Air-cooled, dry sharpening system eliminates the mess of a wet system and delivers higher material removal rates without affecting the steel temper. Compare to sharpening systems that cost $100 more! Unique design allows for fast and easy reshaping of new or damaged
chisels and planes (up to 2" wide), and fast honing of a micro bevel. Bevel angles are adjustable and are set in the sharpening port (not in a fixture or jig) so switching between angles is simple and fast. With maintenance-free tempered glass grinding wheel.

I absolutely love this product. I was a little leery at first but I opened the package and within a few minutes I had put a razor sharp hone on a couple of chisels I had pretty much left for dead. Its nice to see a product that works exactly as advertised. The learning curve on this machine is very shallow and would recommend it to anyone, like myself, that is "sharpening challenged".

Another XMas present ... the XYL know how to pickem. Took the worst chisel I had (skewed, dull, knicked, etc.) and put it through the paces. In less then 10 mins I could shave the hair off a knat. Beats the old scary sharp method I've been using for years. The large blade attachment was a blessing for my wide plan blades ... worth the extra bucks. The large blade plate wouldn't align up to the wheel but the company sent me some washers immediately that took care of that problem. I found it difficult to take the knob off once the washers were in place, but found that if you grab the plate and pull it the same time you try to loosen the knob it becomes a no brainer. Now if they would make a knife sharpener attachment similar to the 2000 it would make it even better. The only problem I have now is everyone in the neighborhood want me to sharpen their planes and chisels. Great piece of gear!!!

I've only had this sharpner for two days and I have sharpened just about every tool I have to include several knives. I put a razer edge on all my knives and I can even shave with my chisels. I'm very impressed with this product and have recommended to several friends. I started out with a delta veraible speed grinder, but was not impressed with it at all. This system cost me about $60 more, but was well worth it. I showed my neighbor how sharp I was getting my tools and he brought over six or seven knives and a pair of sissers to sharpen. He was really impressed with the WS 3000. Thanks for providing me a great tool. If you could have a design that would enable you to sharpen router bits, that would be great. I have been doing wood carvings for about 38 years and this is the best sharpening system I have ever used.

Like many others, my "tried-n-true" methods of chisel sharpening were marginal at best. I didn't know just how meager my efforts were until after I purchased the Work Sharp 3000. The instructions are excellent. The materials are 1st class and the product delivers as stated. My so-so sharp chisels took on a mirror finish and I even added a micro-bevel just for grins!
The only thing I would add is a larger table to facilitate knife and scissor sharpening. Also, the leather hone seems to work ok..I'm still working with it. I'm not much of a block plane guy, but after sharpening my planes, I have a whole new outlook! Thanks again.

I have used the Work Sharp WS 3000 to sharpen two chisels that were so dull and nicked up that a miracle was required to get them back into working order. The miracle was the WS 3000. Easy to use and the results are wonderful. My chisels were never this sharp.
The only thing I would change with the WS 3000 is a longer ramp to make the chisels more stable while sharpening.

I have been looking for a way to sharpen my wood lathe tools. You would not believe how hard it is to find something that is easy and quick. I have used stones, grinders, and files with not much luck. this unit works. I also have sharpened my chisels and the edge looks better than new. they also work better than they did when I bought them. I sharpen my knives with a wet stone. it seams to work the best. but as far as my wood lathe, this is the ticket. I have been working with wood since i was in the 7th grade of school and I am 50 years old now. Trust me this is the item to buy if you are going to sharpen chisels or gouges. Be sure to get the see through plates. I have not had to purchase extra sharpening pads yet so I cant tell you how hard these will be to get. Most of the tools i have are Craftsman and I dont know if they sell them or I will have to order through Rockler. This item works.

I am relatively new to woodworking, etc. and have been struggling for several years to figure out a way of keeping my tools sharp. I have tried several different methods with varying degrees of success, but this one works!
My chisels were no longer square, but the WorkSharp has been getting them more and more square the more I sharpen them (they were pretty bad.). I have been able to sharpen other tools, such as knives, axes, etc. It is no longer a chore to sharpen things and when you get done they are sharp. I will grant you that doing knives is trickier than chisels and planes, but it is still very doable. The tool is well worth it.

This is a great addition to my shop. I can sharpen 5 chisels from a beat down point starting with 150 grit all the way to 4000 grit in about 5-7 minutes total. They come out super sharp and cut hairs on my arm. Its about 10x faster than using stones and way cleaner. The guide for the chisels sucks and it pretty worthless, but its not needed anyway and easier to use with it pushed all the way to the left. I just hold the chisels to the right and then I can switch chisel sizes without messing with it. It seems to have about 1/8" of play. It helps to clamp it down when you use it. I'd been using the drill doctor another one of their products for years and love that thing too!

