardware is top quality and the detailed step-by-step plans, including a well done DVD video, helped eliminate any guesswork during the fabrication of the bed. I bought a new table saw to use in this project, and even factoring in the price of the saw, I estimate I saved $6,000 to $8,000 over what I would have paid for a factory-sourced Murphy bed of lessor quality.

This product is excellent. As others have said follow the instructions to the letter and do not deviate from the plans in any way. Keep the DVD close at hand, watch it repeatedly and refer to it. Here is what they "don't" tell you. You should add the following to their list before you start: A "large" flat unobstructed work surface, space, A long straight edge cutting guide (for cutting plywood with a circular saw) and a matching saw plate guide. A smooth cutting saw blade. Forstner drill bits are a must. Plenty of time is a must as you can't rush this, If you are under the gun for time forget it. You need some technical ability, if you can't screw in a lightbulb forget it. You need a mechanical pencil with a very fine point for marking cuts, Don't use a chaulk line to make your cuts {line is to thick} all cuts must be perfect. Miter box is a plus for square accurate cuts on the inner bed frame. All cuts must be perfectly square and true. Assembling components must be square and true. The product is great just make sure you have plenty of time and space to do a nice job.

Over the years I have built 3 Murphy beds. The instructions are very detailed and accurate. I have to echo others when they say to read and follow the instructions carefully. I like the Murphy bed because when you need the bed, it folds down easily because of the gas tubes. But, when you don't need it and can use the floor space, it disappears into the wall. I built closets on both sides of the bed so the entire wall is the same depth.

I bought this kit last summer, and the kit works EXACTLY as advertised. Just a word of warning - read the directions through fully BEFORE starting this project and make sure you're following every step in order. If you do you will have a murphy bed and not a "Murphy's law" project you can be proud of.

What has 14 drawers, 6 lights, 6 bookshelves, 2 desks, 1 bed and a telephone? Our son moved out to college and rather than keep an unused bedroom, we opted for a guest/exercise/library room. I had no trouble with the bed hardware or light kits. I do wish the lights recessed fully into the openings. Would recommend this to any woodworker, even novice.

I had converted an old dinning room into wall to wall library, but as I was completing the room my wife, who was 3,000 miles away at the time asked that include a Murphy bed. A gift to her on her return two months later was the completed room with the murphy bed. My kit was missing some screws, but I seemed to have plenty in my personal stock. Though it would seem I am a handyman, I elected to have the lumber yard cut my pieces for precision and do not regret it. If I have any concerns, it might be for future maintenance of hydraulic units as I was not able to make my installation as mobile as the included instructions for ease of access. Still, I don't expect to have any trouble with these units for a long time to come. The installation was near perfect and it is so easy to operate. A great addition to the library for when we have guests.

Great solution for our computer office/ guest room. Plans adapt to most any decorating style and instructions are easy to follow using the video. Very pleased with the results. I actually purchased two sets of hardware because we have two guest rooms and really enjoy the extra space. The customer service was amazing. I had to put the project aside for a few weeks and misplaced a bag of hardware - the Create-a-Bed customer service department sent a replacement free of charge.... not even a handling charge. Amazing!!

Not a project for the weak at heart or the impatient. I am a handi man and have designed and built many of my own projects and it took me some time to get it all together but when completed it is a beautiful addition to the furniture in my house and a comfortable queen size bed for when my children come to visit. Solid hardware and I used all 3/4" oak plywood and solid oak moldings. I stained it with my own mixing of different color stains to match some of my other furniture and it came out great. Not a job for the novice but if the novice wants to try and has a lot of patience and time by reading the instruction booklet and watching the dvd provided it can be accomplished.

I ordered this product Monday morning and it was on my kitchen table Thursday afternoon. It was a lot of hard work to build the bed, but the DVD was excellent and using the plans and the DVD we got it done in no time. We added shelves to one side and a cabinet for my ironing board on the other. It has turned my guest room into a sewing craft room. I was so pleased that when the bed is down the room still looks warm and cozy and the bed looks really inviting.
I really appreciate both the product and the service by Rockler.

