When you have a working battery, this gauge works great. However, I find this thing eats batteries like crazy. I purchased an analog one with a dial and put this one away. Not everything is better in digital.

Love the product - will have many uses, beyond the obvious. Would have been great if there were instructions included. I received the gauge. The display continued blinking, when on. Finally went online and found instructions, that said if the display blinks, change the battery. The battery shipped in the gauge was insufficient. Fortunately, they shipped with an extra battery, which corrected the blinking issue.

When the gauge 1st arrived and I took it out of the box, it was on and would not turn off, zero or change display type from mm to inches. Because I had a similiar experience with a much cheaper digital gauge, I tried removing the battery for a few minutes. That worked, but display was flashing off and on. A few days later I was able to install a new battery, no further problems. The indicator arm seems a little tight on the upright bar, if I try to use a blade or router bit to raise the indicator, the base is not heavy enough to hold the entire unit from raising with the blade. Overall though I am pleased with this product, the accuracy is fantastic.

To come right to the point, how did I ever do without this amazing tool before? Setups are so much easier and faster and every cut is "right on the money". There's no "guestimating" and what you see is what you get. Why did I not get one of these sooner?

It is a great product if you know how to use, like everything else. I'm always happy when I receive something new and I learn how to properly use and its applications, this one was very easy, very affordable and good quality; Thanks Rockler.

I purchased this product to set depth on my router and rabbet cuts on my table saw and have found many other uses for it. One of which is set up of table saw fence. Set it against the fence on the feed side and zero then move to outfeed end of blade to check runout. Works perfectly. Love it and would definitely recommend anyone to purchase.

Being a bit of a perfectionist I like to work with precise measurements. This digital Height Gauge was perfect for making dado cuts using my router on a bookshelf project. I can see how well this will work on other future projects.

I recieved my Rockler digital height gauge a couple of weeks ago. I am a student of machine tool in a local collage and this is a welcome addition to my tool box. I used it many times already for checking the height of the parts that I make in class. I find it to be very acurrate and precise.

This height guage was very useful in setting a router bit to just a couple of thousands above the table. I had to remove the leg of some T moulding for a flooring transition and could only take a small bite at a time since the top surface of the moulding is convex. This had to be done to get the moulding between a door frame and over some floating laminate. To install the laminate I need the space where the T leg goes, so a spacer will be added between the laminate edges, then the moulding should slip right in and get screwed down.

I just received my Rockler digital height gauge and I have not had a chance to integrate it into my "poor man's" table-top mechanical 3D shape digitizer yet. This tool is going to make possible my "ridge-line" height measurement approach to 3D shape digitizing. It would have been VERY nice if this digital height gauge had a RS-232 serial output port so I could capture and record the height values in a formatted file on a PC. Still -- with voice-recognition software I will be able to record the hundreds of height values I will later convert to "radial" distances as part of cylindrical or polar coordinates for my geometric models of custom shoe lasts, duck decoy bodies, oversized wooden threaded shafts, etc..

Needed tweaking out of the box. The metal stock of the height adjustment is not machined perfectly flat. I just make sure I use the reference the same spot every time I use it.
All in all, this was an improvement from using a cheap tri-square or measuring stick to measure my height.
The precision that this tool offers is a good deal for the price, I stand by my purchace and I believe it would be a great asset in any shop.

I've had this since last year, and have used it quite often, and I occasionally find new, bizarre uses for it. These are used in the machining world quite often on granite surface tables to check things like flatness across a machined part, or to help set up tables of drill heights in stop-collared holders so bits can be changed immediately without having to dial in the heights in the CNC app.
I've used mine for setting table saw height for running narrow dados, router heights for dovetailing, rabbets, and grooving, checking the dimensions of planed lumber after each pass (battery died, so I couldn't use the planer's guide - but I got the pieces planed perfectly to thickness with this), checking the infeed-outfeed height difference on my jointer, checking trueness across my 13" planer by testing both sides of the planed lumber, and checking its snipe by checking along the lengths of planed lumber on both ends.
I've even used it to check hole depth by checking thickness of a piece of lumber, and height of a small peg, then the height of the peg sticking out of the hole. You can use the depth extension of a pair of calipers for this, but there are occasions where this is easier, like if you want to test different areas of a wide recess - you'll have nothing on which to rest the calipers, and if the edges are decorative, then you don't have a nice place over which to span a straight edge. It comes in handy in weird situations is what I'm saying :)
Works great, and is accurate every time, as it's essentially a specialized pair of digital calipers.

