How many hinges do
you
need?
Use our Torsion Calculator or the formula below to help
determine your optimal configuration.
(lid depth (Fig. 1) x lid weight in pounds) ÷ 2 =
Inch-lbs. of support
For best results, choose a combination of hinges that provides as
close to your lid's required support as possible (eg. if the formula returned
125 you would use two 60 inch-pound hinges). Hinges are available in 15, 30, 40,
and
60 inch-pound ratings.
Note: If three or more hinges are required, the
support-capacity of the outside hinges must be the same. Also, the hinge
configuration should
be symmetrical.
Installation
instructions
- Step 1: Attach hinge to lid with 3/4" screws (included). For the
lid
to be flush with the back of the box, the top of the hinge should be 1-
9/16" from the back edge of the lid. To create an overlay, increase
the
1-9/16" dimension by the desired amount of overhang.
Note: Our Lid-Stay Torsion Hinge JIG IT® (23625)
lets
you to attach the hinge to the lid in seconds, and requires no measuring.
Works great for both flush and overlay applications. Fig.
2.
- Step 2: With all hinges attached to the lid, position the lid on the back of
the box. Complete the installation using 1" and 3/4" screws as
shown in the illustration. Fig. 3.

Customer Rating:
I built a blanket chest for my daughter and it was made out of 3/4 stock so the lid weighs 14.75 pounds. This could make for very sore fingers it it closed uncontrolled. The online calculator said I would need a 40 pound hinge and two 60 pound hinges. I am totally satisfied with the way the lid stays in any position and will not under any circumstances fall and trap small fingers

Two 60# and one 40# hinge in the middle support a 48" x 22" lid of 3/4" plywood quite well on a large toy chest made for my five year old grand-daughter's stuffed animals!Lid is easy for her to open and close and stays fixed in any position.

I built a window seat and wanted some hinges that wouldn't be visible and would also allow the lid to stay open without a catch or having to hold it. I got two 40-lb hinges and they work perfectly. Definitely would suggest these to anybody.

Hinge is GREAT, but the supplied screws are disappointing. Too soft as the heads can break off very easily.

Great product for a safe, toy box lid. It does what it is supposed to do, similar to a laptop lid. I did have to reorder one heavier hinge, as I under estimated the lid weight with upolstery and padding included. The ordering process was very easy and was received quickly with regular shipping.

These hinges are excellent quality and do their job nicely. Very good quality and I like not having to have a separate lid support.
Online calculator seems to over-estimate requirements a bit. While nice where fingers are concerned toy chests - keep this in mind, especially when your project doesn't have the mass to counteract the strength of the hinges when lifting. I had to use about half the recommendation for my piano bench.
I was able to install these just fine without the jig, but I can see where the jig would be nice if installing several hinges. I had no problem with the screws in solid oak, just made sure to pre-drill properly and used beeswax to lubricate the threads.
Would like to see additional finishes and a cheaper price. Will be keeping my eye out for sales on these.