Added a room in the basement, a place to go and watch a bit of sports. I ordered the vertical murphy bed as I needed the extra bed when family came for a visit, then after they were gone I wanted my hockey room back. The bed was excellent. I installed it with a display cabinet on each side to display some hockey collections I had, now when my kids come they argue over who gets the room. Follow the instructions, I strongly recomend this to anyone looking for extra space. 5 stars for sure.

Good clear directions.

I was in hurry to get this in a usable state so I put it together without a headboard or face panel, figuring I would work on them later. The lack of a headboard made it tougher to keep the sides straight and parallel (it would have helped correct a slight bow in one side) which made it more difficult to get the cylinder on.

Skipping the face panel I installed a couple 5" wide pine boards to the bottom to hold the legs as the directions call for. This worked but without the face panel the bed was not heavy enough to counterbalance the cylinders and it wanted to fly back up against the wall. So I screwed a couple pieces of rough plywood into the the bottom of the bed (where the face panel will be). The extra weight holds it down just fine.

I want to figure out another way to do the legs ultimately as I just don't particularly care for the having 2-4 little pieces sitting on top of the face panel.

Instructions are very clear. Do what they say, step by step and everything works. Technically, not especially challenging, though layout & cut accuracy are very important. The biggest challenge for me was just dealing with the number of large sheets in a small shop footprint.

My wife wanted to use a spare bedroom for a craft and sewing room but we still needed it for a guest room. She asked about a Murphy bed and after a quick search I found this kit from Rockler.

When it came in the mail I was expecting the box to be much larger than it was, I guess because of the price. The directions are excellent, both the printed and DVD instructions. Having the DVD is especially useful so you can see each step done. It's nothing fancy but the picture is clear and you can see everything you need to.

The plan they provide is makes the construction as simple as possible. I didn't like the idea of the glue-on edge banding and screwed butt joints so I made some changes. I dovetailed the corners of the bed box and used pocket screws in a couple of areas to avoid visible screws. I also used solid wood for the edges, where the plywood would be seen, except for the bed box which I made from baltic birch and I let the edges show.

After looking on the web at commercial Murphy beds, I liked one that looked like a two door cabinet. My wife had the idea of camouflaging the bed feet as coat hooks.

It took me a lot longer (way too long according to my wife) but I'm happy with the result. The cost is relatively high for what you get but it seems to be high quality and there was obviously a lot of effort in the design, which you're also paying for.

Our office/guest room was cluttered and uninviting. We had A large computer table, small dresser and a queen bed in a small room. I did not want to give up the queen bed, but I need more storage space (no basements in Florida) and a computer desk. Therefore are only option was Murphy bed. I looked into buying what I wanted and it would have cost $6000-$8000. I then quickly decided to go with this Create-A-Bed from Rockler. The plans are east to follow. We were able to complete this over a 4 day weekend (working 10 hr days). One piece of advice, plan out your trip to the lumber stores. The Create a Bed comes with a pattern for each of the 8 sheets of ¾’ plywood ($50 each) you will need to buy. Going to the lumber store when it is slow (weekday evenings or Friday night) you can get them to make all or most of the cuts on the 4’ x 8’ sheets plywood. They have the large table saw which makes it easy to make the long cuts, it saves you time and it makes it easier when loading into your vehicle.
The bed came out better than expected and company that has slept on it said it is very comfortable. I also made a small book case along the left hand side of the bed and built an L-shaped computer desk with stock cabinets I bought from [home center]. The Murphy bed alone cost me nearly $600 in materials and the total project cost me approximately $1400. The Murphy bed office completely changed the look and feel of the room. No longer is it cramped and cluttered, it is open and inviting.

I have been wanting to build a Murphy bed for some time now. I made the bed out of 3/4 birch plywood and veneered the face panel out of Madrone Burl and the rest of the bed in Figured Sepele and caped the edge's with solid sapele. Thank you for this Great Design, Me and the Wife could not be happier.

One last thing. I found it is better to mount the headboard 4-6 inches lower than the plans specify or else the pillow can fall down between the headboard and murphy bed box.

This project took all of my woodworking skills. I learned many more. I had to complete the bed before my new shop was finished. It was very frustrating, working in a half built shop, but my wife was good enough to let me build my dream shop so the least I could do was build her this bed. The instructions and DVD couldn't have been easier to follow. I took my time and she had a lot of patience with me and the bed turned out wonderful. We and all our guests are pleased.

