1) Submitted by Michael Sandman, from Brookline, MA on 5/2/2008 Customer Rating: This is Jet’s newest cabinet saw. It’s one step below the Powermatic 2000 from the same parent firm. Both have a riving knife and a brilliantly designed, easy to use guard rather than the usual clumsy one-piece splitter/guard that begs not to be used. The Jet comes on a pallet and weighs about 400 lbs. The cabinet is bolted to the pallet. Get delivery from a lift gate truck, or load it on a pickup and rent an appliance dolly (the type with straps) to get it safely off the tailgate. We did that, and to lighten it we removed the accessories and took off the table, which weighs maybe 80 lbs. (If you do that, leave the Styrofoam support for the motor to brace it against the inevitable jarring and watch for brass shims under the table and note which corner they come from. They look like thin brass washers. My saw had two and they were needed to level the table when it was reinstalled. And take the time to align the miter slot to the saw blade very precisely.) This is a 220 volt tool. You’ll need at least a 20 amp 220 circuit for the 14.5 amp 3 HP motor. Jet doesn’t include a pigtail for connection to a 220 line, but the saw has a standard 3-wire connection block. The saw uses metric fasteners, so you need 12 mm and 17 mm sockets and 3 mm and 6 mm hex wrenches to set it up. I needed to adjust the 90 and 45 degree stops for the tilt mechanism. They’re accessible, although it’s not easy to get at the 45 degree stop. The cabinet doesn’t come with adjustable feet, which seems very strange. (Is everyone’s floor supposed to be dead level?) The table sits only 34” high. There’s no way to thread adjustable feet into the bottom of the cabinet, since it has only two holes, tapped for the 12 mm that hold it to the shipping pallet. I built a platform with adjustable feet and set it level to the 36” tables elsewhere in the workshop. The manual is clear and well illustrated. The cast iron table and extensions aligned perfectly flat horizontally without any shims, and the tilt and elevation mechanism are solid and smooth. The easily removable blade guard and splitter/riving knife are very well designed, although you should check alignment of the riving knife when you first set up, and if you change saw blade types. The miter gauge is the bare minimum – the sort of thing you get with a much less expensive saw. There’s a 4” outlet at the back that’s easily attached to a dust collector and the design works well with a 1-1/2 HP dusts collector. The power switch has a magnetic relay so it shuts off if the current dips or goes down (which happens often in rural NH, where my workshop is.) That prevents it from starting up again inadvertently when the power comes back on. But the switch lacks a removable key or a magnetic disc, so it can’t be disabled to keep it from being started by the nearest six year old. The switch also needs to be pushed with a finger to shut the saw off rather than having a paddle-like stop that can be pushed with a thigh. It’s not hard to make an add-on paddle stop, but those are strange omissions for a saw whose big selling point vs. similar cabinet saws is safety -- the safer anti-kickback advantage of a riving knife. Once you start cutting, the quality is obvious – adjustments feel solid, things align perfectly, and there’s no vibration. The 3 HP motor sliced through 3” of fir with absolutely no hesitation and it feels much more capable than the one on my old Delta contractor’s saw. I have an after-market fence (an Incra) so I can’t vouch for the included Jet Xacta fence, but it’s heavy and it looks solid. The Jet Deluxe Xacta is not quite a Powermatic 2000. And there are a couple of things missing from the Jet that shouldn’t be – levelers and a removable key for the switch. It's hundreds less expensive than a Powermatic. It’s a solid modern cabinet saw, and it’s a good value.
