Customer Rating:
Not bad for plane irons, but barely useable for chisels with blunt sides, since the chisel can not seat well within the beveled sides of the clamps. I also found the the small width of the wheel made it a little difficult to keep the jig from tilting to one side or the other during sharpening. As a work around for my chisels, I place the bottom face directly against the lateral bars of the tool and use a pair of pliers to tighten the bolt.

If I could rate separately for plane irons vs. chisels, I would give a 4 or maybe even 5 for planes and a 1 for chisels. For planes it really works well. With my chisels, I am able to do better freehand.

As an average weekend woodworker. I found the Honing Guide a little difficult to set up each chisel in order to make it level. The more I have used it the easier it is to work it. Great tool to have when one can't afford the machine sharpeners.

A 3 star is in the middle of poor and excellent. This is excellent for plane irons but poor for chisels. There is a lot of fussing and trial and error to get the chisel perfectly level and aligned in the slots. If a chisel hone is what you are looking for this is not it.

I bought this to sharpen my wood chisels and it does a supurb job. In the process, I used it to rejuvinate an old block plane of my father's. It cuts as well as the new block plane I have.

Bouhgt this tool to tune up an old plane iron, and a new set of chisels. This simplicity of this tool is amazing. There are a lot of 'sytems' out there. I see no reason for anything else, for plane irons and chisels. I even ordered one for my brother-in-law a home workshop woodworker like myself.

Customer Rating:
For a plane iron it does a good job, but for normal length chisels it has two problems. First, the chisel can twist in the holder giving a skewed sharpening to the cutting edge. Second, a normal length chisel will be held properly as the 25 degree length requires a longer chisel body (length from cutting edge to the point where it narrows down).

This indispensable accessory hit the Trifecta: Dirt cheap, dumb simple, and dead accurate.
I found this guide to be easy to use right out of the box, with a high value-to-cost ratio, durable construction and an intuitive design that made the purpose and operation easy to understand. A nickel worked fine to tighten the clamp on either a plane iron or a chisel.
On my plane iron edges, I prefer a slight crown. Using this tool in a slight arcing motion made it easy to hone my irons perfectly.

This product performed exactly as expected and I found it to be well worth the price for keeping a sharpened set of tools. There are two points which you may find helpful. The first was a hint suggested on The Woodworkers TV program wherby you scrape the back side of the tool to be sharpened i.e. chisel or plane scraper in order to eliminate any roughness. The second is to press down on the front edge of the tool, elevate it onto the edge to be sharpened, and then slide and tighten the honing guide into place. This will afford you a perfect angle for sharpening the tool.

Does exactly what it's supposed to, using it with a simple hardware store oil stone and got my chisels sharper than i ever had freehand, you do have to tighten it down pretty well so it doesn't move out of place, but i imagine you can't get sharper for cheaper.

The Honing Guide is Great! I have been Sharpening my Chisles and Plane Blade by hand for years and had "Limited" success. I clamped on the honing guide and in the space of about 20 minutes I achieved a razor sharp edge I could never achieve by hand. This tool is worth its weight in gold.

I already owned a Work Sharp machine. That machine does a good job, but I have some large tools that exceed the size limits. The Honing Guide very neatly allows me to sharpen all my larger edged tools. Bought two, one for me and one for my son.

I have tried other devices that cost much more that haven't worked half as well as this honing guide. What is better yet is I made the purchase during free shipping days which added even an extra bonus. Oh and by the way it was half the price of a local competitor!

Arrived in good shape - the wheel operated very smoothly and it clamped tightly. As the other reviewers said, it works great for wide/plane blades. Although it looks off for chisels, it worked really well on mine (Irwin Marples). You do have to be careful to hold it correctly while sharpening, but it's not very hard to do that. overall, this is the best $10 I've spent on sharpening so far. A huge improvement over the jig I built myself.

I'm not much of a hand at sharpening but on the first chisel I got very good (for me) results. It's not automatic and takes a bit of setup and getting used to but for the price it's a dandy.