Very good product. The instructions and DVD combined lead you through the process and make the construction of the basic unit very straight forward. Following every detail is important, but they don't tell you there is a little room for improvisation on the finish trimwork. I would biscut the foot board instead of using the exposed screwheads because it has little stress imposed on it and it would look better. Very cool operating mechanism, though lacking any potential for "I Love Lucy" moments. Darn!

I built the upright full bed, and a bookcase to fill out the wall in a small bedroom / study. I found the plans and accompanying video CD very easy to follow, and the basic bed extremely easy to build. I modified my bed with can lights in the headboard, and a fold-up reading table and LED lights on the front. The wiring is run in a groove in the back edge of the plywood cabinet side. .
I've been using the bed regularly for awhile now, and the hardware for this bed is clearly top-quality stuff and suitable for daily use.

Here's a pic of the bed in the "up" position. I used simple decorative strip moldings on the front, in keeping with the plain birch I used to make the bed. The lighting for the reading table is a flexible 12 volt LED strip let into a groove under a thicker molding strip. I used modified hinges to support the table at a good reading angle, and a mechanical touch latch to hold the table in the closed position.

I built the Vertical Mount Murphy Bed for a friend of mind for a small computer/bedroom. The plans & video was very clear & simple. I used Baltic Birch plywood. Instead of storage cabinets on the side I put them on the top, due to the size of the room. Look's great. I do agree with another viewer that price is a litte to high. I have purchased Rockler products for years and have never been disapointed with service or items. When people ask me for special items etc. I refer them to your company.

I've just completed construction and installation. While I can't speak for durability, everything from the plans with cutting recommendations to the video with very clear directions to the quality of the hardware was top notch with but one exception: one of the male pivots was slightly off 90 degrees to the plate. I made one call to the company and a correct replacement was mailed out immediately. One tip: be sure to buy quality plywood and pay attention to the grain pattern during your cutting exercise. I had to apply veneer to poor quality ply making the job much more difficult than it should have been.

I've done alot of various wood working and DIY projects, but this was my first real piece of furniture from scratch. Plans: Easy to follow plans. Detailed enough for an experienced DIY'er. But not necessarily for a first time furniture maker. Since I used 3/4" plywood I wasn't sure how to finish the edges. It wasn't clear whether I should have made the measurements including the thickness of any edging used. To do it again, I would have used solid oak edging and adjusted the cut dimensions, and attached the edging before assembly. Also, the plans don't give any instructions for attaching the additional pulls. It just says "attach". So I'm not quite sure the best way to do that. I'll figure something out. For attaching the bed stops, the plans say to use pan head screws, but the stops have countersunk holes and seem made for the small black screws included with the hardware. But then there are not enough of those screws for the other hardware. Quality of the hardware: Seems excellent and feels very solid. Operates quite smoothly. Ease of construction: I don't have a great setup for ripping large pieces of plywood, but was able to get pretty clean and straight cuts using a straight edge and circular saw. I created it as a slat style bed, instead of using the 1/4in plywood as a platform. I added some support down the center of the frame to keep the slats from bending in the middle of the span. It took me about 50 or 60 hours total, including a couple trips to the hardware store. Assembly and Installation: I was working by myself, and this was a bit challenging as the unit is quite heavy. I recommend getting some help. The bed fits just right into a nook in the bedroom where there had been shelving. The bed room has carpet and it was tricky getting the piece to slide back into the nook and be able to attach the pistons. I used some leftover oak boards and created a couple slider boards with handles that I could use. Then once back into the nook, levered the bed up a bit and pulled out the slider boards. Looks: It looks great now. Although I still need to stain, varnish, and put some veneer ply edging on to finish the edges. I have guest coming and didn't want to have the varnish still off-gassing when they got here. I'm very pleased so far with the product. It looks great and feels solid.

I made this one for a friend who was about to buy one for $2200.00. Now my wife wants one so that will be next month's project.
The plans were well written and easy to follow. I was impressed with the hardware kit and how smoothly it functions. Getting the inner bed frame square is critical. It all comes together after that. I'd recommend it to anyone with a moderate skill at woodworking.
