For years, dovetails have been a classic choice for joining medium and larger sized panels - this kit finally makes them an option for small-box projects as well! Create gorgeous 1/4" through dovetails with tight 1/2" or 5/8" spacing (on center) in stock ranging from 1/4" to just 1/8" thick. The set includes a template, two miniature 1/8" shank router bits, a reducer to adapt your router, and a template guide.

Instructions are a bit cryptic and difficult to follow.
1/8 in. dovetail bit broke off in middle of shank while dovetailing soft pine. This while exerting little force on router. Expensive to replace, considering it will have to be replaced often.

Save your money..two broken bits [with 1/8th "white oak] going extremely slow & careful, you have to cobble on a 1/2" shim and be familar with the jig to even figure out how to adjust it. For every other size this jig is the easiest and BEST I've used..limited to about 10" but I love it!

I am a jewlery box builder and I purchased the mini jig setup to make the trays. When it works it's great. It makes nice fitting dovetails.The problem is that the bits are too short to go completly into collet so they creep out when under load, break and destroy the piece. Rockler has replaced the broken bits but the down time is killing me. Please make the bits longer and I suspect you will have a good product. Loyal customer.

The first box I made using the small dovetail cutter was better than I expected. The dovetail cutter chattered, no matter how slowly I cut. The chatter was from the dovetail bit flexing. The next box, I used the straight cutter first on the dovetail tails and then the dovetail bit, which made the cutting easier and quicker. I am very satisfied with the system. I did break the straight cutter, but I did not have it in the router properly.

Mechanically the template works fine. But I was disappointed that the embossed icons on the metal were hardly visible. The template had to be moved around to just the right angle of light reflection so the icons would be visible. It's a real inconvenience when the template is installed in the jig, to have to remove it to see which side creates which dovetail set.

Editor's clarification: Template is phenolic rather than metal as reviewer notes. Printing on template is laser engraved etching of the phenolic surface. Viewing printing to select a side would be done before installing in jig rather than after. And of course, good shop lighting is always important.
