These hinges feature an innovative torsion mechanism that is tested to 25,000 cycles to assure a long working life.
How many hinges do you need?
Use our Torsion Calculator or the formula below to help determine your optimal configuration.

(lid depth (Fig. 1) x lid weight in pounds) ÷ 2 = Inch-lbs. of support

For best results, choose a combination of hinges that provides as close to your lid's required support as possible (eg. if the formula returned 125 you would use two 60 inch-pound hinges). Hinges are available in 30, 40, and 60 inch-pound ratings.
Note: If three or more hinges are required, the support-capacity of the outside hinges must be the same. Also, the hinge configuration should be symmetrical.

Installation instructions

  • Step 1: Attach hinge to lid with 3/4" screws (included). For the lid to be flush with the back of the box, the top of the hinge should be 1- 9/16" from the back edge of the lid. To create an overlay, increase the 1-9/16" dimension by the desired amount of overhang.
Note: Our Lid-Stay Torsion Hinge JIG IT® (23625) lets you to attach the hinge to the lid in seconds, and requires no measuring. Works great for both flush and overlay applications. Fig. 2.
  • Step 2: With all hinges attached to the lid, position the lid on the back of the box. Complete the installation using 1" and 3/4" screws as shown in the illustration. Fig. 3.

Used two 60# hinges for my daughters blanket chest. They are the best thing going to keep the look of the chest simple and they are outstanding quality. Do order the jig for installation, I did not and it made an easy installation into a long drawn out affair. These will be the only hinges I will use in the future. Great Product !!!!

These hinges are high quality and work just as described. I used 2 60-inch lb hinges on this 18" x 36" lid made from 6/4 Cherry, and they worked great. They are designed to be used on a 3/4" back, but with a little mortising, they can be used with thicker stock.

I refinished an old cedar chest of my grandmothers for my daughter to be used as a toy chest and I purchased three of these hinges. More than a year later, they still work perfectly and no busted fingers!!! VERY pleased with them.

Torsion hinges worked out great, I had to route out an area for them to work, since  they are made for a 3/4"  thickness. The online calculator worked out to 95 lbs but I was able to use 2-60 lb hinges with no problem.

Just installed these so don't know how they are long term, but very favorably impressed so far. They will hold the lid open in ANY position. It allows opening way passed 90 degrees though, so I used a chain to keep it from opening too far, but that may be a advantage in some applications.

My woodworking partner and I have built 2 toy boxes and 3 cedar chests using these hinges and have 3 more blanket chests in the works, all for family. These hinges are perfect as they keep the lid safely elevated for our 2 & 4 year old grandsons. Great project and easy install with the template/jig.

These hinges are the cat's meeow! I used four 60 inch-pound hinges to mount the lid on the chest. The lid weighs 26 pounds. The hinges preformed as advertised. I did mortise the hinges in the lid to achieve a flush fit to the chest. Great hinges.

This is the second time I have used these, and the calculator worked again, terrific!!

The main bonus is that the lid requires no stays to keep it open. That provides clean access to the chest.

Hope chest hinges installed on a heavy lid!

I used the sixty lbs hinges for the lid. I mortised the hinge into the back so that the lid would sit tightly down on to the chest top. This is very easy to do but requires a little more time. These hinges work great. They are the best hinge I have found for chests. Not having a lid stay in the way on the inside of the chest is great. Also you never have to worry about kids crawling into the chest and having the lid fall onto them. Thanks Rockler for the great service

I built my grandson a toy box from plans in WOOD magazine, and was in a fret on choosing hinges. I opted to go with the torsion hinges suggested in the article. I am so glad I did. These hinges are everything they said they were. With these two 40 lb. hinges installed I'm not worried about my 2 year old grandson helping himself to his toys, talk about "peace of mind". I will in the very near future, or my next project, seek out the folks at Rockler for all of my project needs!

I used 3 hinges two 60 lb and one 30 lb on a Honduran Mahogany hope chest. The hinges work as advertised holding the lid open at any angle. There is no danger in the lid falling. A couple of points to be aware of: First, the hinges are quite massive and stick out quite a bit in the back, which is fine if your piece is designed for this look. I designed the lid to overhang and cover the hinge from top view. I like the look. Second, as you can imagine with the lid left open at 45 degree angle there is quite a bit of pressure at the hinges. You will want to design so that your project is strong at the hinge points. Third, the hinges fit 3/4 inch wood. If your wood is a little thicker, as most is when it comes from the mill, you will need to do a little sanding or routering at the hinge point to get it down to 3/4. Keeping these points in mind I like these hinges and would use them again for this type of hinge need.

I ordered two sets of 60 inch-pound Led Stay Torsion Hinges to be used on two toy boxes being built for my grandchildren. I received the order in a very short time and have installed the hinges. I found them to do what they were said to do and keep the led open to any point wished. I am very satisfied with the outcome of the product and will be using the hinges again. They are extremely safe for the children to play around and will keep a lot of fingers safe. It also keeps me from any concerns about a child getting inside and not being able to get out on their own.

