In addition to this kit you will need the following:
Wood: The minimum blank size we recommend is 1-1/2'' x 1-1/2'' x 6'', in a strong
hardwood such as maple, cherry, walnut, oak, or yellow birch. Of the
imported hardwoods bubinga, purpleheart, gongola alves and cocobolo make
wonderful handles.
Turning tools: Spindle roughing gouge, spindle/detail gouge,
parting tool and optional skew chisel. A pair of outside calipers with rounded
edges on the measuring points is helpful in fitting the ferrule.
Drill bit: 3/8'' brad point or regular twist bit.
Chucks: Depending on how you will hold and drill the
piece, you may need a scroll-type chuck for your headstock and a
Jacobs-style chuck for your tailstock.
Glue and finish: The tang can be glued into the handle
with epoxy or a thick type of CA (''super glue''). The finish could be with a
drying type of oil such as pure tung oil or boiled linseed oil. An oil and
varnish blend such as Rockler's Nordic Oil also looks great. For a film type of
finish (for extra protection against moisture and a higher sheen finish) try a
wiping type polyurethane or a gel varnish.

The ice cream scoop is fun and easy to make, and the variety of designs is your imaginaton. The shank should have some nodes or a rougher surface to give it a better gluing/gripping surface. I have made several and used them as gifts as well as selling them at craft shows.

Metal scoop and ferral are of excellent quality. Instructions are good as well. I used a very dark cocobolo for the handle, which provides a wonderful contrast to the silver finish. Being a pen turner, I used Myland's as the final finish, and it looks outstanding. I am going to buy several more-I believe they will sell easily.

This kit is exceptionally easy to build. I had 4 or 5 store bought ice cream scoops that broke, when I saw this stainless steel kit I got it. Turned the handle in less than an hour and was using it. It's very functional and a great deal, plus fun to build!

Absolutely perfect for either gifts or as inexpensive items to sell at craft fairs or on-line venues. It's trivial to turn the tenon for the ferrule and drill the hole for the scoop's shaft. Turning handles from spindles is one of the simplest woodturning projects and even a modestly talented turner can create one or a dozen with no great effort!
