Templates are made of 1/2’’ MDF material. Instructions are permanently affixed to the template. We suggest using our 1/2’’ Pattern Cutting Bit #33536 (sold separately, but other 1/2’’ pattern bits also work. For best results, mount the template to the desired location of the router plate installation using double-face tape (sold separately).

Optional Router Plate Leveling and Locking Hardware Pack sold separately. Includes (2) 1/4'' - 20 Threaded Inserts and (8) Plate Leveling screws to level and lock plates to router tables.

I was setting up two 2 workstations at a local Boy Scout Camp and the template with the inserts made it easy to install in existing workbenches.

Like others, I also purchased Rockler hardware in order to build my own router table. With material I have on hand plus Rocklers hardware I can build a nice router table at half the cost, or more, of a factory built table.

In building my own router table I was concerned on the cut out for the router plate. I ordered a Rockler plate and the template and it worked great.

I'm building my own router table and came across this template. I read the reviews and was kind of leary about purchasing it, but thought I'd take a chance. To my delight, it worked perfect and the router plate fit snug. I don't know why it got 2 bad reviews.

I bought this product a while ago along with the aluminum router plate.
While the router plate is excellent, this template is not.
I was expecting a very snug fit, but when I took the router plate and dropped it in the template for a quick check, there was more than 1/16th inch play on BOTH sides. Since I wanted a very snug fit (isn't it why we buy that thing anyway?) I had to line the inside of the template with multiple layers of masking tape to get it right.
I bought the template to save time but it ended up costing me more that what it's worth.

No instructions. I have not used the part as of yet but it looks to be fine.

I also found the template to be 1/16th too big all around. I used double-sided tape and one layer of cut-to-fit poster board to compensate, but it's still a bit too loose for me. I tried two layers of poster board on two test pieces, but that was too snug. I'm seriously thinking of using some sort of filler to close the remaining tiny gap.

I read previous reviews about a "loose plate fit" but purchased both the template and Rockler suggested flush router bit anyway. After very carefully using the template with the bit on a scrap piece of plywood, I, too, found the resulting "cut out" to be about 1/16th too big. I'll try other bits with collars, etc to try and tighten up the fit. I do have several other Rockler jigs that I'm very happy with and will continue to try new ones as they come out.

This template is too big. You can make your own like I did and it will fit. This is a waste of time, wood and money!

I needed to replace the table faceplate on the table I purchased a few years ago. The original faceplate was no longer available and they sent me the larger faceplate. But that is another story…
After receiving the template, I too slipped the faceplate into the template and found it to be about 1/16" to big on both sides. In all fairness…. The original faceplate is almost 1/16" smaller than the original table opening as well.
Taking advantage of a previous entry, I lined the inner edges of the template with a few layers of masking tape, used the original faceplate to outline then cut an opening in a scrap piece of melamine, positioned the template over the scrap and used that to route, tweak and adjust the layers of masking tape to attain a tight fit for the new faceplate. It cost me close to an hour to get the fit I wanted.
After aligning the template to the opening in the table… and a couple of passes with a router later, the faceplate fit better than the original.
If the template was correctly sized to the faceplate I would give it 5 stars. As it is, it requires additional work to get a great fit, but it is an excellent starting point to work from.

My solution to the 1/16 gap in the template. I bought some 3/4 birch edge banding glued it in place on the inside of the template. In the corners i used a wood burning iron to melt the glue and a 1/2 inch dowel to seat the banding. trim flush with a razor blade and some light sanding with 100 grit paper and presto, a perfect fit. it took me about 45 minutes not you too will have a perfect fitting router plate.

I checked the template and discovered that the template was not snug to the plate. I used 3 rows of masking tape on the inside of the template, checked it against the router plate and then cut a trial cutout in an extra piece of material. The template was still approx 1/32 too loose. one more interior wrap, cut the template out and the router plate needs to be tapped into the cutout with zero tolerance of movement in any direction. While not perfect out of the box it did provide a great starting point.

My template was loose also and I tried the masking tape trick on the inside but found it time consuming and it did not stick well to the MDF when I tried a test cut. I solved the problem by cutting a narrow strip of masking tape and winding it around the guide bearing. It took four turns to get it exact and worked great, much simpler.

I purchased this product & a router lifter. I built my own router top and wanted to be assured it would fit properly. I read the post that the template would result in a loose fitting router plate but thought I could remedy this the same way stated previously. Not so! The router lift corner radius was not the same as the template & it took several attempts with drum sanders in the drill press to make the template close. End result poor product.
