Bought this set as an addition to one I have that does 10-24 down to watch maker size. This set is well made and does practical sizes. The fact that they are all wired together makes it awkward but also helps prevent loosing individual sizes. I would definitley buy this again and recommend it to others.

Technically, I am giving this product a 4+ rating. I bought the Thread Detective and immediately sized about 1000 nuts and bolts. It worked fine with one exception: the stud part of the 1/4-20 had a tendency to come loose and 'unscrew' from the ball. This initially happened when the 'detective' found a metric nut and it bit into the stud's threads. This is the only reason for a 4+ rating instead of a full 5. A drop of glue or epoxy should solve the problem. Would easily recommend this product.

A good & useful addition to my tool chest. I ordered the metric one for use on motorcycles. Fast shipping was appreciated.

Well made product. I should have gotten this years ago. If you don't carefully read the dscription while placing an order, you might think you get both metric and SAE for one price because of the picture. The molded plastic body is a little bulky and prevents using the female side on a stud in tight places. So I keep a wire unlatchable key ring attached to it with a nut of each size.

Fast shipping, secure packaging, quality product. Picture shows both the the red and black versionsmetric and SAE which doesn't match the description. It is possible to assume you are getting both as I did. Picture should be corrected to reflect description.

I bought three sets of these English and Metric and gave two sets out as stocking stuffers. I used mine immediately. I was putting up a light fixture and needed a longer screw. Who would have thought that it was an 8mm. What a great tool.

If, like me, you have a shop full of various screws and netw, this tool will make your time in the shop a lot easier and better. You will be able to find out everything you need to know about what's in those cans and plastic containers. Well, at least what nuts and bolts you have.

Everytime I do job I pull out extra screws and nuts to make sure I have enough. Well all those extras end up in a can to be sorted later which never comes around. But with the thread detective it is much easier to sort through the misc nuts and bolts. So now the can is empty and all is in harmony.

This is a product that I could have put to good use for the last 50 years. I purchased one for a friend of mine also who is retired now, but used to build racing engines. He said the Thread Detective Screw Guages both standard & metric could have saved him a lot of trouble in the past and is very pleased to finally have one now.

I bought both sets as I have taken up working on old cast iron power equipment lately. I also think it would be useful to be able to remove the gauges from the wire. Also, I think they should have used coated steel wire. Easy enough to replace the wire with a swag tool. I also had some plastic residue around the female threads. I think the biggest drawback is that I think that there should be a wider range of thread sizes included. Overall, not impressed but at the same time, not disappointed.

The Thread Detective Screw Gauge is an excellent product. I have start to sort thourgh my container of miscellaneous nuts and bolt so I can put them in there proper places! Great way to save a little time and money by sorting out the unknown nuts and bolts.

I cannot believe how much I use both the Metric and English model of the Thread Detective Screw Guage. Now I can make a exact shopping list of the hardware I need, rather than bring pieces in a home improvement store and rummaging through the tiny bags of hardware to match up a guess on what might fit and end up buying and ultimately returning or stock piling more.
I have used to measure hardware to maintain my wood shop equipment and add small enhancements. Just today I measured a test router bit grove I intend to use on a sled jig I am working on to see what size of adjustment screws I will need. First I did it with a ruler to guess at the size and then used this tool, and am really glad I did! It prevented me from having to procure two sets of hardware, with only one set fitting.

In my opinion they are really well made, the wire they are on more than makes up for the hassle of not loosing any if they were to separate. I wish the markings were a little larger and perhaps molded in as I am afraid they may eventually wear off.

I bought a set of these after they were advertised I believe around Christmas of 09'. I figured if I ever needed them, they would be there. I went to change the brakes on my four wheel drive, and the manual said to use a screw to back out the brake drum. I could see the hole, but had no idea what size it was. I took out the metric gauge set (I have both ) and found it straight away. Great product. The frustration that one event saved me is well worth the cost, which is not much considering what they are. Thanks Rockler.

Now that I've owned both the SAE & metric sets for nearly three months, I've discovered one (only) drawback to these gems... Using the gauges' individual male bolts is VERY cumbersome in that it is difficult to rotate an individual male bolt with all the other gauges still attached. If only there was some way to separate individual gauges when you need to. Now don't get me wrong - I still think these are great products and I still recommend them highly.

