Added to Previous Review: Epoxy worked great to finish assembly. Mandrel a must. Proud of results.

Problem with instruction clarity. Drill hole just longer than the threaded connector. However, the threads on the mandrel are longer therefore needing a deeper hole. A little surprised that after using the mandrel I thought the stopper had the same thread ... just slips in. Think this is OK with generous epoxy and no air trap. Quality is good on product.

This bottle stopper hardware is very nice. Be sure to use a tail center for stability, and be very careful during rough turning in order to avoid breaking the mandrel loose in the spindle. It is also important to unscrew the spindle on the mandrel a couple of turns for sanding and finishing because the bushing on the mandrel covers part of the wood that will be exposed after final assembly.

These kits are very slick and fun to turn, and make a terrific change from doing pens all day. The special mandrel mounts in a drill chuck or a four-jaw bowl turning chuck (with the jaw faces removed), and I use a tailstock for the first part of the turning process for extra support. The stoppers fit air-tight in all sorts of wine and spirits bottles, and the chrome plated surface is chemically inert, so it won't cause any funky flavors. I've just found one problem with this hardware kit: the instructions call for a 6mm pilot hole in the wood blank, which is way too big -- the wood falls right off the mandrel! Just THROW AWAY THE INSTRUCTIONS AND DRILL A 3/16" OR SLIGHTLY LARGER PILOT HOLE, thread the wood onto the mandrel, and start making shavings! When you're done, unscrew the topper from the mandrel and thread it onto the hardware kit - PRESTO! you're done. Now you just have to make a half-empty bottle of wine to keep the thing in!