The only danger with this device is to your fingertips. Be very careful when testing the sharpness if you use your fingers! I thought I had done well with a glass plate and silicon carbide sandpaper with my low angle block plane, but I was never satisfied. A few minutes with the WorkSharp convinced me that using the plate was only approximate and I had been missing really sharp tools. End grain is much easier now with my low angle block plane. I am going to need to order more of the coarse disks since I seem to be wearing them out fast on some tools that I hadn't worked on before. I agree with the reviewer who commented on how few of the coarse disks there are in the kit. I also bought the belt sharpening kit for this and it does a very good job on knives and scissors. Again, I used to think I had sharp knives but I was wrong! The honing leather does a great job putting a very fine edge on tools. I highly recommend it for that final step. The edge from the 3600 micro mesh isn't quite there.

I could hardly wait to try out this tool, as I had an older set of everyday use chisels in dire need of sharpening. The manual said that the Skew Cam was preset at the factory to be square with the wheel, which I took their word for (Yes I should have double checked).
Starting with the widest chisel, on the right side of the cam, It was obviously skewed on the right. Since the tools had never been machine sharpened, I chalked it up to the tools and ground them to the preset level.
I used the left side for the narrowest chisel and could see the Skew was much less. A simple try on the right showed the difference. Using an unsharpened 2" hand plane blade as a guide, I was able to correct the bevel.
Other than that, the Work Sharp works great and fast, and my chisels are so sharp, it's almost scary. I wish there was an attachment for knives and scissors.

The WS3000 is unique in the way it was designed. It preformed very well for Chisel sharpening, easy, quick, and requires little skill or effort. I rave found it performs well, with little preparation of clean up afterward. Unlike wet bases sharpeners, these is practically no mess to deal with. The sharpened chisels have a nice edge after sharpening, and came out "square" across the blade end. I would recommend this tool for chisels. I haven't yet tried it for any other sharpening task.

This is really the best system I have used for sharpening my tools up to this point. It delivers an excellent edge. The only drawback is when I have a tool that needs a new edge cut in, which most of my chisels and a couple of planes needed. It takes a while to get the old angles shaved off and restructured. But I really enjoy working with the WS3000, and I love using the newly-sharpened tools!

I've read all the wonderful reviews. Seems like a great product when it works. The motor froze solid on mine before I had a chance to sharpen anything. Rockler Customer Service was great. This is the second time I've been dispappointed by this manufacturer-their drill bit sharpener had a similar problem. I guess I'm on their list to be blessed with their lemons.
Rockler Customer Service was terrifically helpful and efficient handling the situation -- a great company to do business with.

The workshop 3000 does a supurb job in a reasonable time.
I have two criticisms.
First the manufacturer says the abrasive discs are readily available at home centers, hardware stores and auto paint supply stores. This just isn't the case.
Secondly, the disc supply sent with the machine could use some adjustment. I think I'm probably a good representative of the first time user of the workshop 3000. I had a box full of chisels and plane irons that had been hand sharpened for years. They needed quite a bit of shaping. The two 120 grit discs were used up pretty quickly, and more proved hard to find. Two more 120 s in the starter pack would be a good idea.
Other than that, I found it to be a great machine.
Editor's Note: replacement abrasive discs are available in this web offering.

I like the WS3000 because it does a fine job. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that Rockler's usually great shipping, 2 days, fell thru it took 8 days to get the Work Sharp. And be aware that if you order the 24974 - Fine Abrasive Kit it DOES NOT contain the 2-P80 disks.

I have used water stones and sandpaper to sharpen my chisels and plane irons until now. I never had particuarly good results with either. Although I did get the tools fairly sharp, I never did get the bevel just right and this was after hours of grinding away. I do not use my chisels and planes all that much, although I might now, so I could never justify buying one of the machines that cost several hundreds of dollars more than the Work Sharp 3000. When I saw the price of the WS 3000 and read all the testimonials I decided that this just might be the machine for me. I was not disappointed. I sharpened all my chisels and plane irons in about a hour. And these tools are sharp! I think that I could have done it quicker except that I had to grind a new bevel on most of my chisels. The purest at "Fine Woodworking" may be aghast but I think the tool is great. My hat is off to those people at Work Sharp that decided that a sharpening machine could be better and cheaper.

This is a great tool for anyone. For the first time ever I now have very sharp chisels and hand planning blades. I could never get a very sharp and straight edge on a chisel untill I got this WorkSharp 3000.

The WS 3000 is a shortcut to tool sharpening that has greatly upgraded my hand tools. I blend the docking features and free hand work to achieve different results for my chisels and plane blades. I would have liked to receive the wide blade attachment and the leather honing disc with my purchase of the unit as they are essentials, but the sticker shock would prevent a lot of buyers so I understand why they are secondary purchases. You will need the wide blade attachment, this is worthless for plane blades with out that.

