Picked one of these up today. I had read all the reviews beforehand and figured it was worth a go for the price. I spent some time polishing the wheel, but nothing extreme. I did find that the brass bushing was about .006 over the wheel giving it too much end play for my taste, so I lapped it down to about .0015 over the wheel and it is smooth as silk now. Sure, I had to do a little work on it out of the package, but far less time spent on it then on a premium chisel out of the box. It marks well, is easy to use and I like the heavy, solid feel of it. I think this tool will be with me for some time.

Very good, especially for price on sale.
Rod and marking wheel need lapping and buffing to minimize play. Wheel needs sharpening. Bronze bushing should be cut down to match thickness of marking wheel. All above took about half hour of my time.
Bronze head sits too loose on the rod. It makes setting a liitle bit more complicated than I wish. Marking gauge should be broken down to at least 1/16th.

At the current low price this is a great value. I wasn't sure if I'd like this style of gauge, so I was reluctent to spend a lot of cash on a guess. After playing around with this tool for a few days now, I've come to really like it. Definitely better than a pin guage. The 1/8th graduations don't bother me. Using the existing scale marks as a reference, eyeballing 16ths isn't too hard. You can also convert inches to millimeters and use the metric side if you really wanted to.

This tool is well constructed and should last a lifetime. I bought it because it will transfer a line to my project more consistently than a pin type layout tool will.
