Looking to build a Pop-Up Sudoku Box? Click here for a free plan download!
Paper-and-pencil puzzles are no match for the deluxe boards you’ll craft
with this kit. A wooden Sudoku set makes a great addition to any parlor game
collection or living room, and this is the simplest and most accurate way to
make one. With the included acrylic template and self-centering drill bit,
you’ll bore accurate peg holes in seconds. Notches in the template help lay
out the necessary rows, columns, and 3 x 3 boxes. And with a large playing
surface (nearly 10" x 10"), the finished board is perfect for both individual
and group solving. Plus, the package comes with complete, easy-to-follow
instructions and a sample peg with a stick-on number and a fixed-number
indicator ring. For the complete 81-piece set-up, try our Sudoku Peg Set.
Perfectly sized board blanks (sold separately) are also available in Walnut,
Cherry, and Mahogony. They are lumber core plywood, with same-species
veneer on both faces.
Sudoku is a popular number puzzle consisting of a 9 x 9 grid divided into
rows, columns, and 3 x 3 boxes. Each puzzle begins with a few numbers
already in place, with the object of the game being to fill in the remaining
spaces so that each row, column and 3 x 3 box contains every number from
1-9.
While Sudoku is generally played with a pen or pencil on a printed grid, our
new Template and Bit—along with numbered pegs—brings
the game’s playfully addictive brand of fun to a reuseable, refined, and
group-friendly format. Use almost any puzzle book as a guide to set up
the board and start solving!
- For best results, use a V-groove router bit (90869) and router table
to create grid-lines.
- Template dimensions: 9-5/16" x 9-5/16"

My wife is an avid Sudoku player and as a Woodturner I just couldn't bring myself to make a square board so you can see what I came up with. I used your Peg kit and template. It all worked well and my wife loves it.

Made 2 of these sets to give as gifts to my daughters. Plans were very easy to follow (I am new to wordworking). As I don't have all the toys(tools) I need yet, the template was an extreme help. Instead of the v-groove bit, I used my table saw set at 1/8" height for the 3x3 outline and lowered the blade to 1/16" for the other lines. I then hand painted with gloss black paint the outline for the 3x3 grids. This made a great contrast to the stain.
The only suggestion that I make is that the downloaded plans tell you that you will need the 3/4" blank for the gameboard (caused another trip to the lumber yard).

I found the plans easy to follow and the template and self-centering bit a joy to use. I chose to finish the pegs clear to contrast with the Brazilian walnut board and box. I used Sam Maloof's poly finish on all the entire project and the grain and color stands out nicely.
One suggestion is to use a 1/8" shim under the push latches to mount them in order to raise the game board slightly higher for ease of extraction.

I bought the pegs only and found they fit perfectly into holes drilled with a 1/4" Forstner bit. Prior to adding the numbers, I had feared they would prove to be a problem, but I no trouble getting them into proper position and pressing them down. I made the board as a gift for my wife, and as soon as she saw it, she listed other family members and friends who would also enjoy receiving the board and pegs. That means I'll be back for more peg sets.

I gave this as a present also using the template and bit. Both worked very well. I used a couple of small bar clamps as the tape method didn't work. I tried using a piece of plywood as a practice piece but running the board over the v bit in some directions the wood would get too fuzzy and would have made more work sanding those tiny grooves. Instead I used the sure foot aluminum bar clamp and some solid cherry glued up to make the blank. Both worked great.

I bought the template and the pegs. Both are outstanding. The template was heavier than I expected and I found the pegs ready to finish. I stained them Golden Oak and put a couple coats of wax on them. The color was just what I needed to match the solid cherry board I had left from another project. I also put deeper sides on my board and used a piece of white peg board dadoed in to make a storage drawer for the pegs. It looks and works great. I made it as a gift for my wife.

Purchased sudoku peg set only. Works great with a 1/4" brad point bit. Love the number markers and how well they fit. Rubber o-rings are also great to mark initial set of numbers. Was a gift for my father-in-law, but will have to make one for myself now.
