Scratch Awl Kit

This kit provides quality hardware for a unique, long-lasting scratch awl. You’ll get a stainless steel pointed shaft (4-1/2" exposed), polished brass front and end caps, threaded couplings, and an inner tube. Requires blank from 1-1/2" to 2" wide x 3" long.

Every woodworker needs a good scratch awl to replace that knife blade we use for this purpose. The kit is easy to build and assemble. I used a touch of medium viscosity CA glue to hold the brass screw fittings on the tube and press fit them in the vise to get a perfectly square and solid fitting before assembly. I purchased 2 of the kits & after seeing a photo of a Shaker awl that I liked in a book. I made one awl of Cherry & one of Black Walnut & chose to turn the wood handles with a Shaker influence. The instructions were easy to follow & the kit was easy to modify a bit to suit my design as seen on the Black Walnut awl. I especially like the feel of "heft" that the brass fittings give to the awls. When finished, these awls have the look & feel of high dollar tool. Other kits from other sites offering awls had no bushing or instructions. I accomplished one out of four awl kits and it looks great.