For the price this is a great value.
The plane iron bed is easy to setup and work with, but the chisel groove is far less forgiving and difficult to get set. Once set though you can tighten the screw and get a good, sharp square face on the chisel and ultimately it's worth the extra time fighting with the chisel groove because it saves so much time when you're sharpening/honing by keeping the blade at a constant angle to allow you to move it quickly from grit to grit.
Bottom line, if you're new or not very good at sharpening and on a budget you cannot beat this for the price.

This honing guide works great for planer blades as it has a flat bed to rest the blade on while setting up the proper honing angle. Chisels are a different matter. Without the flat bed to rest the chisel on, and the side groove that doesn't match any of my chisels, it takes a bit of finess to hold the chisel at the proper angle while tightening down the screw. However, for the price, you can't beat it and it becomes easier to use each time.

This was the first sharpening product like this I've purchased. It has worked well as advertised (using sandpaper on glass), seems pretty well made, & the price was right. I would recommend this product for anyone not desiring to dump a lot of cash or requiring absolute perfection - just a good product for a good price.

This is a good value, it takes a little time to get used to and you have to tighten the chisel in place with a large screwdriver or a coin. But for price you can't beat this deal!

This has a good bang for the buck value. My biggest pet peeve is how difficult it is to mount a chisel. The clamp just isn't engineered properly to make it easy, but if you use the screw it works as directed. I did sharpen all my chisels to where they should be at. If you want no frustration pay more but if you can put up with some clunkiness, it works great.

I have wanted to own one of these for a long time, and just sprung for one. One suggestion I'd make is that the "extensions" for a certain correct angle be inscribed on the tool, not just on the card that will get dirty, worn, and eventually tossed.

I find this honing gauge is not of good quality, it does not hold chisels well at all and one side is molded so curved that it will not keep the chisels stable in the holder, I am sorry that I got this gauge and would not recommend it to anyone. I have not tried it with plane irons and not sure that I will given my results with the chisels. It is on my "I wish I had not made this purchase shelf".

Customer Rating:
The guide is very good at holding plane irons, and can be persuaded to hold chisels with parallel edges. If the chisel has taper in the width of the back from handle to point, this guide will not hold the chisel to give you a square tip, and will not hold it steady if you want a tip with a random angle. It also will also not hold very thick chisels well. Don't buy for chisels. It's great for your irons.

Like other reviews have mentioned, needed to file the guide to get chisel to fit securely. Interesting note-got with the plate glass sharpening system.
I already had a honing guide-20 years old. for comparison: the older guide has a larger thumb screw, can accommodate wider blades and is made of a softer and less heavy metal was easier to file down to fit a chisel.... both work better for me than sharpening by hand.

I bought this guide and found that the grooves that supposed to hold the chisel are not wide enough for the chisel set I have. I could not get it to hold the chisel flat as it would be tilted to one side or the other. It was therefore a waste of my money.

Customer Rating:
I bought this to maintain sharp and square edges on my good-quality wood chisels, as well as to touch up plane blades. The slots on the guide are poorly designed, and none of my chisels would fit in correctly. Chisels are not only beveled on the edges, but they also taper down from the handle to the cutting edge. Because the blade gets thicker closer to the handle, the chisels would not fit correctly in the beveled-only slots, and would be canted to one side or the other. This made it impossible to get an even, square edge on the wood chisels. I would NOT recommend this honing guide to anyone wanting to use it for wood chisels, if they want to keep them square and straight across the ends. On the other hand, it works fairly well for plane blades, although the adjustment is pretty fussy and hard to get exactly correct.

Though it will do the job, it is tough to use well. Due to the small wheel, it tends to round the corners of the chisel point, especially on smaller chisels. The wheel also had weld joints that bumped along as you roll back and forth on stone or sand paper (I mount on a granite tile), which was quite annoying, but didn't seem to cause any adverse effects. I'm returning mine and getting one with a broader wheel.