This will be a useful tool once I get the base flattened so that it sits flat and does not rock, the vertical standard adjusted so that the foot will touch the table top at zero, and install a new battery. I'm guessing that it needs a new battery because my display is flashing too. No instructions were included with my unit and I don't see any on the website. I bought it when it was on sale, so the price was right, but we should be able to expect a little better.

Am not happy with the flashing display - it should be constant. Also would like it to have the measurements on both sides of the vertical ruler and to be able to read the display from either left or right side of the blade.
Editor's note: A flashing display will be an indicator that the battery is weak and needs to be replaced.

I am beginning to believe I received a "lemon". With the lock-down screw completely loose and holding the base down to the table it is not possible to raise the saw blade into the tool for a continuous reading because the arm binds against the column. I even tried spraying silicon lubricant on the column, but it made no difference.

I got the digital heigth gauge today and started using it right away building some drawers. It really saves time not having to do so many test cuts and its very accurate. However I have the same issue Darrell Rogers, 11/17/08, has, the slider is too tight and binds so you can't raise the blade into it. I have to remove it from the table, set it up then raise the blade to meet it. Still it's better than using a ruler
and eye ball. The other thing is since the gauge is to the right of the arm, with a left tilt saw, if the fence is close to the blade, when you turn it around the display faces the rear of the saw. If someone has a fix for the tight fit of the sliding part of the gauge I would like to know.

This little gauge is a great value-priced alternative to other height gauges on the market. The LCD display is much easier to read than an etched analog scale. It uses the same quality rail and display used in Rockler's other digital calipers.

I believe the finger is off some on my tool also. By profession I have been a heavy duty engine mechanic most of my life and used dial indicators a lot and they will repeat zero a lot better than the tool I have here. I will have to examine it and see what I can do to help this problem, other than that it is an excellent tool.

It came with a dead battery out of the box, but there was another battery included with the packaging. The extra battery is very small and I did not even see it until 5 minutes after everything was out (so be careful of that.) Once I changed the battery it worked well. Mine had a flat base and it seems to be very accurate and repeatable. No instructions included, but I guess they were not needed. A good value since I got it on sale.

Like others the battery had to be replaced upon receiving and using the gauge for the first time.
Other than that the gauge is very well made and well worth the sell price I paid for it. It will serve me well I'm sure for a number of years.
I like this tool with the exception that I have to hold it down on the equipment table by hand then raise the cutter - a two handed operation which should only require one. Adding magnets to hold it to a cast iron table would be great improvement.

Like most other people, the battery was low when I received mine, so the display was flashing. Does anyone know if there is a way to make it turn off after a while. I have a bad habit of leaving digital devices on and burning the battery. Anyone know who actually makes it and if there is additional information available, like a manual. What is the connector on top for? Overall the device functions well.

The product will be an asset to my shop knowing that I can get the same accurate setup every time. Like other reviewers, the installed battery is done - why bother to put it in? Had I not read the reviews, I would have not known what the problem was. Instructions would be nice. Also I had to make myself a conversion table from inches to decimals since all the woodworkers I know work in inches. A conversion chart your customers could keep in their shops would be a nice touch. Otherwise I love it.

Nicely weighted, great accuracy and repeatability. There is one adjustment necessary. I use this for setting blade and router bit heights. For that you want a flat surface to register against and that little finger is slightly angled (Just right for a machinist measuring the height of a flat surface though). This angle hinders accurate measurement but can be almost, but not quite adjusted out (.003" off on mine) by canting the rule in its base.
