The only thing lacking on my Jet Pro band saw was a light. I ordered one of these snake lights and it looks like it was original equipment. I found that by doing a partial twist and then positioning the beam it holds its position very well, and illuminates the work very well.

I find the arm of the lamp to be plenty stiff. If you put it in a certain position, it isn't going to move. The toggle switch seems nice and solid. The desk mount bracket is nice and beefy. Seems to be well build in every respect. I haven't tried the magnetic base yet.

Found the light to be all that I expected. Magnetic base is fine have not usd clamp base yet. Very helpful in use on my lathe.

You can safely ignore the reviewers who didn't like the magnetic base (or thought it was burdensome to have to turn four screws to change bases!). This is the best shop light I have found, and a bargain at the price. The magnetic base is very strong. The clamp base is heavy metal. The gooseneck stays where you put it. The switch is even the right kind--it toggles rather than rotating (those always wear out or break). I bought two and am about to buy two more.

The Snake Arm Shop Light is a very useful tool. In my case, it has been quite helpful in setting accurate bit settings on the router table and monitoring closely my work on the lathe. It is well designed and constructed from good materials. I expect to get many years of use from it.
The only reason I did not give the shop light a rating of "5" is the design of the base mount. Two bases are provided: a base with an integral magnet for mounting the light to a metallic table top or cabinet side and a nonmagnetic base that can be clamped to an edge. To change from one base to the other requires removing four screws, taking one base off, attaching the other base, and then reinstalling the screws. I wish there was a quicker way to shift from one base to the other since the best method of mounting often varies from one task to another.

I was reluctant to purchase this product due to a previous review questioning the holding capacity of the magnet. I have just installed my light and find the holding capacity to be very good and much better than the more expensive Moffitt light which I also use with a lathe as I do this one. Perhaps the magnet has been made stronger. The only suggestion I could make which might improve the product is to have a bulb shield, but the bottom line for me is that it is a great buy compared to other similar products.

I find the mag base to very good. It's actually a bit of work to remove it. I suspect they beefed up the magnet. I do agree that the flex arm is pretty much worthless however. It flops all over the place and won't stay put. I do have it on my bandsaw so the head is constantly fighting gravity so that may be more than I should ask of it.

The real failure on this light is that the gooseneck is not strong enough to hold up the light head. I am trying to use it on my bandsaw. I have to go through all kind of contortions to be able to use it. Quite disappointing.

As stated in a couple other reviews: The weight of the head, the lamp, was too heavy for the goose neck. I attempted to mount it on the side of my band saw using the magnet but the head just kept drooping down, out of position. I like the idea of the 24" goose neck. Maybe if they offered this with the LED Work Light which I personally think has too short of a goose neck, about 16" long it would be a nice set.

I finally got the box open and assembled the lamp. The magnet is VERY strong on the unit I received. It'll be fine for gripping my lathe, grinders and drill press, for sure. The flexible neck is apparently one of the "old design" because when the magnetic base is holding on to a vertical or near-vertical surface, the head of the lamp slumps over if the goose-neck isn't very close to vertical. The clamp mount looks fine but I don't have anything in my shop that it would be suitable for.
Finally, with no protection for the bulb, a breakaway piece of wood could shatter an incandescent lamp or worse, for those concerned about it, release mercury vapor if you installed a CFL lamp.
Fortunately, I've got a better [almost best] solution, though it's pricier: Get an LED spotlight that can screw into the standard light bulb socket. Mine puts out WAY sufficient light with a great pattern of illumination, yet draws just a few watts of power, so the lamp housing will never get hot to the touch.

Forget it! The flexible arm has very little rigidity and can't hold up the weight of the lamp. Terrible product and a waste of money.

While I found the magnet strong enough, I found the gooseneck totally inadequate. There is no way you can stick this on the side of a drill press and expect it to stay pointed where you want.

The light works well and is a good value. However, the neck is not stiff enough to hold the lighting head in position. It requires very creative thinking to come up with ways to attach the light's base to the work surface/tool and have the light shine where it is needed.

Tried it on the side of my bandsaw. The lamp head is too heavy for the magnet to hold the lamp up. Magnet slid down the frame of saw. Head of light too heavy for the neck to hold the light head where I positioned it. Very dissatisfied with product. Ordered two. Sent both back.

I unfortunately need to confirm all the bad reviews mentioning flex arm weakness. The product has not been improved as of late December 2011. The rest of the lamp is really well made and solid, with a strong magnet, but when I attach it to my scroll saw I find that the small vibration of the tool makes the light droop, so that I end up supporting the lamp head with my arm or elbow halfway through a 5-inch cut. No way of twisting or bending could resolve this in my case. I will keep it as a desk lamp rather than returning the heavy product, but will keep looking for a light with magnetic base to attach to my various power tools. Without vibration the flex arm stays in place, but not by a wide margin.

It is a fairly good product except the magnet isn't quite strong enough. It slips if you bend the snake arm very much. The snake arm is also longer than I expected (a little bulky). It works great for how cheap it is...if you can set it up so the lamp part is centered over the base part.