It's true that you don't necessarily "need" this machine to sharpen tools, but for several tasks and when used carefully, it can really help save time. The build quality could be better, as this is intended as a stationary machine. I'd pay up to $300 for it if the disc didn't wobble, and if it were overall a step up in manufacturing tolerances, but it's not too bad really. If you want the cheaper, portable version the WS2000 is also available at a great price! Also the 400 grit abrasive should be more like 280 or so, and the 1000 could be about 600 instead. As the grit wears down it gets finer, so it makes sense to start a little coarser. I was not able to easily remove scratches in chisels left over from the 120 grit disc, because the 400 was too fine, and I don't think the micro mesh is a great solution because steel particles tend to "stick" in it's "gummy" surface and then scratch the blade again when the disc comes back around. I used some 3M 600 grit wet/dry sand paper glued with 3M artist's spray-mount, and it polished to a mirror finish a good quality knife blade better than the 3000 micro-mesh could, right from the 400 grit supplied. For gouges, get the felt pad too, and use the wonderful imitation Stephan machine see/through disc. I would recommend the WS3000 to anybody serious about sharpening their tools, but use it very lightly at first, and put some care into which abrasives work best for the tool. It is easy to waste abrasive and blade material on any machine.

For sharpening chisels and narrow, square edged plane blades this tool works as advertised. Chisels can be easily kept razor sharp. Don't have to pull out the waterstones and jigs and then clean up the mess. For cambered plane blades I'll still rely on the stones. I'd like to see some sort of clamp to attach to the tool rest to keep wider blades square and perhaps a barrel shaped piece that would allow blades to be rocked slightly for grinding a camber.

The "see through" system enables a clean and efficient method for handling woodcarving chisels and gouges resulting in the best honed tools I've ever used. Like others here I’ve tried them all (except the megabuck slow grinders), water stones, dry stones, scary sharp etc….
This unit is the best. It’s the last sharpening tool I’ll buy. It’s quick, easy and kinda fun to use. I grabbed the dullest chisel out of the draw and had it sharpened to shaving quality in about 15 minutes.
The only negative thing I’ve found is the adhesives on ultra fine Micro Mesh discs is way to strong. It stays on the glass disc basically ruining the disk.
All the others, 80-1000 grit aluminum oxide discs, have a light tack and can be removed and reused without ruining the disk.
I highly recommend this tool if you find sharpening a drudge.

Basically this is the next best thing since sliced bread. I have always found sharpening my chisels to be labor intensive and have had difficulty, even with a guide, getting them truly sharp. It made me really appreciate how nice it is to work with sharp tools when I mortised for some hinges after sharpening the chisels. It would be nice to see a knife attachment as well.

This is by far the easiest sharpener I have ever used! Set up is fast and easy, and the quality of the tool is excellent!

Excellent results. The see through system makes sharpening easy and accurate. Cannot be used to hone knife edges, since the motor rotates only one way, but it works great for gouges and chisels, plane blades, etc. Smooth running motor and nice flat glass wheels give very good results.

I used all four of the supplied grits and now have a "close to mirror" finish on the bevels. My chisels are sharper than they have ever been (I've tried scary-sharp and stones). Setup was easy, although I couldn't avoid bubbles in the micro mesh and had to cut them to flatten. Worked well on all chisels and free-hand knife sharpening. I tried free handing a wide plane blade and got it sharp, but couldn't keep it square.

I was able to sharpen chisels razor sharp with in 15 minutes of opening the box. It did a above average job sharpening pocket knives and other miscellaneous wood working tools. I did not have as much success with my lathe tools, but I think with some more practice my results will improve. Bottom line for $200 you get excellent results with chisels and good results from freehand straight edges and better than nothing results from gouges. I am glad that I bought this product.

I'm a self-taught yet still novice woodworker with a very complete shop and a lot of tools. I've built some pretty cool things. The thing that has always steepened my learning curve has been dull tools. I've read books and articles, bought sets of stones, and stuck sandpaper to glass, all with little success. I got the Work Sharp 3000, put it together, plugged it in and voila, sharp chisels and plane blades. I love it. I spent a day sharpening everything in sight. It's been life-changing. Sometimes I shy away from items like this because they seem somehow antithetical to the purity of woodworking. But, if it works and allows you do more and better, why not? But still, one day I hope to master the water stones.

Does what it does very well, but has limited applications. I had some trouble determining the initial bevel to use; in the future I will take measurements first. It would be really nice if there was some sort of bevel gauge integrated into the machine, even if it was just lines etched into the metal top on the left.
