This was my first Intarsia project. I found the plan and the photos very helpful as it was quite challenging to me. After reading one of the reviews regarding the size of the coin holders, I decided to use a very thin double sided sticky pad that is used in the making of lenses for glasses and fit them into the coin holes. I adjusted the depth to take this into account and gave the inserted coins a 1/32nd relief above the board. Also, I made a total of five boards for the coins to eventually accomodate 50 presidents. Hopefully my heirs will finish the project. Great fun and satisfaction.

Overall the Presidential Dollar Display plan by Judy Gayle Roberts is beautiful.
My only real complaint is that the plan is incorrect when it states 25 for the quantity of magnets, per Judy Roberts instructions you actually need 26. And you need 4 of the brass table pins, not 5 like the plan calls for.
I used walnut, red oak, aspen, yellow heart, cherry and birch dowels for the olives. I painted the shield, eagle head, tail feathers, and the toenails with acrylic paint (nice bright colors) and then sprayed 3 coats of satin lacquer to finish it off.

Judy Gale Roberts truly a artist in wood. This plan is a good buy because you get five copies. I recently did an eagle by Judy and loved it. This is worth the work and the instructions are simple enough.

I recently purchased the Presidential Dollar Display plan by Judy Gayle Roberts. The plans, including the full color booklet were very easy to follow and well thought out. Lot's of great photos.
My choice of woods and hanger for the coin box are slightly different that Ms. Roberts' plans - mainly because of availablility and accuracy of my tools. That being said, I received many rave reviews from customers at our last juried craft show in Franklin, NC.
I did find that the special forstner bit is a little too large for mint condition coins. Even with 4 coats of lacquer on the project, I still have to use double-backed tape to hold the coins in the holders. (I do not have this problem with the quarter sized bit).
My thanks to Al Wolford (who worked with me to obtain the pattern) and Ms. Roberts (a most talented designer) for this project. It was definitely worth the wait.

I got the plan in the mail it came with 5 copies more than enough to complete the job. It looked intimidating for my first intarsia but wasn't really that bad. I had it all cut out with just a couple of fun sessions in the shop. I went to the bank to get my coins and I guess now I will collect them all. GET THIS PLAN good feeling of 'I did it'.
