A new standard for palm-grip sanders! This low-profile tool’s revolutionary 3.5 Amp EnduraTech brushless motor boosts performance in every major aspect of operation; and with 71% fewer wearable parts, it’ll last 5-10x longer than traditional motors. An Electronic Load Control feature monitors the rpm and makes automatic adjustments that maintain a constant operating speed for smooth sanding and 42% faster material removal. The 390K saves time with an innovative electronic motor brake, as well, which reduces spin-down waiting by 73%. A separate mechanical pad brake reduces free-spin—effectively putting an end to gouging—while a compact design brings the sander’s height down by 31% over previous models for superior control and finish. Includes sander with 5" hook and loop pad with 8 hole pattern, a storage case, and a user manual.
Additional features:
- Integral dust port with concentric fittings to accept both 1" and 1-1/2" hose.
- Optimized ergonomics with rubber grip for comfort and control
Specifications:
- 7, 000 - 12, 000 Orbits/min
- 4" tall
- 8 hole pattern

Low profile gives you excellent control. Low vibration, brake works like a charm, decent dust collection with default filter, excellent with a shopvac hooked up to the dust port. Hook and look is quick and easy. On/off switch in good position. Long cord. Nice box with paper storage and molded insert that keeps the sander from flopping around inside the case. Buy it. I got mine on sale, but its worth every bit of its current price.

I like the low profile and powerfull motor.
It sands well and has a quality feel.
The dust collector is a big improvment for my last Porter Cable orbital sander. This is my 4th sander, and my last Porter Cable lasted much longer that my Dewalt and Milwaukee.

This is a fantastic sander. I have been a woodworker and carpenter for 50 years and this is the absolute best random orbit sander for me. No vibration, no drifting, very little dust dust, no sander marks. You won't go wrong with this tool.

The Porter-Cable 390K 5” variable speed low profile Random Orbital Sander is a quality tool that delivers great performance.
The low profile makes this sander much easier to control than other, taller sanders. The motor used is a constant response motor, which keeps it from bogging down regardless of the amount of pressure you put on it. The 390K is the most aggressive sander I own (I also have sanders from Milwaukee, B&D, and Craftsman) in terms of the material it will remove, yet it has the least amount of vibration, and is the easiest to control. When compared to my other sanders using the same grit, scratching left by the 390K is negligible and almost undetectable.
And when turn it off, there is no ‘spin-down time’ waiting for it to stop, which speeds up disc or workpiece changes.
I have never used it with Shop Vac or dust collector, and have always found the built-in dust collection to be quite adequate (caveat: I do about 90% of my sanding outside).
The 390K is not cheap, but a wise man once told me “If you buy a quality tool, you may cry the day you pay for it, but if you buy a cheap tool, you will cry every time you use it”.

I have used a Porter Cable Profile sander for more than 10 years. I also have a palm sander but neither sander were adequate for tasks like sanding stained wood down to the bare wood. A friend lent me his Orbit sander which did the job so I decided to buy one for myself. I chose Porter Cable because of my prior favorable experience with Porter Cable products. I also have a Porter Cable nailer.

I really enjoy the palm sander, I had a Porter-Cable for 13 years and it finally gave up. The new sander is easy on the hands, the brake stop is great, but the angle of the dust nozzle pointing towards the power cord is awkard. If they could make a rotating nozzle or point it towards one side it would be great. Still I enjoy the sander and us it about 4 hours a day.

This sander has plenty of power to quickly remove material, and the orbiting speed high enough to leave an extremely smooth surface. This unit does not bog down, even using 60 grit discs.
But is is heavy, and the grip is fairly large compared to other Porter Cable and DeWalt models, making it tiring to use on anything but horizontal surfaces. A little softer rubber on the grip would have been nice. The cord is nice and long and the variable speed control has a wider range than my DeWalt.
The first one I purchased had a bent motor shaft, causing the sander to take off like a race horse as soon at it touched the wood. The second one has run very smooth and is reasonably quiet considering how hard it can work.
Dollar for dollar, I think the DeWalt variable speed model is a better buy. They last about three years for me. We'll just have to see how the Porter Cable holds up.