I just received and installed these hinges today. They work awesome on a toy chest lid. I wish I would have purchased these along time ago instead of buying a ton of cheap hinges that ended up breaking anyway. I would have saved time and money by purchasing these in the first place.

I used the 60 lb. hinges on a quality blanket chest because I didn't want the distraction of the separate hinge supports. These worked perfect and enhanced the look of the red oak chest. Be warned that these are very strong hinges, so if you close them before mounting them, you can't open them with your bare hands. I was able to open them with pliers while protecting the surfaces with little pieces of wood.

I have a customer that wanted to modify a cherry coffee table to use as a display case for EMS lapel pins. I made a new framed top with tempered 1/4" glass (heavy) and used the torsion hinges to support the weight and eliminate the need for a stay, allowing a cleaner look and more display area. They were very pleased. I'd use them again without hesitation for the right project.

Built a toy chest/blanket chest for grandaughter out of QSRO. All raised panels and 3/4" material. My biggest concern was the weight of the subsequent lid.
After reading reviews of these hinges, I decided to order. Using the online calculator, it revealed that I would need 2 60 lb hinges. Installation was very straight forward. I purchased the jig as well, but after using it, I felt that I could have installed without it very easily.
The lid does hold any position and are quite heavy duty. I was a little dissapointed with the color of the hinge. I ordered antique bronze, but they are actually almost black.
All in all an excellent hinge for this application and Rockler as always are a treat to deal with.

Excellent product. Easy to install and allows for unlimited overhang options on back of case. Works like advertised. May want to mortise in if desiring no gap between lid and case. Be careful to order the correct weight in order to obtain appropriate support of lid when open....not to much....not to light. Using the jig for hinge positioning was nice.

I used them as advertised, on a blanket chest. Using the calculator, I was sure that what I received were far too strong, but I noted the warning by another reviewer, not to close them before installing - good idea!!

This is a great product. Installation was a breeze and the quality seems to be top notch. The lid on the hope chest in installed these on stays open at almost any angle from barely open to over 90 degrees. However I do believe, like some others on their reviews that they are a little overpriced.

The hinges are very good. I used them on a blanket chest I made. I would have given them 5 stars except the Torsion calculator said I needed two 60 pound hinges. After installing them, the lid doesn't stay open on it's own at all positions. When about a foot from closed, the lid won't stay open. Obviously, I needed a third hinge. I think some adjusting to the calculator needs to be done to insure you buy enough hinges to support your piece. Otherwise, they are very good hinges.

The 60 lb hinge set works great but I broke the fist screw that I installed. After that I turned down the torque and two more broke just tring to snug them down. Love the hinge, hate the screws. I had to disassemble the hinges. Extract the broken screws and go buy some good quality wood screw. So a lesson learned. Don't try to use the included screws with hickory.

Editor's note: The screws included with these hinges have been tested and meet all strength requirements. When installing these hinges (as with any hardware) it is very important to A) drill a proper size pilot hole, B) use a screw lube such as beeswax, and C) not to over torque. In a the majority of cases where a screw breaks we find that one or more of these step have been overlooked. When installing screws in hardwoods, such as hickory, oak or maple, many woodworkers will add another step of first using an ordinary steel screw of the same size to 'pre-test' and 'pre-thread' the pilot holes they've drilled. Thus doing so, they save the screws included with whatever hardware they are installing for the final installation.
Our customer service team at 800-376-7856 is available to assist if replacement screws are needed.

I've used these hinges on 6 projects. I like the ease of use and the style, however if used as designed, you will have a rather large space between the lid and the base. I tried to mortise the hinges, where the hinge sets atop the base in an effort to eliminate the gap. Due to the design of the hinge, I noted as I began to closed the cover, the top half of the hinge was starting to crush the outside edge of bottom half of the project.

The screws break very easily, even with a low torque setting on the drill. I now install all the screws using a screw driver verses a cordless drill and haven't had any problems.

Great hinges! I used them on the 9th toy chest that I have built for my grand nieces and nephews, and this is a big improvement over a hinge for the lid and a separate safety support. I use 5/4 stock for the rails, so I did have to mortise the rail to get the 3/4" thickness for the hinge.

The Lid-Stay Torsion Hinges sound like a great idea and the sales clerk at Rockler assured me they were the ultimate solution for my Grandson's toy chest. But I can tell you nothing in this life is ever as simple as all that. The big problem is that the very thickness of the hinge body necessitates the use of a chisel to bring the lid down to a flush position. Furthermore the 2 30 pound hinges I bought would NOT hold the lid from dropping from a 30 degree position even though the lid was way less than 30# Needless to say it took me way longer than a few seconds or even a few minutes to install!

Editor's note: Mortising of these hinges in not required. Mortising of hinges to bring bottom of lid tight to top of box has the potential for unnecessary binding.
