This futon
plan lets you choose from three different arm styles! Build either Mission-style
arm rests or a rounded more contemporary style.
Futon bed hardware sold separately.
This
plan uses roller hardware which is inexpensive, durable and easy to use.
The plan includes a full-size pattern for creating a jig which makes the
routing easy (routing is required to install the roller hardware).
The roller kit and fastener kit together include all the parts needed
to assemble plan #37761. The Roller Kit (#38437) is available separately
for use on your own design.

I made this futon for my oldest son for Christmas. The pattern was easy to follow and the hardware works great. The 1" and 1+" material of course costs more and is harder to find, but it is neccesary for this type of project. I may make another one in the future.

I liked this project because it forced me to use just about every tool in my shop. Milling requires a fairly high degree of precision, but the end product looks good.

I found the futon plans easy to follow, yet challenging produce. I built a futon for my daughter and I am in the process of building another with my son for his use. The most challenging thing was to make the template for the roller dados. My daughter is very pleased with the end product. Finding the 1" stock was difficult I glued up 1/4 and 3/4 material to get to the 1" stock.

I did not know when I ordered the plan that it would require 1 inch (actual) oak. Could not find in this area and doubt I could afford it if I could. So I used 2 inch (nominal) pine, and adjusted the plans accordingly. I also used mortise and tenden rather than dowls.
After finishing the Futon I think that it sets to close to the floor, and the seat to back angle could be improved upon. Instead of being somewhat like a backward L it is more like a V tilted to the side, and a little hard to get up from. But it looks good and sure was more affordable than the futons we have seen in furniture stores.
The roller kit works great!
All in all, it was a worthy, challenging project.
"I became disabled three years ago and had the hardest of times to find what I needed for my shop. But not now. You've got everything I can think of. Thank you! No more B.S. from the H.D. store here!" -
