As far as I’m concerned, there is really only one book that covers everything the woodworker really needs to know about sharpening, and this book is it. Most authors dutifully recite the methods used to grind a tool to a pointy edge and simply leave it at that. Mr. Lee, a woodworker and tool maker with a firm background in the engineering aspects of the craft, covers the essential questions that other authors fail to even consider, such as just what exactly is meant when we say that something is “sharp?” He also covers a smattering of metallurgy and goes in depth into how different abrasives cut into the metal, both of which are important to understanding how to shape a metal tool to a keen edge that will glide effortlessly through the wood. Through the rest of the book, he covers the details of sharpening every tool from axes to Yankee drill bits, including such unlikely tools as screwdrivers and tweezers.
