This curly soft maple is highly figured with tiger-striped rays running perpendicular to the grain pattern. Along with the wood's light color, this striping lends a shimmering quality to the lumber. Even unfinished, the wood has a very pleasing interaction with light. It is no surprise, then, that curly maple has become a woodworker's favorite for accents, specialty furniture, musical instruments, and more.

To make the figure in this curly maple really ''pop'', we recommend using an oil product (tung, linseed, etc.), as opposed to a stain. If a lacquer or urethane finish is necessary, adding a coat or two of clear wax-free shellac before the final finishing will ensure that the figure stands out.

Received 2 5 X 48 pieces as ordered.1 is border line curly maple with some very poor grain. 2nd piece is abso!utely plain with no figuring at all. Both pieces look like they came out of the plain maple bin, not curly maple by any stretch.

I ordered the 1/2x5x48 piece and I have to say, it’s very disappointing. The grain is very flat with virtually no figure at all. Couple that with the terrible resaw marks on both sides of the wood and it makes this purchase a bust. By the time I mill out the imperfections I'll be lucky if I have 3/8" thickness of a very ordinary piece of soft maple. I’m just glad I only bought one piece instead of ordering several pieces as I intended. I have been pleased with many things I’ve purchased from Rockler, but this is certainly not one of them.

Other woods are walnut & wenge. All were very good to work with just slow and careful