I had the standard thread guage tool and found it cumbersome. These make sizing an unknown screw or bolt a snap. I've got them hung in an easy access postition in my shop as they will get frequent use.

I have both sets. Well made, heavy duty - doesn't feel like it will break in your hands with heavy use. Great if used as pictured on the website - you have a nut or bolt and you can place it in the thread checker. Not very good if you have to take the gauge to the part being checked. If you need to determine the thread of a part that is mounted in a piece of equipment, it is very difficult to use this gauge because they are all linked together with no way to separate them other than to cut the wire cable. Impossible to turn in tight quarters.

This is a very ingenious product, very well made and just a nice heavy duty product. I have it on the wall next to my nut & bolt bin so when I need something I can easily check it out and find the right size and thread by matching up a nut or bolt I already have. Sure beats using one of those cheap plastic things with holes and stubs on it and then wasting time getting out a thread gauge tool. Very simple to use so just buy it you won't regret it!

SAE products are very familiar but metrics are difficult to size accurately, this tool set will make identifying metric threads straight forward, great tool.

This product is very good, but needs additional thread sizes in both the metric and standard guages to make it an excellent product. For example there are no size 5 or 12 gauges.

These are the most useful tools for sizing screws and nuts. My son has coined them "Dad's screwballs." I keep them close at hand. I had the same problems with the cable attachment as some other reviewers. What worked for me was to detach and mount the "screwballs" on a piece of plywood, marking the sizes by each ball on each side. Check screws on the top side, flip it over to size a nut. I glued down the screw length card on one edge. The metric and inch sets and the card fit on a 12"x6"x1/4" ply. Great product, highly recommended.

I agree with everyone that the unit is quite nice to have. I have both the SAE and Metric sets. But as was posted by Rory Freeman, I have to agree that the unit is cumbersome if you have to screw the bolt side into a nut that is not held in your hand. Even is it is held in you hand, it is still cumbersome. I would have preferred a detachable end so that the individual balls could be removed, and used. I will probably do this in the future and attach some kind of link to close the wire loop when stored.
The bottom line is, it's great to have both sets while working in the shop.

Only one flaw in design. The smaller female threads have a wad of black plastic that obstructs the passage of the male bolt. Difficult to clear out. Any suggestions?

I've read the reviews, here, and even though I don't own the 'thread detective' product, I wonder if cutting the cable and seperating the balls would work better for everyone if there was a flat, rectangular shaped storage 'block' with holes or posts for each piece/ball. One block should, logically, be made of red colored glass-reinforced nylon same material that Kreg screw pocket jigs are made ofand the other one black. They would have to fit in a mechanic's tool box drawer and each hole or post labeled in raised numbers that are top-painted in a contrasting color, uh, like, white! On the other hand, all you woodworkers out there, should be able to make such a device in a jiffy using a drill press, a forstner bit and a 3/4 thick piece of MDF, Maple, Oak, etc.... depending on how much eye appeal you want the end product to have.

Excellent product : Each size consists of both a female thread, or nut! and a male thread, or screw! set into or protruding from, a corresponding spherical plastic holder! i.e., each at once both a nut-ball and screw-ball rolled into one .

Having read the reviews I purchased both sets, English & Metric, knowing they works best on loose parts. They have been instrumental in me being able to reorganize my lifelong collection of previously "miscellaneous" nuts and bolts into a hardware store style arrangement. I now know what I have and where they are which makes pulling project parts many times easier.
I used my lawn tractor as a test of using the thread gauges on equipment mounted parts. As stated in other reviews using the gauges without cutting them off their wire varies in difficulty from usable to impossible. Ease of use depended on the part's location in the equipment. Although I'm willing to cut the wire if I need to doing so will make the set harder to keep together.
A partial solution would be to have them strung on a longer wire which would allow additional isolation of the gauge used from the other gauges which shouldn't add much to the cost of a set of thread gauges.
But a better solution would be the ability to easily remove/replace the gauges from the wire. I'd certainly be willing to pay more for a set of thread gauges with this feature.
