Included components are a square #1/square #2 bit, a slotted/Phillips bit, brass ferrule, knurled insert, and a reversible shaft that accepts 1/4'' bits. One reason I made it was because it does come with square bits. My dad uses square screws at his cabinet shop, so the square bit come in handy sometimes. I thought that this product was very easy to assemble and to make. I am very pleased with the resuults I have turned.

I've make four and will probably do a few more since they make great gifts. I do wish that the ferrule were a bit smaller-it looks outsized unless a really large handle is turned. Also be careful to drill the required hole deep enough. It needs another 1/4" or so more than the instructions say.

3) Submitted by Bill Edwards, from Columbus, GA on 12/22/2010 Customer Rating: Bought six to begin with as stocking stuffers. Getting ready to buy about a dozen more. Getting the screwdrivers exactly right is deceptively simply. It is virtually impossible without a drill press floor model preferably or a Jacobs chuck for your lathe. Brad point drill bits work better than spade bits. Exotic woods make great handles but remember some can be cause allergic reactions. Wish there was a better assortment of Phillips and Flat screwdriver bit sizes instead of some of the types of bits that were included but are rarely used. 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" X 6" wood blanks work fine. Directions call for 2" X 2" X 6". It really dresses up the finished product to buff the brass with jeweler's rouge. Cheers

The phillips bit fits into the shaft with great difficulty, it has to be in just the correct position. The supplier has changed the design which is different that pictured.

It allows one to "re-invent the shape of a screwdriver handle and I thought that was fun. I would give 4 points but I was disappointed some with the bit choices that come with the kit. 1- phillips, 1- regular, and 2- square drives. Since this item tends to be given away as gifts a lot that's what I did, the 2 square drives would be often useless to most people.

Cons: Instructions are not available on line, and are printed on the underside of the stapled cardboard hanger of the bag the kit comes in: this makes it difficult to find what tools you need in order to complete the project.The instructions are one long blurb! the steps aren't itemized. The instructions recommendation to use a jam chuck although they didn't call it that, which leads me to believe that the directions were not written by a competent turner led to me turning an eccentric handle twice before I gave up on that method.The instructions did not list the specific interior diameter of the brass ferrule.The screwdriver tips start to rust very quickly! Stainless tips would have been better. The kit provides two, two sided screwdriver tips! one has square bits on both ends. Who uses square bits? Rockler should be able to come up with better tips than completely useless square ones! Responses to prior posts: 1.5"x1.5"x6" blanks do work well as Bill Edwards said. Also polishing up the brass ferrule with Jeweler's rouge really puts the icing on the cake. I have a small bench top drill press and was able to drill the blank in stages: starting on the foot of the press, then shimming the blank up on the foot, then drilling from the press's table. Doing this with limited tool capacities IS possible, if you use your imagination! I think all of the hardware is sized well except for the shaft which is a bit short IMO. Tools required: Drill press, 5/8" spade tip drill bit, lathe, turning chuck, live center with a cone larger in diameter than 5/8", and assorted turning tools spindle gouges worked best for me on this project. Not required but helpful tools: Full size drill press, mallet for driving in knurled insert, felt polishing wheel, Tripoli/rouge, Adhesive CA, epoxy, whatever you prefer, sandpaper I only went up to 600 since it is going to get banged around being a tool and all, using a higher grit would be pointless, your preferred finish. Tips: Pay as little attention to the instructions as possible, they are nearly useless. Drill the blank first. Mount your blank between a chuck and live center live center on the "tip end"/ drilled hole end of the handle. Turn your tenon and attach the brass ferrule. I used CA to adhere the ferrule to the blank make sure the set time of the CA is at least 1 minute. This is more important for the knurled insert than it is for the brass ferrule. Turn your desired profile on the handle and part off unless you want to apply a finish first, in which case, apply the finish and then part off. Drive in the knurled insert I used CA to adhere the insert as well and the CA set before I was able to drive the insert all of the way in, but it still looks fine. Apply your desired finish. I used Rockler's Nordic Oil which did not produce the result that I wanted. It did not build at all and did not bring out the grain of the Kingwood blank I also got from Rockler. I applied 7 coats with 12-18 hours between each coat, sanding with 600 grit prior to each coat, as well as wet sanding each coat in. When the finish is good to go, and you have sufficiently ruined the polish on the ferrule from all of your sanding, mask any wood near the ferrule and go to town with your choice of Tripoli/rouge. Summation: All in all you can turn this ugly duckling into a jewel if you disregard the directions and use your imagination to fix the issues.I wouldn't recommend this kit to a beginner, or someone who isn't a good problem solver.
