These pads are great for knocking down raised grain before the first coat of finish, and for removing “nubbies” between coats. Because they’re synthetic, they’re perfect for water-based finishes where steel wool would cause rust problems. Non-woven technology means they won’t shed abrasive crumbs onto the finish. Best of all, they’re completely washable; just rinse them out under a tap to renew the abrasive qualities. Large 6" x 9" pads make quick work of broad flat surfaces. Available in three color-coded grades. 93451 is comparable to #2 Steel Wool. 93469 is comparable to #0 Steel Wool and 93477 is comparable to #000 Steel Wool.

I use the grey pads to take the gloss off of padded shellac prior to hand waxing a piece. The abrasive level is well suited to the task.

These work as they're expected to. I bought a pack of the maroon pads because (1) I needed some and (2) I didn't know how many you get in a pack. The answer to the second part is 3. They're shipped wrapped with a strip of shipping cellophane about 2" wide, so the edges are pretty squashed down when you receive them. Take them out and leave them on the bench for a couple of days and they'll re-inflate.
Also, they left a lot of loose grit crumbs on my bench when I picked them up after they re-inflated. You should give them a good rinsing or vacuuming before you use them, especially if you bought different grits because you don't want to get the coarser grit crumbs in your finer grit pads.

I've used sand paper, sanding pads and steel wool in the past for all my furniture finishing. After using all 3 grits of these pads in a recent shop test, My prior finishing methods are history. Best of all, I've eliminated the rubbing lubricants. The pads are second to none! My test was gluing up stock to make(2)18x32 inch test pieces. One in cherry and one in maple. Both had a routed cove edging and were machine & hand-sanded and oil stained, with no shortcuts, including drying time on the stain. Using a "name brand" waterbased Poly finish, I used a brush on the maple and an HVLP sprayer on the cherry. I diluted sprayed product only (10% water/qt.-15 sec. result with viscosity cup). Three coats of poly were used on each. I scuffed each first coat with the maroon and the second coat with the gray. There were no "over-scuffing" the edge problems and leveling was a dream using both application methods. The white pad was used for applying a "thin" coat of paste wax. The white pad was dual purpose - a final rub and wax application all in one process. After 20 minutes, both were buffed to an unbelievable satin finish!
